The temporary marriage, or nikah mut’ah, is an ancient Islamic practice that unites man and woman as husband and wife for a limited time. Historically it was used so that a man could have a wife for a short while when travelling long distances. So why are young British Muslims adopting the practice now?
“It allowed us to meet without breaking the bounds of Sharia [Islamic law]. We both wanted to date, to go out for dinner or go shopping and just get to know each other better before getting married, which we wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise,” says Sara.
She is a 30-year-old pharmacist from Birmingham, a Shia Muslim of Pakistani heritage.

In 2012 Wegman’s Food Co. posted a sign at one of its checkout counters to appease a Muslim cashier. The sign directed customers purchasing pork or alcohol to other counters. Again, because Muslims are forbidden to consume pork and alcohol.

Suffering will strengthen Egypt’s Christians, Pope assures Coptic leader
For the embattled Christians of Egypt, “the sharing of daily suffering can become an effective instrument of unity,” Pope Francis said on May 10, as he met with Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II.
The Pope praised the leader of Egypt’s largest Christian body for establishing a National Council of Christian Churches, as a means of strengthening ties among the members of the country’s religious minority. Pope Francis said that it is a “law of Christian life” that sharing in trials will strengthen the Church. “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together,” he said.
Good luck with that. I’m afraid there won’t be much rejoicing anytime soon.
