Israel: not every conflict can be resolved

The belief that every conflict can be solved at the negotiating table is not wisdom. It is Western vanity.

The assumption that every conflict can be resolved through negotiation is often treated as a mark of wisdom. But according to British journalist and commentator Melanie Phillips, it reflects a Western arrogance that assumes every society shares the same values, motivations and worldview.

Speaking with John Anderson, she argues that this failure to understand other cultures on their own terms has repeatedly led the West to misjudge the conflicts it faces – with dangerous consequences. The Israeli army and its security agency Shin Bet have claimed they destroyed five Hamas weapon depots in the Gaza Strip overnight.
 
The army said one of the weapon depots was located adjacent to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah and alleged that these sites were used by Hamas to store assault rifles, explosive devices, anti-tank launchers and other military equipment.
 
  • Israel’s military has carried out several more deadly air attacks in Gaza – one killing a person in Deir el-Balah and another killing a person in al-Mawasi area, according to local hospital sources and our colleagues on the ground.

Israel, the world’s heroic scapegoat

An Israeli airstrike on Saturday killed the head of the Hamas-led police force in the northern Gaza Strip, Brigadier General Abdel-Nasser Al-Maqadma, the Hamas-run interior ministry and medics said.

Maqadma, one of at least five Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes on Saturday, was also known as the governor of the northern Gaza Strip.

He was killed in the Sheikh Radwan area north of Gaza City, medics said.

The Israeli military said he was also part of Hamas’s military wing.

Islamic Jihad terrorist Raed Abdul Hamid Khudair was dispatched to the virgins by the Israeli Defense Forces in Gaza.

Inbred Hamas terrorist Umar Adeel Muhammad was permanently neutralized by the Israeli Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has killed dozens of members of the Hamas-led police force, including senior officials, in the past months, accusing many of them of being members of the Hamas armed wing who posed imminent threats to Israel and its forces inside Gaza.

Iran War Updates

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the strike on oil infrastructure in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia as “blatant aggression” and a “flagrant violation” of the country’s sovereignty.

Iran has rejected a proposal from Oman for their joint oversight of the Strait of Hormuz. Instead, Iran made a proposal of its own as both sides continue to pore over the terms of what a final agreement could look like.

Saudi Arabia Says Iran Proxies in Iraq Are Launching Drones at Its Oil Facilities

Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the strikes on oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia as “a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability”.

Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry announced on Monday that it intercepted multiple drones targeting eastern oil facilities that were launched by Iran-controlled Shiite militia forces in Iraq.

The Saudis said they would exercise their “right to respond” at the “appropriate time and place.”

“These terrorist attempts were launched from Iraqi territory and executed by Iranian-affiliated terrorist militias,” the Saudi defense ministry said.

The Saudi statement did not specify exactly how many drones were launched or if any damage was inflicted on the ground when they were intercepted.

JUST IN: Iran Launches Strikes at US Base in “Attempted Surprise Attack” After Trump Halted Strikes Against Iran

Iran launched a missile strike on US forces in the Middle East on Tuesday in what US Central Command described as a “attempted surprise attack.”

All of the missiles were intercepted, CENTCOM says.

This comes after President Trump called off the nearly two-week-long bombing campaign against Iran to continue negotiations on Friday.

“At 5:45 p.m. ET today, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. U.S. forces remain vigilant and at a high state of readiness,” US Central Command announced in a statement.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its “condemnation and strong denunciation” of the Houthi attacks against ships in the Red Sea.

A public rift has emerged between Iran’s government and state television over how to portray the state of war and negotiations with the United States, as mediators try to nudge both countries towards diplomacy.

Former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly said there would be no negotiations with Washington – but privately had given his approval.

“We went to the dear leader, explained the situation, and asked him what to do since he had said the ‘no war, no peace’ conditions are bad for the country,” the president said. “He ordered us to go negotiate. We started the talks based on his order.”

‘Military action alone’ won’t change Iran’s perspective

Iran has “no perfect choices or even good ones”, according to Michael Mulroy, former US deputy assistant secretary of defence for the Middle East and a CIA paramilitary operations officer.

However, if Iran can sell energy, then the US is “not going to be able to isolate them to the point where they change their perspective on a new agreement that’s more conducive to the United States”, he told Al Jazeera.

“So I think we need to build an international coalition to identify how we’re doing this: sanctions, secondary sanctions, freezing assets, the IRGC’s global infrastructure – all these things need to happen”, he said, adding “they probably won’t happen fast enough for the White House’s perspective, but they do need to happen because it’s clear that just military action alone is not changing that perspective”.

“From the US perspective, it needs several things to happen for this not to be considered a strategic failure; they need the Strait of Hormuz to be open, completely open and they need a new nuclear agreement that guarantees Iran doesn’t get a nuclear weapon, and we’re pretty far from that.”

“The Palestinian cause and the injustice inflicted upon Gaza will remain our fundamental and central issue, one that is not subject to compromise,” he said in the statement, adding that the Houthis “will not permit a return to war and aggression against the Gaza Strip”.

Al-Madani concluded: “We reiterate our complete readiness to resume military escalation immediately, should the Israeli enemy attempt to launch another aggression or war against the Gaza Strip.”

On Monday, al-Hayya replaced Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in combat with Israeli forces in October 2024 as Hamas fought a full-scale, two-year war with Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayya, a former deputy chairman of the Palestinian group and one of five members of its leadership council, won an internal ballot in a run-off against former political leader Khaled Meshaal, Hamas said in a statement on Monday.

 US Forces Finish Tenth Consecutive Night of Strikes After Two Ships Hit Near Strait of Hormuz and Iran Fires Additional Strikes at Jordan

Tensions continued to rise in the Middle East on Monday after US forces continued a nine-day bombing streak against Iran on Sunday, following the death of two US service members killed in Iranian attacks. 

US Central Command forces completed a ninth consecutive round of nightly strikes against Iran on Sunday, aimed at “holding Iran accountable at the Commander in Chief’s direction.”

  • Iran continues retaliatory attacks across the region after a 10th consecutive night of US bombing, with the Revolutionary Guard saying it targeted US assets in Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.
  • “Massive fires” broke out on two tankers that “took an unsafe route” in the Strait of Hormuz, says the IRGC.

The president, in a Truth Social post, says “Every time Iran kills an American soldier they will pay for that killing many times over, as the U.S. continues its military campaign in the Middle East.”

  • Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels announce a maritime embargo of their foe Saudi Arabia after the two sides traded fire last week for the first time in years.
  • A vessel is on fire in the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by a projectile forcing the crew to abandon ship. They were later rescued by a tugboat.
  • Hamas says Khalil al-Hayya has been chosen as head of its political bureau succeeding Yahya Sinwar who was killed by Israel in Gaza in 2024.
  • A US service member has died in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, according to CENTCOM.

Houthis see Saudi maritime embargo as an ‘opportunity’

The Houthis appear to be using the announcement of a maritime embargo targeting Saudi Arabia to “redraw the rules” while regional powers are under pressure, an analyst says.

Zeidon Alkinani, founding director of the Arab Perspectives Institute, told Al Jazeera there is “very clear” messaging in the announcement.

There was “no mention of Iran” suggesting the Houthis are acting to exploit what they see as a window of opportunity while both Saudi Arabia and the United States are pre-occupied with Iran. “They’re taking it as an opportunity to redraw the rules imposed on them before,” he said.

Negotiations with the Houthis could be “easier” than talks involving either the US or Iran, which remain in direct confrontation. “From a Houthi perspective they are controlling Yemen, which is in the GCC orbit,” he said.

Alkinani said direct negotiations with the Houthis would now make sense.

Saudi Arabia condemns Houthi’s blockade

Saudi Arabia has condemned remarks by the Houthis accusing the kingdom of besieging Yemen and announcing that the group will prevent maritime navigation to Saudi ports.

In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry called the accusations “baseless”.
