LAMPEDUSA, Sicily (AP) – Pope Leo XIV, who has sparred with the Trump administration over its immigration crackdown, spent the Fourth of July on Saturday in the epicenter of Europe’s migration debate to honor the tens of thousands of people who have died trying to reach Europe to find freedom and prosperity.

While the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with rallies, parties and fireworks, history’s first U.S.-born pope traveled to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa to pray at a migrant cemetery and celebrate a solemn Mass for the island’s residents and newest arrivals.

A treeless strip of rock 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) long, Lampedusa is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the main port of entry into Europe for hundreds of thousands of migrants who crossed by boat from Libya or Tunisia, often smuggled by human traffickers.

Leo met with some migrants at the port and then walked alone onto the jagged jetty rocks, the wind whipping his cassock and blowing his zucchetto skullcap off as he looked out to the sea. He then blessed a plaque dedicating the dock to Pope Francis, who visited in 2013, before celebrating Mass on land.

    The US says it will reject any effort by court to assert authority over citizens, days after judges sue over sanctions.

    The US is not a party to the Rome Statute, the court’s founding document, and the country is therefore not subject to the court’s jurisdiction.

    The administration of United States President Donald Trump has once again denounced the International Criminal Court (ICC), pledging that any effort to assert authority over US citizens would be considered a “direct affront” against the country’s sovereignty.
    Israel is also not a party to the Rome Treaty — though ‘Palestine’ is — and it has rejected the court’s authority.

Europe capitulates at a moment Washington and Tehran (and possibly Oman) continue to be directly at odds over how future shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz energy chokepoint will be administered.

Bloomberg reports Thursday, “Some leading European powers now accept that ships transiting the vital Strait of Hormuz will have to pay fees to Iran and Oman, according to people familiar with the matter.”

“The prospect of some sort of service fee in the aftermath of the US and Israeli war with the Islamic Republic was described as a given by two of the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations,” the report adds.

There is a difficult but important thought experiment worth considering.
What would Europe look like if it adopted a “mirror policy” applying to its Muslim minorities the same types of legal and social restrictions that Christian minorities face in certain Muslim-majority countries?
 
In many Muslim-majority countries (MMCs), the legal and social treatment of Christian minorities is governed by a mix of constitutional religious preference, Sharia-influenced family law, blasphemy statutes, and restrictions on proselytization.
 
If Europe were to adopt a “Mirror Policy” by 2026, applying the same legal frameworks found in countries like Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, or Saudi Arabia to its Muslim populations, the continent would undergo a fundamental structural transformation.

A large fire broke out yesterday evening at the former Convent of Mercy on Stream Street, Downpatrick, a historic building attached to St Patrick’s Church. The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service deployed significant resources, with up to 70 firefighters and 10 appliances attending. Operations concluded early this morning. NIFRS believes the blaze was started deliberately. The PSNI is investigating, and the scene remains secured. No injuries have been reported.
