Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir on Monday pardoned a British woman teacher jailed for 15 days for insulting religion and she will be released in an hour, a presidential advisor told AFP.
“She was pardoned thanks to the mediation of Lord Ahmed and Baroness Warsi. She will be released in about an hour,” Mahjoub Fadl Badri told AFP.

A Sudanese court on Thursday jailed Gillian Gibbons to 15 days in prison for insulting religion by naming a teddy bear after the Prophet Mohammed at the exclusive English school where she taught in Khartoum.
Two British Muslim peers, Lord Nazir Ahmed and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, from the upper house of parliament, were on Monday meeting Beshir at the Republican Palace after flying to Khartoum in order to secure a pardon.
The arrest and jail sentence of the 54-year-old mother of two sparked outrage in Britain and a diplomatic crisis between London and Khartoum, further straining relations already frayed over nearly five years of war in Darfur.

Not a single Presidential candidate, not a single official in the American government, has uttered a single word about the telling sentence handed down to the now-pardoned — for “image” reasons –by that Muslim despot and fanatic Bashir, who thinks nothing of mass-murdering the blacks in Darfur, and the Christians in the south of the Sudan)– hapless Mrs. Gibbons.

While Islamic law does stipulate that the jizya is not to be collected from women and children, reality in many cases has been different. According to the pioneering historian of dhimmitude, Bat Ye’or:
The poll tax was extorted by torture. The tax inspectors demanded gifts for themselves; widows and orphans were pillaged and despoiled. In theory, women, paupers, the sick, and the infirm were exempt from the poll tax; nevertheless, Armenian, Syriac, and Jewish sources provide abundant proof that the jizya was exacted from children, widows, orphans, and even the dead. A considerable number of extant documents, preserved over the centuries, testify to the persistence and endurance of these measures. In Aleppo in 1683, French Consul Chevalier Laurent d’Arvieux noted that ten-year-old Christian children paid the jizya. On the surface, female circumcision sounds like sexual abuse: it is the removal of a young woman’s clitoris practiced by some African cultures as an initiation ritual. While FGC (female genital cutting) has been roundly condemned by many Western women, several African scholars will be arguing in favor of the ritual at the American Anthropological Association’s annual meeting. Dr. Fuambai Ahmadu of Sierra Leone, a post doctoral fellow at the University of Chicago, is one of the scholars who is pro-FGC, and even had her own clitoris cut with fellow members of the Kono ethnic group as an adult. Ahmadu says that her Western “feminist sisters insist on denying us this critical aspect of becoming a woman in accordance with our unique and powerful cultural heritage.”
* Yes doctor. We deny you this ‘critical aspect of becoming a woman’ - and if you insist on your ‘powerful cultural heritage’ piss off to Africa and get some more until it comes out from the other end.
Another proponent of FGC, Dr. Richard Shweder, says that Westerners conveniently ignore the fact that they produce their own kinds of genital mutilation in the form of the vaginal rejuvenation of women and circumcision for boys. Shweder says that, “‘First World’ feminist issues and political correctness and activism have triumphed over the critical assessment of evidence.” Ahmadu also has an essay called “Ain’t I a woman too?: challenging myths of sexual dysfunction in circumcised women”, where she insists that women who have undergone FGC still experience orgasm and a great deal of sexual pleasure.
I asked a friend who has lived in Liberia and works for a post-conflict justice association what she thinks about FGC, and she points out that “There are lots of versions of the procedure. The most severe being cut off the clit, the inner labia, and SEW CLOSED the vaginal hole.” That sounds like straight abuse to me. But according to my friend, some modified versions only involve pricking the clitoris. “It’s about degrees and when the practice, in its entirety is accepted, there are no ways to moderate the procedure.”
What do you think? Is the pro-FGC argument just cultural relativism? Or is the issue more nuanced than Westerners have realized?

General Sir Charles Napier was impeccably multicultural: “You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We need dozens of Napiers in this day and age, with a Churchill directing each one. That’s the only way this war will be won-not by ransoming foolish infidels, bowing to Korans and hoping that the enemy will be nice to us if we’re nice to them.
Find an alternative to oil, in the meantime harvest the oil in the civilised world (there’s plenty of it) and quarantine these revolting sub-humans, and deport all muslims from our countries. Have nothing to do with them.
There, that’s solved the biggest problem civilisation faces.
Exactly right, urban11. All that is necessary is the will to do these things, something all Western “leaders” lack at this time. Apparently, they await a calamity of epic proportions before summoning sufficient willpower to act correctly. That or the masses will have to compel them violently and that too will require some sort of disaster.
Now that Gibbons has stated her respect for the Koranism that nearly killed her I hope Britain didn’t pay more than about $1.50 to get her back. What a dope!
