But Welcome to Country is controversial.

And Australians are not in agreement about it. Recent major polling shows that a clear majority now sees these rituals as divisive.

The ceremony divides Australians by ancestry, not allegiance to our nation.

And importantly, many Australian Aboriginal Christians are adamant: Smoking ceremonies invoke spirits. They’re religious/spiritual rites, not mere “cultural displays.”
