Haitham al-Haddad, a British Islamic scholar and jurist, the chair of the Fatwa Committee for the Islamic Council of Europe, said in a panel discussing “Muslims in the West” that the situation of Muslims in the U.K. and in the West is a lot better than it was 20 years ago. He said that if you go outside, you would think you were in a “second Afghanistan,” but it is in fact “Londonistan.” Al-Haddad said that Muslims in the West should not consider themselves a “subjected minority,” because they are the “leaders of humanity.” The panel was part of the “Anchored by Quran” conference organized by the Michigan-based Miftaah Institute in Manchester and London during August 2023 and it was uploaded to the Miftah Institute YouTube channel on September 26. Two American Islamic scholars also participated in the panel, Yasser Qadhi, the dean of The Islamic Seminary of America and resident scholar at the Texas East Plano Islamic Center and Abdullah Waheed, co-founder and dean of the Miftaah Institute and Director of Islamic Affairs at Flint Islamic Center in Michigan.
Geert Wilders’ hopes of becoming prime minister of the Netherlands are becoming dimmer in the face of challenges to forming a coalition government. No one expected the talks to be free of obstacles since Wilders’ sweeping election victory in November, but now they’ve broken down altogether. Pieter Omtzigt, leader of the center-right New Social Contract (NSC), walked away from negotiations, thus stymieing “efforts to assemble a working alliance for his Party for Freedom (PVV).” While CNBC reported the reason for breakdown in coalition talks as “shock” over “the state of public finances” and “different financial expectations,” Islam has been a central issue, even if not the only issue.
Anti-Islamification populist Geert Wilders emerged the leader of the largest party and likely next Prime Minister from the November election, but Dutch coalition formation is infamously torturous and now a key party has walked away from the negotiating table.
Nieuw Sociaal Contract, (New Social Contract, NSC) a newly formed centre-right populist party focused on state reform to enhance good government, fiscal responsibility, and welfare dramatically walked away from the coalition negotiation process this week, citing fiscal concerns. The leaders of the other three political parties in talks to form the next Dutch government reacted with surprise and even dismay at the development, calling it unexpected and saying they read about it in the national news before they heard about it from the NSC themselves.

The now-elderly woman is still a member of the extremist Marxist group which is known for hijacking planes, assassinations and suicide bombings. The PFLP is regarded as a terrorist organisation by the United States, the European Union and Canada, while Australia has subjected the group to financial sanctions.
In 1969, she helped hijack Trans World Airlines Flight 840 travelling from Rome, Italy, to Tel Aviv, Israel, as the group believed Israel’s ambassador to the U.S. was on board. No one was injured in the attack but the hijackers blew up the plane’s nose. Ms Khaled was involved in a second hijacking a year later when she attempted to hijack El Al Flight 219 from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to New York City. She, alongside another co-hijacker, threatened to detonate grenades inside the plane if the pilot did not let them into the cockpit. Gunshots were fired and the plane went into a nosedive before landing. Following the attacks, Ms Khaled spent a month-and-a-half imprisoned in Syria and a month detained in Britain.
