In Australia a national Inquiry is being held on the freedom of religion and belief…

In The Netherlands Geert Wilders is to be prosecuted for ‘inciting hatred’.

Australia – Freedom of Religion and Belief

In Australia, the Australian Human Rights Commission is conducting an Inquiry called ‘Freedom of Religion and Belief’. 

Their aim is NOT to give us MORE freedom but to limit the freedom we have. 

It might sound nice – but this sort of law leads to vilification laws like Victoria’s which have seen two pastors at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal - charged with inciting hatred against Muslims…

The Inquiry asks questions about diversity, sexuality and the involvement of ‘religious’ people in politics!

When HREOC did a similar inquiry in 1998, they proposed a ‘Freedom of Religion Act’. 

This time they are concerned about discrimination and vilification, particularly of Muslims. Any proposals to come out of this Inquiry are expected to restrict free speech. 

Our Constitution already protects the free exercise of religion (S 116). The Inquiry also asks if a Bill of Rights will help protect religious freedom. A Bill of Rights is another avenue of restricting free speech and handing power to the courts so we reject that as well.

                                   

PLEASE send a submission to the Inquiry opposing any limiting of our religious freedom.

Overseas – Free Speech threatened – Geert Wilders trial

Freedom of speech is already being restricted overseas. Just last week, Geert Wilders, the Dutch politician who released the film Fitna, about radical Islam, has been charged with the inciting hatred against Muslims. 

The Court of Appeal in Amsterdam overturned a decision by a lower court not to prosecute Geert Wilders. They have ordered that he stand trial for “the incitement to hatred and discrimination based on his statements in various media about Muslims and their belief in The Netherlands”.

She goes on to document the case, outline the message of the Fitna film, before talking of the support given by the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine to Hitler during World War 2 to Hitler, and giving Winston Churchill’s famous quote about Islam in The River War in 1899 and subsequent comments made by him during WW2.

U.S. releases Iranian ship believed to be carrying arms for Gaza

The U.S. navy was forced to release an Iranian boat detained in the Red Sea 
on suspicion of carrying arms to Hamas-ruled Gaza. Weapons of various kinds 
were found aboard the ship, which was flying the Cypriot flag when it was 
stopped January 19.

The ship was released Tuesday when it became apparent that there was no 
legal basis for holding it.

                           

At a press conference in Washington, Admiral Mike Mullen, who heads the 
Joint Chiefs of Staff, said although American naval personnel boarded the 
ship and found the weapons, they had no legal authority to impound the arms. 
He suggested that more stringent resolutions by the UN Security Council 
would be required, stating clearly that Iran is violating standards against 
arms smuggling.

Mullen stressed involving Iran in solving regional problems, including the 
deteriorating condition in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but that ultimately the 
matter should be left to diplomats. With regard to the Obama 
administration’s approach to the Iranian threat, he said that the military 
option is not off the table, but that it must remain the last option.

On January 26, 2009, the Al-Jazeera TV website www.aljazeera.net posted an interview with Abu Basir Nasir Al-Wahishi, Emir of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. According to the interview prologue, the interview was conducted as “white phosphorous bombs were raining down on Gaza City” and at the same time as Osama bin Laden’s audio message was released – that is, most likely before the ceasefire in Gaza. The prologue also states that AQAP operatives Nayef bin Muhammad Al-Qahtani and Abu Sufyan Al-Azdi Sa’id Al-Shihri were likewise present; Al-Shihri is a former Guantanamo detainee who recently appeared together with Al-Wahishi in a video.

Israel ‘must sack’ military rabbi

A human rights group in Israel has called for the military’s chief rabbi to be dismissed for alleged incitement against Palestinians.

The group, Yesh Din, said Rabbi Avichai Rontzki distributed a booklet to troops in the Gaza offensive, which advised them they were fighting “murderers”.

The booklet, citing an ultra-nationalist rabbi, told soldiers to show no mercy to a “cruel enemy”.

The Israeli military has not yet commented on the issue.

Yesh Din, which says it is dedicated to defending human rights in the Occupied Territories, called on Defence Minister Ehud Barak to dismiss the rabbi.
