A Flying Pig Moment: French PM Remembers…Cyprus!
“It is not possible that a country could want to join the European Union while its army is occupying the territory of another EU country”
So says French Prime Minister Francois Fillon. But actually it is quite possible that a country could want to join the European Union while its army is occupying the territory of another EU country. And it is also possible, although Fillon has suddenly “recalled” this, that the EU, cowed, defensive, lacking any sense of itself, supine and already half-dhimmified, will agree.
“Turkey: Fillon Recalls French Reasons For ‘No’ To Accession,”
NICOSIA, MAY 9 - French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, on a work visit in Cyprus, recalled today that his country opposes the accession of Turkey to the EU mainly due to the occupation by the Turkish army of the northern part of the island. The French prime minister told a joint news conference with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias that “it is not possible that a country could want to join the European Union while its army is occupying the territory of another EU country”. “The accession of Turkey to the EU is not a good solution,” Fillon said adding that “still today there are many obstacles for similar accession. A privileged partnership between the EU and this large country Turkey is a necessary stage”. Christofias said he was hoping for a “bi zonal and bi communal” solution to the question of Cyprus, divided since the summer of 1974 after a Turkish military invasion which followed a failed coup made by Greek Cypriot nationalists willing to annex the island to Greece. Fillon arrived this morning in Nicosia for a 24-hour visit under the preparation for the term of French presidency of the EU which starts on July 1, 2008.

Cyprus: MP stresses need to combat Islamophobia
18-04-2008
Cyprus Mail:
AKEL deputy Andros Kyprianou, head of the Cyprus delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, has called on European governments to address growing Islamophobia faced by Muslim communities face in Europe.
Addressing the Assembly, Kyprianou noted a marked increase in this “dangerous phenomenon” recently and stressed the need to investigate the reasons that lead to such “unacceptable behaviour.”
“Several terrorist attacks in Europe over the past few years have opened Pandora’s Box and have created a so-called Islamophobia,” Kyprianou said.
This, he continued, “means that Islam in many people’s mind is linked with the religion of Muslim terrorists, something which is wrong.”
* Read the Koran and the hadith, asshole!
Kyprianou pointed out that it is of crucial importance for European governments to ensure that immigrants participate in the life of the country they are residing to be part of society and not feel marginalised.
“It is our duty to clarify that the religion of Islam has nothing to do with Muslim terrorists,” he said, and added that “the member states of the Council of Europe have to act rapidly and effectively in order to combat all forms of discrimination and especially the dangerous phenomenon of Islamophobia.”
