Waleed Aly, a counter-terrorism expert (if Waleed Aly is a counter-terrorism expert’ you just go ahead and call me Elvis) and founding member of the new SBS comedy Salam Cafe, reckons there came a point where the racist insults (which race is Islam again?) he received in the street stopped offending him and started making him laugh.
“The funniest thing is the one-liners you get,” he said. “How can you compete with comedy like that? After a while it stops being offensive and just starts being funny.”
Salam Cafe, the brainchild of the show’s regular panel members Mr Aly, Ahmed Imam and Susan Carland, takes a rare look at the funnier side of the issues that affect Muslims.

The show includes regular comedy skits, panel discussions and, disturbingly for Australia’s international image, vox pops providing viewers with an insight into some of the inaccurate perceptions of Islam.
* Just what are these “inaccurate perceptions of Islam?’ Why don’t they tell us? And why is nobody asking the obvious: why there are so many ‘inaccurate perceptions’ about Islam? But perhaps its not at all the case, because we understand much better what’s at stake while our politicians diddle and fail us every day…
A visit to Adelaide by the show’s roaming reporter and stand-up comedian Nazeem Hussein revealed some of the misconceptions. One respondent thought Islam was a country “somewhere in Iraq”, while another wasn’t sure what Muslims were, asking if they “eat people?”
Ms Carland, a politics academic and a convert to Islam, said she believed the show would appeal to a wider audience because it took the Australian approach of self-deprecation. ”People like the fact that we are willing to laugh at ourselves and our situations,” she said. ( Muslims are the funniest people on the globe, hahahaha!)
“You either reclaim what can be a really grim situation with humour or you get frustrated, mad and dejected.”
She said the panellists drew on real situations they had faced because of their faith.
“The show isn’t about Islam but Muslims,” Ms Carland said. “We are trying to show people the human side of the religion because they seem to think we’re not human. There’s so much ignorance and fear.”
* Tell your co-religionists to stop blowing shit up and beheading people, Susan. Perhaps someone might start listening to you, after that…Or do something about clit-cutting…
With characters such as Uncle Sam, a wildly boisterous tunic-wearing Muslim uncle, and Fatima “Teems”, a teenybopper who has frequent clashes with her father, and with segments such as “Where’s Osama?” and ”Extremist Makeover”, the show was bound to ruffle a few feathers.

Although most of the feedback on the show’s website was positive, some viewers did not hide their distaste. One comment read: “ur guys just destroying the religion. allah should burn ur guys in hell fire. u bastards.”
Another read: “I can’t believe SBS are wasting taxpayer dollars on this religious propaganda.”
Ms Carland said she was surprised that so much of the feedback was positive. “I expected it to be a lot more 50- 50,” she said. “We do get emails like, ‘I can’t believe you Muslims are laughing’ but most of what we hear is a lot more positive.”
* Promoting Islam. Because nothing else matters:
Mr Aly, too, was pleased by the response. “There are a lot of people who are just happy to see Muslims on TV that are not terrorists.”

Salam Cafe debuted with 165,000 viewers, slightly more than Newstopia, which previously occupied the Wednesday night timeslot.

God will probably accommodate him in the former, but not the latter.
There seems to be a recurring theme in Islamic thought and world views of people’s qualities and value as a person being inherited. The concept of the sins of the father’s being retained by the children and victories of the ancestors being justification for resting on non-existent laurels.

Even assuming that a criminal conviction in colonial times is proof of being the “criminal dregs” of white society it is so natural to transfer this status to the descendants that it is not even questioned. It is just like the fact that children of Muslims have no choice of what religion they may belong to since Islam is inherited. Meanwhile, “kaffirs” are to blame for every act of the Crusades and Muslims retain the “glory” of Jihad even if they have not actually conquered anything lately. They are “responsible” for the discoveries and inventions of the cultures they absorbed by right of birth even if such discoveries and inventions become very thin once Islam gets fully implemented.
The Islam view tends to be one where it is not traits which are inherited but moral standing and worth.
How often do we hear islamists call Abraham their father. Yet, Abraham did not seek the death of others; in fact Abraham prayed that God would spare Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham was an intercessor, not a murderer, thief, rapist and what not. To those who claim Abraham their father and persecute others, Jesus succinctly points out:

I feel really angy that this white-washing show seeks to pull the wool over Australian eyes and we mug taxpayers are paying for it. I noticed that they stressed it would be about ‘Muslims, not about Islam’ because then, well, things might get a bit real… and they would held to account for the foundational beliefs of this ideology — its denial of human equality, its teachings about the inferiority of women, its rejection of human rights, its rejection of free and open enquiry, its murder of ‘apostates’ and ‘blasphemers’ where possible and its hateful plan to islamise the planet. What a nightmare scenario. If it did ever come about, they’d end up eating each other anyway…it is a system based on lies and hate. It is doomed in today’s open society — but it will inflict terrible suffering as it lashes its dying tail…
We’re in the same boat in Canada – our so-called “national” broadcaster, the CBC, which is supported by our taxes, shows Little Mosque on the Prairie, a comedy about muslims. Sickening.

I too feel angry that SBS have put on this deceitful show. I’m also angry that Islam is promoted at our public secular universities, with mosques and Islamic departments, that Muslims and useful idiot Jews and Christians are going into schools and feeding kids the lie that they are all Abrahamic religions and just like us. I’m also angry at the proliferation of halal foods in the major supermarkets (most commercial yoghurts contain halal gelatine).
I could go on about the way sharia is infiltrating into our free and egalitarian society under our noses.
What’s the matter with our government and our people? Are they absolutely blind to what is happening?
