ROME — Former Vatican emissary Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano has refused to obey a summons to the Vatican to face charges of schism, restating he does not recognize Pope Francis as the head of the Catholic Church.

“As I stated in my Communiqué of June 20, I do not recognize the authority of the tribunal that claims to judge me, nor of its Prefect, nor of the one who appointed him,” Archbishop Viganò said in a statement.

“This decision of mine, which is certainly painful, is not the result of haste or a spirit of rebellion; but rather is dictated by the moral necessity which, as Bishop and Successor of the Apostles, obliges me in conscience to bear witness to the Truth, that is, to God Himself, to Our Lord Jesus Christ,” he declared.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Viganò as Apostolic Nuncio to the United States in 2011 and the archbishop served in this role for five years, from 2011 to 2016.

Viganò became something of a conservative superstar in 2018, when he published an explosive report accusing Pope Francis of reinstating homosexual abuser Cardinal Theodore McCarrick to a position of prominence despite knowing of McCarrick’s serial abuse.

In his 11-page affidavit, Archbishop Viganò asserted that Pope Benedict had imposed “canonical sanctions” on Cardinal McCarrick in 2009-2010 forbidding him from traveling, celebrating Mass in public, or participating in public meetings, but that Pope Francis later lifted these sanctions and made McCarrick a close personal advisor.

34-year-old Iranian man armed with a knife has attacked 3 police officers in Lauf an der Pegnitz in Germany. 

A man who reportedly attacked three police officers with a knife near Nuremberg in Germany died after police shot him near a train station on Sunday, according to a police spokesman.

The 34-year-old Iranian citizen died at the scene of the shooting in the southern town of Lauf an der Pegnitz, despite immediate first aid measures being initiated, the spokesman said on Monday.

The man is said to have initially targeted a police patrol car, and then tried to attack the three officers while brandishing a knife when they got out of their vehicle, according to an initial police investigation.

A female federal police officer shot the man, according to authorities. The shooting took place at a bus stop outside of a commuter rail station in the town.

A CDU politician in Germany is under investigation for hate crimes after he reacted to a knife attack by an Afghan migrant by calling for the expulsion of foreign criminals from the country.

On the opening day of the Euro 2024 football tournament, a knife-wielding Afghan migrant went on a stabbing spree in Wolmirstedt which left one person dead and multiple others injured.

Detlef Gürth, a state lawmaker for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Saxony-Anhalt, reacted by posting on X, “This pack has to get out of Germany.”

And that was literally it. That’s all he said before subsequently deleting the tweet.

I left Australia five weeks ago, sick of writing of every fresh example of the Albanese government turning a fine country into a poor and divided one. Maybe seeing some European countries would make me better appreciate my own. Ha! I’ve instead come back not just disliking this government, but despising it.

Distance has made even clearer how childishly stupid, blind and dishonest it is. For instance, I was in France and Belgium when Anthony Albanese’s ministers attacked the Coalition’s plan for nuclear power by posting pictures of three-eyed fish and a koala.

Anyone in France or Belgium would have laughed at them. You see, I had lunches there in nuclear-powered restaurants and toured nuclear-powered museums because France gets 60 per cent of its electricity from nuclear energy, and Belgium nearly 50. Yet not once did I see there some mutant beast with three eyes. I couldn’t even find a squirrel with a squint.
