I have been following the Australian left’s Narrative on the effect ’stopping the boats’ has on Australian-Indonesian relations. That ABC/Fairfax Narrative is that:

The government is conducting megaphone diplomacy and the Indonesians despise this.
‘Abbott’ has ruined relations with Indonesia, does not understand them, and is a bull in the regional china shop for all those reasons summarised at Catallaxy by the shorthand ‘Abbottabbotabbott666’ (essentially the left considers him a savage compared to their own doyens of competent rectitude Brown, Milne, Rudd and Gillard).
The boats cannot be stopped due to push factors and efforts to do so will lead to adverse relations withÂ Indonesia.

The left’s conceptions aboutÂ IndonesiaÂ are based on the innate belief that they are inferior in all respects to themselves and include the remarkable assumptions that:

IndonesiaÂ is a new nation.
Indonesians are all alike.
Indonesians think the same as left-wing Australians, only not as well.
Indonesians need and should respond to the guidance of the Australian left, who know what is good for them.

These patronising views are observable in the biased, near hysterical reporting of the ABC andÂ FairfaxÂ as the government quickly stopped the ‘unstoppable’ illegal immigrant trade, now 5 weeks without a boat.

The Burned Hand Asylum Fraud

TWO of the asylum-seekers who claim to have been deliberately burned by Australian navy personnel during a turn-back operation had burns to their hands before the navy arrived. Â (The Australian)

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison furiously rejected allegations aired yesterday that asylum-seekers whose boat was turned back were abused by Australian officials.

“The Australian government is not going to put up with people sledging the Australian navy with unsubstantiated claims when they have high levels of motivation for spinning stories in order to undermine this government’s very successful border protection program,” he said.

If things are rocky, blame Indonesia first

Cameron Stewart is right to suggest that if our relations with Indonesia truly are as rocky as some of the public posturing suggests,Â much of the blame actually lies with Indonesians:

When it was reported this week that 10 asylum-seekers claimed to have been burned and beaten by Australian sailors, Security Minister Djoko Suyanto, who is leading Indonesia’s response to the turnback strategy, immediately accepted their claims as gospel. This was despite having no proof of their unlikely story, despite the obvious motivation for the returned asylum-seekers to fabricate such claims, and despite strong denials from the Australian government and from two of the country’s most senior military officers.

Regardless, Suyanto’s spokesman Agus Barnas described the alleged case of mistreatment as “torture” by Australian sailors…

While the Australian government is careful about what it says publicly about Indonesia, there is growing frustration in Canberra over what many see as hypocritical posturing by Jakarta.

In little more than a year, France has intervened twice with military missions to counter Islamic violence in its former colonies in Africa. In January 2013 French forces were successful in beating back well-trained Islamist forces and al-Qaeda extremists who had captured part of Mali. In December 2013 France took the lead to try to end the violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) that had originally been started by Islamic armed groups. With the endorsement of the United Nations, and nominally supporting an African force, France intervened to restore law and order “by all necessary measures,” in what is now a dysfunctional and chaotic society, and to provide humanitarian aid. First off the block was the former Labour Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who in anÂ article in the IndependentÂ repeated not only his inexplicable belief that his idol, Iran’s President Rouhani, was ushering in a new world order of peace and harmony, but also that the benighted Israelis were buying up Washington in order to frustrate this nirvana (I paraphrase, but you get the general idea).

The idea that there is something sinister about Israel’s desperate attempt to prevent Iran from hoodwinking the west to achieve nuclear breakout is, of course, as perverse as it is offensive. But the suggestion that Israel pays American lawmakers to take their marching orders from Jerusalem repeats the ancient libel of covert and malign Jewish power, expressed by Straw even more clearly last year when heÂ claimedÂ that ‘unlimited Jewish funds’ were being used to ‘control and divert’ US policy in the Middle East.
