Reuel Gerecht: Sharia really isn’t all that bad

This is a couple of weeks old, but Jihad Watch reader Benedict just brought it to my attention today, and I thought in light of the ongoing recent attempts to whitewash Sharia, it was worth setting the record straight. Gerecht never answered my response to his straw-man attack on Pamela Geller, so I doubt he will respond to this — which is unfortunate only because his befuddled New Republic readers will continue blithely on with the misconceptions he has given them.

Gerecht here criticizes those who allegedly “blur the line between militant Muslims and the everyday faithful,” and asserts that Sharia should not be subjected to a “blanket demonization,” because, he says, just look at fine men like the Ayatollahs Sistani and Montazeri, both Sharia scholars and adherents, and neither terrorists.

All right. Let’s look at them. The Ayatollah Sistani’s website contains this helpful classification, placing unbelievers (kafir) on par with blood, urine, feces, etc.:

The following ten things are essentially najis [unclean]:1. Urine
2. Faeces
3. Semen
4. Dead body
5. Blood
6. Dog
7. Pig
8. Kafir [unbeliever — i.e., non-Muslims]
9. Alcoholic liquors
10. The sweat of an animal who persistently eats najasat [unclean things].

Is this Sharia? Yes, for Shi’ites in particular, who base the idea that unbelievers are unclean on Qur’an 9:28. Is this idea “militant” or “terrorist”? No, but it is supremacist, and unbelievers who believe in equality of rights for all are not wrong to be suspicious of the spread of such ideas Westward. And Montazeri held the same views, such that an Iranian Christian complained that his views of non-Muslims were “rubbing salt into our wounds.”

I’m going to stand against such things, and for human rights.

Angle: Racking up Millions as She Spreads Islamophobia

Once again, the rhetoric of Sharia taking over America has been exploited this time by Nevada Tea Party favorite Sharron Angle.

In her recent interview with the Mesquite Local News, the Republican candidate said: “Dearborn, Michigan, and Frankford, Texas are on American soil, and under Constitutional law, not Sharia law. And I don’t know how that happened in the United States. It seems to me there is something fundamentally wrong with allowing a foreign system of law to even take hold in any municipality or government situation in our United States.”

“The Jews, the Jews…!”

Obviously Angle has never visited Borough Park, Brooklyn where thousands of Hasidic Jews live their lives according to the Talmudic Law, which also has its roots in the “foreign” Middle East. A biker lane in Williamsburg was removed, against the wishes of community members, in order not to offend the religious beliefs of conservative Hasidic residents who didn’t want to see women in skimpy clothing riding by everyday. Likewise, Angle’s flawed logic could be used against Catholics, who follow Roman Catholic Law dictated by a “foreign” Pope who lives in Rome. The US allows abortion and divorce, which are contrary to Catholic “Sharia” (law). Many Catholics want to change US law to make it conform more to their own Sharia laws, particularly concerning abortion. Does this make Catholics “anti-American?” According to Angle’s logic it would.

Outwardly, anyway: Yusuf al-Qaradawi expounds the doctrine of taysir, which allows Muslims to practice a more “relaxed” version of Islam — so long as their hearts cling to the more “uptight” version.

A recent episode of the popular Arabic showal-Sharia wa al-Haya (Law and Life), which airs weekly on Al Jazeera and features renowned Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, addressed the important yet little known Muslim concept of taysir (pronounced “tey-seer”).

Qaradawi, who is touted by the likes of John Esposito and CAIR as a “moderate” — even as he legitimizes suicide attacks against Israel (including by women) and death for apostates — explained that, according to fiqh al-taysir (the “jurisprudence of ease”), Islam (like Catholicism) offers Muslims dispensations, whenever needed: “For Allah desires ease for you, not hardship” (Koran 2:185; see also 5:6, 4:26-28, 2:286). For instance, Muslims traveling during the month of Ramadan or engaged in jihad need not observe the obligatory fast. Raymond Ibrahim from Pajamas Media explains……

Taqiyya is a religious obligation to protect Islam from scrutiny. Taqiyya involves dissimulation, lying, deceiving, vexing and confounding with the intention of deflecting attention, foiling or pre-emptive blocking. It is currently employed in fending off and neutralising any criticism of Islam or Muslims.

[…]Ayloush explained that al-Qaida is so unwanted in Muslim countries the terrorist organization must hide. “Eight out of 10 victims (of al-Qaida) are Muslim,” he said. “Every political leader has spoken out against (them).”

It was just over a year ago when the small Borough of Rockaway, New Jersey was the scene of a much heated and polarized debate whether to allow an Islamic center occupy a vacant office building. Their spewing of insidiously filled behavior is a constant reminder that some Americans are willing to forsake the constitutional right of fellow citizens to practice their chosen faith in a place and inthe manner of their choosing.

Not quite. The rights Muslims demand would do away with our constitutional rights. Besides, its us who allow  you to choose, Islam doesn’t.

Samau’ al al-Maghribi converted to Islam from Judaism in 1163 C.E., and shortly afterward wrote an anti-Jewish polemic entitled Silencing the Jews. Al-Maghribi’s “Silencing” — ostensibly a “philosophical” tract — employs Islamic Biblical criticism to characterize the Jews as ignorant, unreasonable, and hypocritical, complemented by theirKoranic depiction as accursed prophet-killers who transgress Allah’s will, corrupt his message, and harbor the most intense hatred for the Muslims. Moshe Perlmann (d. 2001) translated al-Maghribi’s tract into English and was the preeminent scholar of Islam’s medieval polemic against the Jews. In his introduction to Silencing, Perlmann (in 1964) observed that this literature was redolent with motifs from the Muslim creed’s foundational texts:

The Koran, of course became a mine of anti-Jewish passages. The hadith did not lag behind. Popular preachers used and embellished such material.

In an earlier study (published 1948) of 11th century Muslim Spain — idealized, falsely, as the paragon of Islam’s ecumenism — Perlmann had described how such polemical tracts and sermons incited the mass violence which destroyed the Jewish community of Granada during the catastrophic 1066 pogrom. Its death toll of some 3000 to 4000 Jews exceeded the number of Jews reportedly killed by the Crusaders during their pillage of the Rhineland, some thirty years later, at the outset of the First Crusade.

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s top religious authority yesterday denounced terror attacks as un-Islamic and condemned the killing of civilians, saying such attacks have nothing to do with the Muslim religion.

Islam doesn’t recognize the concept of “civilians…”

“Terrorism is criminal and spills the blood of innocents,” said Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh, the kingdom’s senior most cleric. “It attacks security, spreads terror among the people and creates problems for society … Such acts are forbidden by Islamic law,” he said in a statement reported on the official SPA news agency. “It is necessary to fight against the attempts by some to attach terrorism to Islam and Muslims with the goal of distorting the religion and to assail its leadership role in the world,” he added. The statement was for a conference on international cooperation in fighting terrorism and its financing, to open Saturday in Riyadh.

We posted the jihad-terror exhortations from the Koran and the hadith here many times. The mufti calls for religiously mandated lying. For him, the enemy are those who “assail the leadership role of Islam in the world”, in other words those who oppose the spread of Islam. That’s us, people….
