Others have dissected the various crazy responses to Emily Yoffe’s piece warning women against binge drinking. The strange one that keeps coming up is “teaching men not to rape”.
We don’t talk about teaching murderers not to kill. Or teaching muggers not to mug.
It’s generally understood that there is a criminal ecology out there that will do nasty things to you, whose members can be locked up, but who probably won’t be reformed. Even the sorts of liberals who write essays like this don’t tend to urge teaching men not to kill.
That would be… well… stupid. But stupid is ubiquitous.
So, is telling women to stop being so drunk really the best advice you can give people to prevent rape? It’s like telling people not to drive late at night because they might die at the hands of a drunk driver — these people aren’t breaking the law, yet they’re the ones being targeted and asked to compromise their lives. What about teaching men not to rape?
Teaching people not to drive through the ghetto at night is actually pretty good advice for avoiding carjackings.
Liberals seem to have a pretty poor grasp of the difference between the real and the ideal. In terms of strict ideology, we should not accept a world where anyone has to restrict their freedom to avoid being carjacked. And maybe that’s a courageous position… if anyone wants to take it. In the real world, you’ll end up carjacked.
Giving potential victims advice is actually good advice.
“If rapists would stop raping people, campus alcohol culture wouldn’t lead to sexual violence,” another person added.

ASIO’s report to Parliament last week exploded some sweet lies we’ve been told about our immigration program.
Here’s one: immigration brings only good things, like falafel.
Here’s another: there’s still only a “tiny, unrepresentative minority” of Muslim extremists here. A “handful”.
Handful? Check the ASIO report: “This year ASIO . . . investigated several hundred mostly Australia-based individuals who are advocates of a violent Islamist ideology.”
In fact, we already have 20 Muslims jailed for terrorism-related offences and ASIO fears more may come: “There has been an increase in Australians travelling overseas to participate in terrorist training or engage in foreign disputes – Syria is the primary destination.
“The concern is . . . the likelihood of radicalised Australians returning home with an increased commitment and capability to pursue violent acts on our shores.”
Indeed, the Syrian civil war has already “created domestic tensions . . . partly because of deep familial ties to Lebanon that exist here”, with “sporadic incidents of small-scale communal violence in Australia”.
Nor is the danger just from the 80 or so Australian Muslims fighting in Syria, or others who’ve trained or fought in Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen. There are also the ticking bombs at home, fired up by messages pumped into their homes over the internet.
“The threat of homegrown terrorism is of significant concern,” says ASIO, citing the Boston Marathon bombings and the London jihadists who slaughtered a British soldier. “In Australia, there are individuals and small groups who believe an attack here is justified.”

The dhimmimay not ride an elegant horse or mule; he may ride a donkey only if the saddle[-work] is of wood. He may not walk on the good part of the road. They [the dhimmis] have to wear [an identifying] patch [on their clothing], even women, and even in the [public] baths…[dhimmis] must hold their tongue…. 4 (Emphasis added.)
