Libya’s Coast Guard Intercepts 64 Europe-Bound Migrants, Days After a Deadly Shipwreck

CAIRO (AP) – Libya’s coast guard intercepted dozens of Europe-bound migrants on a boat and returned them to shore, authorities said Saturday, a few days after a shipwreck off the North African country left nearly two dozen dead or missing.

The boat was carrying 64 migrants and was intercepted Friday off the northwestern town of Sirte, according to the town’s coast guard unit. It posted images on Facebook showing dozens of migrants, including at least one woman and a child, upon their return. The coast guard also set the migrant boat on fire, a procedure aimed at preventing its reuse by traffickers.

On Wednesday, a boat carrying 32 migrants from Egypt and Syria capsized off Libya’s eastern town of Tobruk, leaving 22 missing and presumed dead. The Libyan coast guard said it rescued nine people and recovered one body.

Surveillance State: Tony Blair and Ex-Tory Leader Call for Chinese Communist-Style Digital ID

Blair was not alone in calling for new restrictions on social media. Earlier this week, the left-wing Speaker of the House Sir Lindsay Hoyle also said that the government should consider new limits against online speech.

“Misinformation is dangerous,” Hoyle said. “Social media is good but its also bad when people are using it in a way that could cause a riot, threat, intimidation, suggesting that we should attack somebody, it’s not acceptable.

“What we’ve got to do is factually correct what’s up there, if not I think the government has to think long and hard about what they are going to do about social media and what are they going to put through parliament as a bill.

“I believe it should be across, it doesn’t matter what country you are in, the fact is that misinformation is dangerous and no misinformation, or threats, or intimidation should be allowed to be carried out on social media platforms.”

Responding to Hoyle’s comments, the Free Speech Union wrote that it is “concerning to hear the Speaker of the Commons lumping ‘misinformation’ in with ‘incitement, threats and intimidation’ while talking up the need for greater cross-border censorship. Given that all statements of fact or opinion are provisional, who gets to define ‘misinformation’, and when?”

If the European Union forces Hungary to admit illegal migrants, Hungary will offer free transport to Brussels after completing the EU legal procedures – declared Parliamentary State Secretary Bence Rétvári during a press conference.

He emphasized that Hungary, by securing its southern border, is also protecting the EU’s external borders. Since 2015, Hungarian police and border patrols have prevented one million illegal border crossing attempts. Despite this, the European Court of Justice has imposed an “unjust and gigantic” fine on Hungary, pressuring the country to change its migration policy. In response to the EU’s pressure, Mr. Rétvári reiterated Hungary’s stance, stating that if forced to allow migrants, Hungary will transport them to Brussels.

He responded to the Brussels mayor’s concerns that such a move would disrupt daily life there, by pointing out that Hungary secures its borders to avoid similar disruptions for its own citizens. He criticized the EU for attacking rather than compensating Hungary for its border protection efforts.

Request for LGBTQ Conference in the Hungarian Parliament was Denied

Leftist opposition parties Democratic Coalition (DK), the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP), Momentum and Párbeszéd requested to hold a conference on the situation of the “LGBTQ community” in the Parliament on September 3.

The speaker of the House, Kövér László denied this request. David Pressman, the U.S. Ambassador to Budapest, expressed concern following the speaker’s denial, stating that it “raises serious and concerning questions.”
