U.N. tells Serbia to quit interfering in Kosovo

PRISTINA (Reuters) – U.N. authorities in Kosovo told Serbia on Wednesday to stop interfering in Serb areas of the new state, where a Serb boycott has fuelled speculation Belgrade is trying to partition the territory.

The U.N. mission called on Serbia to respect its mandate in the former Serbian province, where the 90-percent Albanian majority declared independence with Western-backing last month.

It said Serbia should cooperate in re-establishing customs points on Kosovo’s northern border, which were burned down by Serb mobs, allow Serb police officers to return to work and stop strengthening Belgrade-financed “parallel structures” in health, education, courts and administration.

“If Belgrade says publicly that (U.N. Security Council Resolution) 1244 should be respected, we expect them to put their money where their mouth is,” U.N. mission spokesman Alexander Ivanko told a news conference.

“We are trying to re-establish the courts, we are trying to re-establish the customs,” he said. “This will take time, it will not happen tomorrow.”

Kosovo declared independence on Feb 17, nine years after NATO bombed to drive out Serbian forces and halt the killing and ethnic cleansing of Albanians in a two-year Serbian counter-insurgency war.

Backed by big-power ally Russia, Serbia has rejected the secession and is instructing the 120,000 remaining Serbs to do the same, deepening an ethnic divide that almost nine years of international administration since the war has failed to tackle.

Oric’s Hague Acquittal Enrages Serbia

 

03 July 2008 Belgrade _ Serbia has condemned a decision by The Hague Tribunal to acquit Srebrenica Army Chief Naser Oric, saying it is “another serious blow to international justice.”

But the verdict will not have effect on Serbia’s further cooperation with the tribunal, some politicians vowed.

Serbia’s National Council for Cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, ICTY, based in The Hague, added in a statement that it would be difficult to explain to anyone in Serbia that the tribunal does not have “double criteria” in deciding on command responsibility.

Earlier on Thursday, the Appeals Chamber acquitted Oric, a former commander of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Srebrenica, of crimes during 1992 and 1993 because judges ruled the first trial failed to prove he had control over his men. “Though we have restrained from commenting on the tribunal’s rulings so far, we have to say that this one cannot contribute to either achieving justice and truth or to regional reconciliation which is one of the basic intentions of the ICTY,” the Council’s statement said.

Bruno Vekaric, the spokesman for the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor, agreed, adding that Oric’s acquittal “will only strengthen those who anyway believe in (the tribunal’s) selective justice.”

He did not want to go into the details of the verdict but said that it was proven beyond doubt that “terrible crimes were committed against the Serbs in the town.”

Former Serbian Justice Minister Vladan Batic also said that those who criticised the tribunal would now have more material, adding “such a verdict leaves a bitter taste.”

“People Who Vote Wilders Must Die”

A Moroccan youth group from Delft in the Netherlands, calling themselves “Scheme 015 Delftse Samenzwering Shit,” [samenzwering means conspiracy] has posted a video clip threatening to kill voters and sympathizers of Dutch politician Geert Wilders. The clip shows a group of Moroccans youths provoking two Dutch lads on a crowded public train. The hooded Moroccans ask the lads, who are dressed in black, what the badges on their clothes mean. At first the lads do not react. When the Moroccans start pulling at the lads’ clothes the latter ask to be left alone. At this the Moroccans grab them from their seats and beat them up.

* Update: Show your film in parliament, MPs tell Wilders

Socialist, Liberal, GroenLinks and D66 MPs would not object to Geert Wilders’ showing his anti-Koran film in the parliament building itself, the Volkskrant reports on Friday.

Wilders has dropped plans for a formal launch in the nearby press centre because of the security costs.

‘A lack of money should not stop an MP doing his job,’ GroenLinks leader Femke Halsema was quoted as saying.

D66 leader Alexander Pechtold said the government should pay the security costs. ‘If he wants to do it in parliament itself, he can count on my support,’ Pechtold told the paper.

Wilders has not made a request to use the parliamentary facilities and refused to explain his reasoning.

Think about that. What that means is that the conditions in Gaza were terrible under Egyptian rule, and then, once the Israelis took over in 1967, steadily improved as long as Israel was in control, and then, now that Israel has been entirely out of Gaza (so much for this “occupation” the local Arabs in Gaza keep screaming about — they mean, of course, Israel itself is occupied by Jews, and that simply, to them, isn’t right), conditions have again, under Arab rule, slowly degenerated. They have degenerated to the extent that conditions of life now approach, despite Israel turning over intact much-improved infrastructure, and those greenhouses that were promptly looted and destroyed by the “Palestinians,” and the billions in aid money received from Infidels (strangely, nothing substantial appears to come from fellow members of the Umma), what they were the last time Arabs were in control.

And yet these British NGOs dare to suggest that this is Israel’s fault? What nonsense people are allowed to get away with, if no one calls them to account. NGOs have come a long and very dismal way since the dreams of Rene Cassin.

Al-Jizzeera slams Israeli boycott as ‘attack on freedom of expression’

The Foreign Ministry’s decision on Wednesday to boycott Al-Jazeera stemmed from government outrage at the network’s coverage of Israel Defense Forces operations in Gaza, which the ministry said constituted incitement to terror.

The Qatari-based TV network’s Jerusalem bureau denounced the decision as anti-democratic and an attack on the freedom of expression.

 John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has been called upon to renounce a church leader he considers his spiritual guide for urging a Christian war to destroy the “false religion” of Islam.

A number of prominent US weblogs demanded he reject the support of Reverend Rod Parsley, of the World Harvest Church of Columbus, an influential televangelist and political figure who campaigned alongside him in the run up to the Ohio primary.

On February 26, a week before the Ohio vote, Mr McCain appeared at a campaign rally in Cincinnati with the evangelical pastor, who praised the candidate as a “strong, true, consistent conservative”. With Mike Huckabee, a Baptist preacher, then continuing to snap at his heels, Mr Parsley’s endorsement was a boon to Mr McCain’s efforts to knock out his last remaining challenger and win over social conservatives. Standing side-by-side with the minister, Mr McCain hailed him as a “spiritual guide”.

Since then, the writings of Mr Parsley have attracted attention from political commentators. Several have noted that Mr McCain’s Democratic rival, Barack Obama, was forced to publicly denounce and reject the support of Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, after he received unsolicited praise from the controversial figure.

The leader of a 12,000-member megachurch, Mr Parsley has written several books detailing his fundamentalist views, including the 2005 Silent No More. In this contentious work, Mr Parsley castigates homosexuals, abortionists, the entertainment industry and civil libertarians before turning his attention to the perceived threat to the United States from Muslims.

In a chapter titled “Islam: The Deception of Allah,” Mr Parsley speaks of Allah as a “demon spirit” and urges “war between Islam and Christian civilisation”. There is no difference between violent Islamist extremists and moderate Muslims, he argues.

* The man has a point.

“I cannot tell you how important it is that we understand the true nature of Islam, that we see it for what it really is,” he writes. “In fact, I will tell you this: I do not believe our country can truly fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historical conflict with Islam.

“I know that this statement sounds extreme, but I do not shrink from its implications. The fact is that America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed, and I believe September 11, 2001, was a generational call to arms that we can no longer ignore.”

It is not the first time that Mr McCain’s desperation to win over the religious right has landed him in trouble. The Republican had already angered Catholics by cosying up to John Hagee, the leader of an evangelical Texas megachurch who has described the Roman Catholic Church as “the great whore” and a “false cult system”. However the row did not prevent Mr McCain from storming to victory in all four March 4 primaries and laying claim to the party nomination.

Mr McCain had already been forced to dissociate himself from one speaker at the rally, a conservative talk radio host who repeatedly stressed Mr Obama’s middle name “Hussein” as he introduced the Republican candidate.

Today, several liberal commentators called on Mr McCain to explain what he meant when he said Mr Parsley was his “spiritual guide”.

Steve Benen wrote on Crooks and Liars: “It’s unsettling, but in this political climate, it’s easier for a right-wing religio-political figure to get away with anti-Muslim animus than anti-Catholic.”

He added: “But if McCain is going to tout Parsley as a “spiritual guide,” it’s certainly worth learning more about where Parsley might “guide” the Republican nominee.”

Sen. Barack Obama’s pastor says blacks should not sing “God Bless America” but “God damn America.” 

An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright’s sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans.

“The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people,” he said in a 2003 sermon. “God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”

In addition to damning America, he told his congregation on the Sunday after Sept. 11, 2001 that the United States had brought on al Qaeda’s attacks because of its own terrorism.

“We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye,” Rev. Wright said in a sermon on Sept. 16, 2001.

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost,” he told his congregation.

Dutch Establishment Threatens to Prosecute Wilders and Claim Damages

Geert Wilders, the Dutch politician who is making a 10-minute movie about Islam entitled Fitna (Arabic for “ordeal”), has felt compelled to cancel the March 28 press conference where he intended to show his film. The Nieuwspoort press center in The Hague, which is run by a board of journalists, publishers and government press officers, demanded that Wilders pay 400,000 euros for extra safety measures. “Apparently, you have to be a millionaire to organize such an event,” Mr Wilders said. “Even if I had the money I am not going to spend it on a press conference.”

No Dutch broadcaster, public or private, has been willing to show the film. There are indications that Fitna will also be banned on Youtube, which removed a clip featuring Mr Wilders two week ago, on so-called “ethical grounds”.

The Dutch showed what stuff they were made of two years ago, when they made life impossible for Ayaan Hirsi Ali, an elected member of their parliament, just like Mr Wilders. Her neighbours sued to get her removed from the apartment where she was living under police protection. The court of appeal ordered Ms Hirsi Ali to leave her house within four months, invoking… the European treaty for Human Rights.

I certainly am one of the first Muslims to consider Islamism to be fascism. This is not a subjective decision but rather a serious, academic argument. Fascism and Islamism are comparable in many aspects: Fascism, without evoking all its particularities, bears similarities to trends also present in Islamism. I am, of course, making a reference to their will to exterminate the Jews. On this point, the Islamists may go even further in their doctrine than the Nazis did, considering that the end of the world could only occur when there are no Jews left on earth. In the three monotheist religions, apocalypse, end of the world, and doomsday exist and are liturgical events invested with a high degree of spirituality. Hence, the Islamists interpret the end of the world in a very special way. Whereas it is written nowhere in the Qur’an, exegetes describe the end of the world as the day when even the trees and rocks will be able to talk and tell the Muslims: “Come here, there is a Jew hiding behind me. Come and kill him.” And this would go on, until there would not be any Jew left on earth. This ideology is pure fascism.

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai called Saturday on his countrymen to stop forcing their under-aged daughters to marry, especially to men several decades older, and to allow them to be educated.

Speaking at a ceremony in Kabul attended by about 300 women to mark International Women’s Day, Karzai also said threats from a Taliban-led insurgency were keeping girls out of school.

“I call on religious leaders, tribal elders and particularly men: stop forcing your under-aged girls to marry, stop marrying them to old men,” he said, adding later he was referring in particular to men aged above 50.

Up to 80 percent of Afghan women face forced marriage, and nearly two-thirds are married before the legal age of 16, according to the United Nations.

Karzai also stressed the importance of educating Afghan girls, who were denied schooling under the 1996-2001 Taliban government.

“In parts of Afghanistan, Afghan girls can’t go to schools because of the terrorism problem,” he said. “In other places, like places without terrorism problems, girls are not allowed to go to schools.”

Bangladesh retreats on women’s rights after clerics protest

DHAKA (AFP) — Bangladesh’s military-backed government has backed down from a policy to ensure equal property rights to women amid angry protests by Muslim clerics that the move would override Islamic law.

The country’s law minister Hasan Arif said the government “does not have any plan to enact any laws that goes against the Koran and the traditions of Prophet Mohammad,” a government statement said.

Arif gave the assurance to top Islamic clerics and scholars late on Tuesday, after Islamic groups warned of nationwide protests, saying they would not tolerate any law that went against sharia, the Islamic law code.

Sharia is based on the teachings of the Koran, prescribing both religious and secular duties, from prayer to alms-giving, as well as penalties for law-breaking. There are many interpretations of the sharia.
The clerics’ complaints followed a new government policy announced last week which stated women should have equal property rights.
Bangladesh, whose population is 90 percent Muslim, has a secular legal system but in matters related to inheritance and marriage Muslims follow sharia law.
Sharia practised in Bangladesh’s inheritance law generally stipulates that a girl would inherit half of what her brother gets. Women groups have long protested against the disparity and demanded equal rights.

The minister’s comments came after Islamist parties and top clerics called protests across the country this Friday against what they called “laws against Islam.”
The leader of the group Mufti Fazlul Haq Amini said that despite the government’s assurances they would go ahead with protests until the “anti-sharia” provisions were officially dropped.

It’s time to take a stand against Islam and Sharia

Maryam Namazie, head of the Council of Ex-Muslims in Britain, says that rights are for individuals, not religions or beliefs

Picture this, says Maryam Namazie: “A child is swathed in cloth from head to toe every day. Everything but her face and hands are covered for fear that a man might find her attractive. Namazie is the founder of the Council of Ex-Muslims in Britain (CEMB) which started life in the middle of last year.

Maryam is adamant that no form of Sharia should be allowed here. “It is fundamentally discriminatory and misogynist,” she says and is dismissive of the idea that people would be able to choose between Sharia and civil jurisdiction. Women could be railroaded into a Sharia court, she says. “This would hit people who need the protection of British law more than anyone else.”

She believes that we are confused about the meaning of human rights. “Rights are for individuals, not for religions or beliefs. ‘Every human is equal’ does not mean that every belief is equal.” Islamists portray themselves as victims, she says, and policymakers have bought into this. Namazie says that the Muslim Council of Britain should not be seen as representative of British Muslims – but would nonetheless welcome any opportunities to debate with it. “Ex-Muslims are in a good position to challenge political Islam,” she says. “We must not let little girls or anyone else lose their human rights. We can’t tolerate the intolerable for any reason – including religion.”

The IHEU statement and Ligabo’s report came against the background of mounting success by the OIC, currently holding a summit in Dakar, in achieving passage of U.N. resolutions against “defamation of religions.”
Although several such resolutions have been adopted by the two-year-old Council and its predecessor since 1999, in December the U.N.’s General Assembly easily passed a similar one for the first time over mainly Western and Latin American opposition.

The OIC — backed by allies in Africa and by Russia and Cuba — has been pushing for stronger resolutions on “defamation” since a global controversy arose two years ago over cartoons in a Danish newspaper which Muslims say insult their religion.

The “defamation” issue has become especially sensitive this year as the U.N. prepares to celebrate in the autumn the 50th anniversary of the 1948 Universal Declaration, long seen as the bedrock of international human rights law and practice.
* And that’s silly, as it implies not being offended or insulted is a human right, making a mockery of a document designed to protect against the most grievous acts of violence and discrimination, many of which happen to be enshrined in Sharia law.

The OIC has been actively promoting its own 1990 Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam, which it argues is complementary to the Universal Declaration but which critics like the IHEU say negate it in many areas.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia’s prime minister warned the opposition on Wednesday against provoking racial tensions after it announced plans to undo a controversial affirmative-action program.

The three-party opposition alliance has said it would dismantle the New Economic Policy (NEP) — which gives majority Malays preference for almost everything from jobs and housing to government contracts, educational opportunities and stocks — saying it breeds cronyism and corruption.

Lim Guan Eng of the Chinese-backed Democratic Action Party (DAP), heading the new government in the industrial state of Penang, said after he was sworn into office on Tuesday that he would scrap the NEP in Malaysia’s only Chinese-majority state.

“The (Penang) state government must not try to create an atmosphere which can cause racial tensions,” national news agency Bernama quoted Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as saying.

* What Abdullah is saying is this: Malaysia is Dar-al Islam and you are dhimmi’s. Pay the jiziyah with willing submission and don’t make any wind, otherwise….

Catholic Clergy Threatened by Muslim Militants in Philippines

Manila, Mar 12, 2008 (CNA).- Bishops, priests, and religious on the island of Jolo in the Philippines are now under military protection following a series of murders and kidnappings committed by Muslim militants targeting Church personnel, Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) reports.

Bishop Angelito Lampon, the Apostolic Vicar of Jolo, spoke to ACN about conditions on Jolo, an island in the Sulu Archipelago in the southwest Philippines.

Bishop Lampon said that he had to build a guardhouse in front of the gate of his episcopal residence because of the security concerns. He cited the murder of Father Rey Roda, who was shot dead by armed Muslim men this past January, as an example of the worsening security situation.

The islands of Jolo and Basilan are considered strongholds of the Abu Sayaff (Bearers of the Sword) guerillas, an Islamic jihadist group that the international community and the Filipino people consider to be terrorists

Though there are sometimes serious acts of violence, there are also many minor daily acts of hostility. Bishop Lampon said that a Muslim mother might sweep her yard, but dump the rubbish in front of the door of her Christian neighbor. The bishop also related how he has been abused and spat upon in the street when he was in clerical dress.
