Few New Yorkers legally own guns. The NYPD has issued around 40,000 handgun permits in a city of over 8 million. That’s around one handgun for every two-hundred New Yorkers.

Don’t assume that the parts of the city with the most guns are the most dangerous.

The vast majority of handgun permits are in Staten Island, which has the lowest crime rate in the city, as opposed to the Bronx, with the highest. Manhattan has few legal guns relative to its population while the white working class areas of Brooklyn have some of the most legal guns.

The pandemic years has seen Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan frequently use inappropriate and often dehumanising language against the citizens of WA.

‘Regardless of this, McGowan publicly stated that the unvaccinated are ‘demented, deranged, wacky, nutty, dangerous’ individuals who ‘need to grow a brain’.

Is this the way the most powerful person in the state should be speaking about the most powerless persons under his control?

Western Australia’s Premier, Mark McGowan, recently launched a war of words on Peter Dutton after being asked by the media about his leadership aspirations. At the time, Dutton had been selected for the Liberal Party leadership after Scott Morrison confirmed he would resign following his government’s election loss. 

McGowan said the former Defence Minister was an ‘extremist’ who does not fit with ‘modern Australia’. He also said:

‘[Dutton] doesn’t seem to listen and he’s extremely conservative. I actually don’t think he’s that smart. I don’t pick up that Peter Dutton is fit to be Prime Minister’.

This is one of the most disgraceful things a state leader has said about a high-ranking member of Federal Parliament. However, this is not the first time McGowan has made similar outbursts. 

Consider for instance what the WA Premier said on January 6: ‘If you’re asked to show your proof of [Covid] vaccination, don’t be a dropkick’. Dropkick is Australian slang for a stupid or worthless person.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet praised China’s “tremendous achievements” in human rights this weekend and claimed that the Communist Party has “dismantled” all of its concentration camps in the Uyghur region of East Turkistan, concluding her visit to the region.

Bachelet used the Chinese Communist Party’s preferred euphemism for the concentration camps, “Vocational Education and Training Centers” (VETC), and claimed that Party officials allowed her to visit what is now the “Kashgar Experimental School,” an alleged former camp. In her remarks on Saturday as she concluded the trip to China, Bachelet emphasized that her visit was “not an investigation” and that she had traveled to China for exchanges with Party officials to “listen to each other, raise concerns, explore and pave the way for more regular, meaningful interactions in the future.”
