In reality, the history of jihad is full of periods of advance and periods of stasis, with a very small number of retreats or losses (Spain, Israel, India). The jihad didn’t arise in modern times and won’t go away in modern times. Even if Trofimov were correct that it is in decline in our day, which requires ignoring a great deal of jihad activity, it would recur eventually, because contrary to Trofimov’s assumptions, and those of everyone he quotes in this article, jihad doesn’t arise from various geopolitical conditions, but from the teachings of Islam which always remain there to be taken up by Muslims who may have hitherto paid them scant attention.
