French ‘virgin’ ruling reversed |

A French court of appeal has overruled the decision to annul the marriage of two Muslims because the bride had lied about being a virgin. They are now effectively married again – even though both partners said they accepted the original judgement. That verdict had caused emotional debate and outrage among some feminists, who said it amounted to a “fatwa” against women’s liberty. But the husband’s lawyers said the case had nothing to do with religion. They argued that the wife had breached the wedding contract, and tricked her husband into marriage. Under the French civil code, a marriage can be annulled if a spouse has lied about an “essential quality” of the relationship. ‘Kandahar-style’ According to media reports, the husband, an engineer in his thirties, married the trainee nurse in the summer of 2006, having been assured by her that she had never previously had a boyfriend. A BRADFORD car dealer who killed a father and son when he crashed into the back of their vehicle on the M62 was warned today he faced a “substantial” jail sentence.Gary Proctor, 47, and his son James, 16, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, died in hospital following the collision in the early hours of August 3 as they travelled to Manchester Airport.

Lord Ahmed faces driving charge

Lord Ahmed of Rotherham (pictured), Britain’s first Muslim peer, has been charged with dangerous driving following a crash in which a man was killed last Christmas Day. Ahmed, 51, a property developer, was at the wheel of his X Type Jaguar when it was involved in a collision with a car that had broken down in the fast lane of the M1. The driver, Martyn Gombar, died instantly while Lord Ahmed, who was in the car with his wife and mother, suffered severe facial injuries and shock.
The charge of dangerous driving follows an investigation by traffic police, who allege that the peer had sent a text message to a friend shortly before the accident.
Ahmed, who became a Labour peer in 1998, is no stranger to controversy. In 2007, after Salman Rushdie was given a knighthood, he said he was appalled that “a man who has not only been abusive to Muslims, but also to Christians” had received such an honour. (Continued below)

Mr Proctor’s wife Catherine, 44, survived the crash near Rochdale, Greater Manchester, but needed treatment for serious rib and arm injuries.
The family were heading to Manchester Airport to start their dream holiday to Florida.

Indian Navy sinks pirate ‘mother ship’

In a first major offensive to neutralise the threat of sea piracy off Somalia coast, the Indian Navy has sunk a ‘mother ship’ of a group of pirates during a fierce battle in the Gulf of Aden.

The pro-active operation from the Navy warship INS Tabar comes a week after it saved two merchant vessels from sea pirates in the Gulf of Aden near the Horn of Africa.
The Navy said the stealth frigate, currently deployed there for anti-piracy surveillance and patrol operations, had successfully sorted out the pirates last evening 285 nautical miles south west off Salalah in Oman.

Frank Vanhecke, a Belgian member of the European Parliament for the far-right Vlaams Belang, was accused of incitement to hatred and xenophobia under Belgian law, but could not be prosecuted unless the European Parliament waived his immunity, which it did in a vote on Tuesday.
