A commander of the Haqqani network told the AFP news agency on Sunday that Bergdahl’s captors had tried to teach the soldier about Islam and provided him with religious books, but he preferred more earthly pursuits.
“He would spend more time playing badminton or helping with cooking,” the rebel chief said. “He loved badminton and always played badminton with his handlers. In fact, he taught many fighters about the game.”

Bergdahl made a point of celebrating the Christian festivals he was accustomed to back home, and invited his captors to participate, the commander said.
“He never missed his religious festivals. He used to tell his handlers they were coming up weeks before Christmas and Easter and celebrated it with them,” he said.

The real toll is in fact higher because the UN figures do not include casualties in the western province of Anbar. Monitoring group Iraq Body Count put the monthly civilian death toll across Iraq higher at 1,027,
