19 Dead as Tens of Thousands of Africans Invade Spain
Tens of thousands of Africans flooded into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Thursday. Ceuta is an autonomous city of Spain that borders Morocco on the southern side of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The Spanish Department of National Security estimated that over 49,000 people illegally crossed the border in 24 hours. Moroccan authorities deployed water cannon trucks to push people back at the gates of Ceuta. France reacted by increasing checks on its border with Spain, and Italy threatened to suspend Spain from the EU’s internal open border arrangement.
The Spanish people have their political leaders to blame for these kinds of crises. Spain’s socialist rulers have spent years offering mass amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who break into their country. Of course waves of foreigners would react by trying to get in on the action. The Spanish government has directly incentivized them to do so.

The White House blamed the left-wing policies of Spain’s socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchez for opening the door to over 60,000 migrants this week.
Several European leaders made open calls on Thursday and Friday for their countries to expel Spain from of the EU’s Schengen open-borders area in response to the dramatic illegal migrant wave storming the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa bordering Morocco and the Mediterranean Sea with about 85,000 inhabitants, is enduring its worst migrant crisis in recent times after tens of thousands swarmed the territory over the past two days, causing the widespread collapse of the enclave’s border control. About 49,000 migrants reportedly stormed into the Spanish enclave over the past hours. At least 34 people have been reported dead in Ceuta at press time.

In the Netherlands, Dutch Party for Freedom leader and Breitbart News contributor Geert Wilders called for his country to immediately close its borders and demanded Spain to be expelled from the Schengen agreement altogether.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Italy is considering suspending the Schengen Area agreement with Spain and taking other extraordinary measures to defend its borders and the safety of Italian citizens.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in a written statement shared with the television channel TV2 and the news agency Ritzau, reportedly said that the European Union should consider suspending Spain from the Schengen Area to avoid a repeat of Europe’s 2015 migrant crisis.
“The images from Ceuta are shocking. We will not accept a repeat of 2015,” Frederiksen said, per TV2. “It goes without saying that the EU must immediately take all necessary steps and consider all options, including a suspension of the Schengen agreement.”
More than 1,500 North African criminals have reached Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta by sea over the past week, many swimming from Morocco using wetsuits and inflatables. Local authorities say reception centres are overwhelmed and have called for an emergency response.

The government expected half a million people to apply. Nearly double that number came forward, in a process advocates say exposed how many migrants had been left undocumented for years in the country.
Madrid, Spain – Badr Tmairi, 22, from Morocco, has spent six years living in Spain without legal status. He arrived at 16, alone, without his family. He held legal residency briefly after turning 18, but lost it when he failed to renew it in time.
“What I want is to get my papers back so I can work as a hairdresser and travel to visit my family in Morocco,” he said.
Tmairi is one of more than a million people who have now applied for regularisation under a new scheme that contrasts with a growing European trend against irregular immigration.
He has been homeless for the past year. Without documents, finding work and decent housing in Spain is difficult.
“It’s very encouraging to know that so many people submitted an application and are trying to regularise their situation, but that huge number is also proof that the state has failed in its duty to protect the most vulnerable,” Edith Espinola, president of the Active Domestic Workers’ Service Association (SEDOAC) and spokesperson for the Regularizacion Ya (Regularisation Now), told Al Jazeera.
Regularizacion Ya, a collective made up of migrants, has led the push for regularisation since 2020. The measure grew out of a broad social consensus and has been backed by civil society organisations, the Catholic Church, trade unions and business associations.
Living without legal status, Espinola said, condemns people to social exclusion, as it has for Tmairi. Without rights or protection from abuse, they are unaligned with most of the rest of the population.

The attacks have killed at least one person in the city of Iranshahr and caused widespread power outages in Chabahar.

Spain’s far-left socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has suffered his worst electoral defeat in history.
His Socialist Party (PSOE) slumped to its worst-ever result in the Andalusia regional election, after ruling the region uninterrupted for 37 years.
The PSOE secured just 28 seats in the 109-member legislature.
This follows recent record losses for Pedro Sánchez in Extremadura and Aragón, leaving him deeply vulnerable as the right-wing People’s Party and Santiago Abascal’s Vox consolidate power ahead of the next general election.
