Syrian rebel commander Hassan Abdul Ghany said in a social media post on Thursday that his forces have entered the city of Hama, a strategically vital position south of the previous insurgent conquest, Aleppo. The rebels appeared to control much of the city by Thursday afternoon.

The rebel offensive reached Hama on Tuesday, engaging in heavy combat with the Syrian army and its Iran-backed militia allies. Syrian state media insisted the attack on Hama was repelled, but Syrian media said the same about Aleppo until rebel occupation of the city could no longer be denied, and there was soon little doubt that insurgents were in control of the city.

If that sounds a tad extreme, it’s because it is. The news this week that the current Labor government has overturned decades of bipartisanship on Israel and decided, yet again, to take a position of what can only be described as enmity and hostility towards the Jewish state would no doubt have Labor legends of the calibre of Bob Hawke and Doc Evatt spinning in their graves. It is way past time that the likes of Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd, Bill Shorten and others, well regarded for their attitude towards Israel, spoke up, as only former Labor minister Michael Danby has had the courage to do, and condemn Labor antisemitism.

Amazon’s service in Germany reportedly blocked users from submitting reviews on former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s memoirs amid supposed “unusual review activity”.

Merkel, who dominated German and European politics for 16 years, released her autobiography Freedom: Memories 1954 – 2021 last week, however, users in Germany have reported not being free to give their thoughts on the memoirs.

According to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, those attempting in Germany to submit a review to the book on Amazon were greeted with the message: “Unfortunately, we cannot accept reviews of this item. This product has limitations on submitting reviews. This can be for a variety of reasons, such as unusual review activity.”
