Lee Kuan Yew: Muslim integration in Singapore is failing…

He said it.

“We can integrate all religions and races except Islam.”

Fartwa worthy. Watch the soldiers of Allah throw hissy fits from the Straights of Singapore to Timbuktu. And he didn’t even want to offend:

In the book, Mr Lee, when asked to assess the progress of multiracialism in Singapore, said: “I have to speak candidly to be of value, but I do not wish to offend the Muslim community.

The Straits Times on the claim by Lee Kuan Yew, published in his new bookHard Truths to Keep Singapore Going, that Muslim integration in Singapore is failing:

MM’s [Minister Mentor’s] remarks on integration draw flak

Mr Lee, when asked to assess the progress of multiracialism in Singapore, said: “I have to speak candidly to be of value, but I do not wish to offend the Muslim community.

“I think we were progressing very nicely until the surge of Islam came, and if you asked me for my observations, the other communities have easier integration – friends, intermarriages and so on, Indians with Chinese, Chinese with Indians – than Muslims. That’s the result of the surge from the Arab states.”

He added: “I would say today, we can integrate all religions and races except Islam.”

He also said: “I think the Muslims socially do not cause any trouble, but they are distinct and separate.”

Mr lee then went on to speak of how his own generation of politicians who worked with him had integrated well, including sitting down and eating together. He said: “But now, you go to schools with Malay and Chinese, there’s a halal and non-halal segment and so too, the universities. And they tend to sit separately so as not to be contaminated. All that becomes a social divide.”

He added that the result was a “veil” across peoples. Asked what Muslims in Singapore needed to do to integrate, he replied: “Be less strict on Islamic observances and say ‘Okay, I’ll eat with you.’”

Right-wing Malay rights group Perkasa slammed Mr Lee, saying he seemed to be adapting the same tactic as non-Muslim opposition leaders in Malaysia who raised sensitive issues without bothering about Muslim sensitivities.

Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali said: “Perkasa does not consider Lee Kuan Yew as being less able to respect other religions, but instead consider him a very senile old man.”

A reader on the Jakarta Globe website wrote [on Lee’s comments]: “Funny, if you say the same thing in Europe, you will be crucified. At least somebody who is calling a cat a cat.”

  2. So disrespectful , saying he is senile..What he did in Singapore , no one else has done anywhere in the world and at the time he took Singapore out of ”Malaysia” as it was then , everyone said that he would not succeed.

  3. Decency, common sense, integrity.
This man is an excellent guide for his people.
Enoch Powell was such a person.
There are very, very few others.

  4. Islam does not go anywhere to integrate it goes to dominate. Read the Koran its all in there and as its the “actual and UNALTERABLE word of allah” according to Mohammedans there is no way to change or reform it as moonbats love to think they can. BTW anyone ever seen the “moderate’ Koran these so called ‘moderate’ Mohammedans read?

  5. Lee Kuan Yew told it as it is. I had a muslim neighbour for more than 15 years and I’ve watched the length of the tudung (of the wife) growing over the years from first ending at below the neck to now which practically reaches the ankles. And i’ve been politely told by her recently that she can no longer shake hands with men other than her family members unless she’s got a glove on. Other than that, we get along fine and I think that malay muslims need to remember their identity and be selective on what ideals or practices of Islam to import from the Arabs.

  6. Muslims and their mindless ideology are inimical to every (even their own) society that they infest. The sooner our politicians or in particular the ones in the wings realise this the better. But remember once the Islamists become the controlliing members of a governent they become a bigger and legitimate target. Stateless terrorists have been able to hide behind this fact. Like Hezbollah in Lebanon the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt will become legitimate targets. Ofcourse these morons are spoiling for a fight, it will be sadly, mushroom clouds over certain arab and persian cities and they will only have themselves to blame.

  7. He is what you call ”a ‘watchman”..like Churchill in his time…Most other leaders are blind and some are blind drunk. Why is it we always find out years later that our leaders were sloshed when they were making important decisions? At least two of our recent Prime Ministers had serious drinking problems.

  8. “Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali said: “Perkasa does not consider Lee Kuan Yew as being less able to respect other religions, but instead consider him a very senile old man.””

This statement shows the arrogance and mindset of muslims. While I do not like LKY or his family, they did a great deal that was positive. LKY’s comments are accurate – Ali on the other hand behaves like a snot-nosed muslim.

  9. Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali said: “Perkasa does not consider Lee Kuan Yew as being less able to respect other religions, but instead consider him a very senile old man.”

A senile Lee Kuan Yew is still far more intelligent then a Muslim.

  10. Lee Kuan Yew is right and people know it, I’m married in a very nice Muslim family (I’m NOT a Muslim) they are very nice people who dress normally, pray and get on great with their fellow non Muslim neighbours BUT those more hard line believers simply refuse to integrate, its simply against their ideals and a issue that’s causing more and more problems in all parts of life.

The hardline parents at my daughters school are forever trying to separate their kids from Non Muslim kids, they want differing times for their kids, its a sickening and unnerving factor we parents have to deal with while the bend over backwards school looks into every request like a love sick puppy.

  11. Judging by this older article here in the Telegraph from 20 Oct 2006 people were more outspoken and informed than now. Read the letters to the editor, you rarely find this kind of comments today. Does that mean people have given up or is the enemedia just censoring everything that doesn’t fit in with the muslicultural agenda?

Muslims can never conform to our ways

  12. Hamidah,

You wrote a lot of arrogant drivel that shows me that you are an Islamic supremacist and impervious to reason.

“By the way, I’m a Singaporean Muslim. I live there. I know the situation. You don’t and neither it seems, Lee Kuan Yew.”

Only a muslim or an imbecile would make such a claim about the former PM of Singapore.

You don’t know what I know about the situation in Singapore.

But don’t worry: I know that it is typical muslim behavior to boast that only muslims can understand Islam (or anything else for that matter)

“I would have filled pages upon pages with what are irreproachable facts.”

You have written a lot of hair raising rubbish, not facts.

I am a scholar of Islam. You make me laugh!

  13. Hamidah,
Know Singapore, know Singaporeans, You and your islamic tripe are merely tolerated and the people suffer your presence by being very very patient. This will change when you scum overstep the limits – which you will. NOw bugger of.

  14. Hamidah,
LKW retracted his claim under extreme political pressure – he said the truth – muslims do NOT integrate. A faeces is still a shit even if you form it into a rose – in the same way islamists are murderous cowards even if they wear suits! Again I reiterate the last sentence of the last post – B.OFF!!

  15. Folks,
Read the advertising that hamidah sent to us. I suggest you all do the same and then think about how close this rosy picture that hamidah paints fits wit h the reality of muslim behavior, in all places where they have invaded. I think the match is very poor, and I find it amusing that things like hamidah’s have to lie so obviously in order to jusify their “religion”. And once again hamida B.OFF!!!

  16. oh, the irony.

Does anyone know why singapore was created? Whilst the independence of the malay peninsula was occurring, the non-muslim asians in the area didn’t want to have anything to do with the malay muslims. So the singaporeans said that we’ll create our own country. And you guys worry about your Malaysia (aka islamic hellhole).

  17. Here’s a good one, Hamidah:

    * Let’s observe the teachings of Islam on how Muslims should treat their neighbours.

Here’s a few suggestions from allah (inch allah)

[5.51] O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

[8.12] When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.

[8.39] And fight with them until there is no more persecution and religion should be only for Allah; but if they desist, then surely Allah sees what they do.

[9.5] So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

9.29] Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Apostle have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.

    * muslims – the neighbours from Hell?

  18. The Ruling Party declares that it does not want religious strife to occur in Singapore and has drummed this into the citizenry for almost 50 years. Why does a core member of the Ruling Party now decide to relax this habit of careful avoidance for offense and start spouting opinions about how Muslims should live? For decades all the communities of the different religions here live in peace, why does this important member of the ruling party, in fact the founding father of Singapore, now decide to dice with fire. It may be because he has found the Malay Muslim community docile, especially those working in MUIS very compliant, rubber stamping the Ruling Party’s every whim. So he decides to shortcut the process and say it himself to the Malay Muslims directly. The gist of what he wants is that Malay Muslims in Singapore should water down their Islam! I wonder whether this man who is supposed to be so erudite knows that in World Islam itself there is ongoing efforts by its jurists and scholars to determine best practices or sunnah as encapsulated in the Holy Qur’an and Hadiths. It would be hilarious if not downright insulting for a non Muslim like him , no matter how eminent to take part in discovering the sunnah. But he foolishly attempted to shape the sunnah. This I think is the groteque incongruity that provoke the Muslims in Singapore to anger.

  19. Doesn’t take much to provoke muslims to anger, in Singapore or anywhere on God’s earth.

  20. Is there anything that doesn’t cause offence to the soldiers of allah?

Haven’t the Malay Muslims already got Malaysia where they can live their “ongoing efforts by its jurists and scholars to determine best practices or sunnah as encapsulated in the unholy Qur’an and Hadiths?”

The fact is that wherever the soldiers of allah have settled (behind what they believe to be enemy lines) they have never managed to create anything but disaster and destruction.

Why should Singapore allow them to practice their ‘unwatered’ Islam when its against the interests of its citizens?

  21. Best thing Singapore did was to secede from Malaysia almost as soon as it was formed.

  22. payalebar,
probably because Singaporean intelligence services may have detected a significant threat from the muslim community. And since muslims seems to be incapable for modifying their behaviour to live with others as equals, then it is about tíme someone else did it for them. If you have a problem with this I suggest you keep it to yourself.

  23. Agree with Kaw/Mullah/Jzaik and Sheik Yermami,
I will be very honest here, I work in the recruitment industry. Would you like to know who are the annoying candidates ? You got it, the Malay Muslims! They lie when they say they will turn up for an interview, they do not turn up for work, they are completely unreliable, irresponsible and seem only to like lazing around!

Sad to say, they have given me huge headaches for more than 10 years. Its not about the age, young or old, its the same, its about not honoring your word! Disgusting!! Can someone enlighten me – whats the psyche all about ? All talk and no action!

And oh yes, full of drama – no money to go to work, have to attend to some sick person/some funeral or some wedding, at the expense of work – where are your values and good ethics ? Down the toilet bowl, sigh!!!

    Anything constructive to add ?

  24. Wham,
your completely correct, I have similar issues dealing them the same lot both sides of the causeway, worse is trying to enact commercial contracts with them.

The have to sleep curled up you know, … cause they cant lie straight in bed!

Avoid at all cost is the advice I give.

  25. hey! theresaj,

Of course you side that old senile man!! because he talk nice words of your religion and races!! what if he did the same to you and your religion as he did to us? how do you feel then? wake up!! malay lives singapore before chinese or indian! FYI malay is the one who mainly support him elections to be independence from malaysia! if not because of malay, you think singapore lives harmony? your neibhours country are also malay too??

  26. Wow so much ignorant and double-standard bigots commenting here. It just show how far these people go in life.. probably just to their kitchen or their bar. I bet none of you get to mingle with any good hardworking malays like alone a muslim. Kids, the world is a big surface area, you have lots of people from all walks of life. An example, just because a hick or a redneck inbreds and form his family, does that mean all caucasians follow such disgusting acts? Or If a white supremacist christian who is intolerant to other religion or race, does that represents all christians in the world? Terrorism is not only down to Islamic radicalist though the media tends to focus more on the bad side of islam than any other organizations that are occuring. Only a child would blindly eat whatever the media protrays like a candy without deciding something with their own mind or having SOLID research.
Anways, its not surprising that a malay – whether good or bad, would be written off straight away, stereotyped and faced by double standards in any industry by racist bigots who CHOOSES to blind their own race. Ive come across aplenty of useless and lazy chinese or ahbengs but no one would say a thing. The advantage of such inception is, you have someone like LKY who support these sort of ignorant views thus increasing one’s superiority complex attitude, you have the control of the media who love to potray the bad side of the malay/muslims community while potraying blitz, glamour and the rich lifestyle of the successful chinese. Plus, you have 3+ million population of the same race. C’mon 10 dumb chinese is nothing compared to 10 dumb malays or indian for that matter, the majority will win by ratio. Think about it. Futhermore, I find it very ironic when a malay/muslim who do try to put aside his religion and tries his/her best to mingle, YET they are still accused of being hypocrites and are representing the muslims in a bad light by racist bigots (whatever their race is). All in all, the malays shouldnt be disheartened and should not let the bigots win by letting them step on their heads. Stand up, brush it off, walk tall and live your life to fullest.

  27. Btw:

    Threats and intimidation:

John Howard also told us that Muslims fail to integrate:

Aussie PM won’t apologize for telling Muslims they should adopt Australian values

At last: a non-Muslim political leader with some courage and common sense. It is telling that in stating what everyone would have taken for granted up to about a generation ago, Howard has insulted the Muslims in Australia. Anti-dhimmitude from John Howard: “PM stands by Muslim converts,” from AP, with thanks to JE:

Prime Minister John Howard says he has no need to apologise for telling Muslims they need to embrace Australian values.
Mr Howard sparked controversy yesterday by saying on talk-back radio a small group of Muslim migrants had refused to accept their adopted country’s values and had not learned English.

He told Macquarie Radio Australia had benefited greatly from immigration, but “there is a section, a small section, of the Islamic population … which is very resistant to integration”.

“What I want to do is to reinforce the need for everybody who comes to this country to fully integrate,” Mr Howard said yesterday. “Fully integrating means accepting Australian values, it means learning as rapidly as you can the English language if you don’t already speak it.

“And it means understanding that in certain areas, such as the equality of men and women, the societies that some people have left were not as contemporary and as progressive as ours.

“People who come from societies where women are treated in an inferior fashion have got to learn very quickly that that is not the case in Australia.”…

The prime minister’s comments sparked fury among some Muslim leaders who say they were offended by what the prime minister had said.

The chairman of the government’s new Islamic advisory committee, Dr Ameer Ali, has warned of more trouble unless Mr Howard tones down his rhetoric on Muslim migrants.

    “We can’t guarantee your safety”-

“We have already witnessed one incident in Sydney recently in
Cronulla, I don’t want these scenes to be repeated because when you antagonise the younger generation, younger group, they are bound to react,
” Dr Ali told Macquarie Radio.

Don’t tell Muslims they must integrate, or they will attack you.

But Mr Howard today stood by his comments.
“I don’t apologise,” he told reporters.”I think they are missing the point and the point is that I don’t care and the Australian people don’t care where people come from.

“There’s a small section of the Islamic population which is unwilling to integrate and I have said generally all migrants … they have to integrate.”…

“And I have said, generally, all migrants … they have to integrate, and that means speaking English as quickly as possible, it means embracing Australian values and it also means making sure that no matter what the culture of the country from which they come might have been, Australia requires women to be treated fairly and equally and in the same fashion as men.

“And if any migrants that come into this country have a different view, they better get rid of that view very quickly. I don’t retreat in any way from that. It doesn’t involve singling out a group.”

    1. The interesting part is that both Lee Kuan Yew and John Howard said the same thing, and both were threatened for saying it.

Wake me up when this nightmare is over!

  28. if we only read the papers and only watch the news on tv, chances are we’re going to fall for anything anyone says. i am born muslim, but for the past 27 years of my life, have only practiced islam since 3 years ago. why have i come to submit n love islam n practice it? because i didnt understand islam. all de restrictions and rules that turns people off, are really what people invented. religion, is simple. and there is more good from it then not. i learned a lot from CONVERTS over blogs n youtube videos…n embraced islam from hearing their stories and doing my own RESEARCH. i thank God for the internet. YOU have the tool. its your responsibility to find the truth. bear in mind tho, ISLAM is perfect, but Muslims are not. any human being is IMPERFECT. because only God is perfect. so, we learn to be patient, to not pass judgments, to understand, to be compassionate, to accept others, and to keep learning.
oh, and this has nothing to do with tryinna be Arabs. do your research.

  29. * do your research

    Ramadan, for example:

[16Let no one therefore judge you in eating, or in drinking, or with respect to a feast day or a new moon or a Sabbath day, 17which are a shadow of the things to come; but the body is Christ’s. 18Let no one rob you of your prize by a voluntary humility and worshipping of the angels, dwelling in the things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19and not holding firmly to the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and ligaments, grows with God’s growth.

20If you died with Christ from the elements of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to ordinances, 21″Don’t handle, nor taste, nor touch” 22(all of which perish with use), according to the precepts and doctrines of men? 23Which things indeed appear like wisdom in self-imposed worship, and humility, and severity to the body; but aren’t of any value against the indulgence of the flesh.] – Colossians 2 – Holy Bible (in part)

Do your research, dayana – do not exchange the Truth for the lies of allah and its false prophet. They traffic in human souls, deceiving them.

  30. all the comments given trying to condemn malyas are utterly dispicable. come on. its not about our religion here is the problem its just each and every individual who chooses whether or not to be totally trur to whatever religion they choose. like most will say and its really a common phrase, NO ONE IS PERFECT, EVERYONE WILL BOUND TO MAKE MISTAKES. and the whole point here is do not condemn each other be it the malay who are both not fully religiously islamic and those who are, for chinese you choose to be free thinkers, buddist or christians but for sure not all really are as faithful to each of their own realigion, and not to forget there are also people who follow the paths of the satan, religion is not to be blame but the individuals who choose to do or not to do the right or wrong way, its just boils down back to the roots of every human beings of how they are being brought up. if u sterotype it too much it will cause spark between all even a chinese can fight with a chinese, a malay can fight with a malay, an indian can fight with an indian and so on and so forth. so come on lets see, we all have our own differences and goals in the end in life, we choose whether to succeed or fall in live as in the end we lived only once and when we die, the ONE will judge what values have you instill in the soul of your body. remember afterall we are creating only as souls abd given a body to have a chance to fill the real world and what do you cultivate. we have to help one another in order to grow just like it will be in your own family. Will you discriminate your love ones of their wrong doings? instead you correct them and pull then back up to be a better person. and arent we being taught to respect one other irregardless of whatever the situation is, be it work, family, one’s religion. so please stop trying to push each other down the drain but instead hold hands and walk the path together to succeed.

  31. Shocker: Muslims investigate ‘religious tensions’ in Malaysia, and it’s all the fault of the treacherous infidels

Recent events in Malaysia — i.e. various outrages and provocations committed by Muslims officially or non-officially towards non Muslims — have, as is often delicately put, ‘raised tensions’ between Malaysian Muslims and its various non Muslim minorities. More specifically, these recent events have exposed the fiction that Malaysia is one ‘harmonious’ multi-ethnic and multi-religious society as being more phony than ever.

The Official Malaysian-Muslim Establishment has responded in two ways: first, by promising an ‘investigation’ into biggest recent outrage, namely the recent inspection of a church by the Islamic religious police (which may or may not involve or talk to the ‘infidels’ who actually own the church that was raided in the first place), and secondly, a propaganda offensive via the vetted government-approved mainstream media. The best and brightest of the Malays are on the case, and what one of them has to say may surprise you. Or perhaps not. From “Forging unity through religion”, by Dr. Chandra Muzaffar, The Star, 24 August 2011:
Universal values shared by all religions should be the fount of unity in a multi-religious society.

Is religion in multi-religious Malaysia a force for unity or disunity? This is an important question to ask at this juncture since religion has assumed tremendous significance in the public arena in recent times.

In the first decade and a half of our independence, religion was not perceived as a hindrance to national unity. The Constitution recognised Islam as the religion of the Federation.

It was an affirmation of the identity of the new nation which had evolved from Muslim Sultanates. If this identity was not acknowledged, the Malay-Muslim populace would have felt that the Malaysian state had not taken cognisance of their identity as a people.

Of course, then as now, violence would have resulted, and does result, whenever the Malay-Muslims feel that their Islamic identity is in any way infringed or ‘threatened’. And it doesn’t take much for that to happen — all a Christian has to do is say ‘Allah’ a few times, and before you know it, churches start going up in flames. But I digress.
However, the relatively tension free coexistence among the majority and minority religious communities of the first 15 years, began to witness some strains from the 1980s onwards.

This is about the same time that a certain infamous Malaysian, terrorist apologist and notorious anti Semite named Mahathir Mohamad became Prime Minister. Coincidence?

Often, in situations like this where interaction gives rise to friction, segments within a religious community become more conscious of religious boundaries. Any breach of what is sometimes an artificially constructed boundary arouses passions and heightens tensions.
Yup, that ‘friction’ just mysteriously arises. Passions get ‘aroused’. Never mind which religious group that is always getting riled up and ‘aroused’ in the first place.

There will be no solution to controversies such as child conversion as long as one accords primacy to religious injunctions that have developed over time rather than the perennial values and principles of the Quran.
Which Quranic values is our wise Doctor referring to? The slaying of infidels wherever they are found? The beating of women? Does he mean those values?

Anyway, the good Doctor soon dispenses with his monkeyshine and warms to his main theme — all these ‘religious tensions’ that keep arising between Muslims and everyone else in Malaysia are not the fault of Muslims at all.
If a certain mindset within a segment of the Muslim population is a barrier to national unity, so is a certain movement within the growing Christian community. Evangelical Christians determined to spread Christianity are becoming more zealous.

Non-Muslim communities are their main targets in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak. But there is increasing evidence to suggest that Malays are also being approached in spite of the constitutional provision that restricts “the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam.”

Of course! Muslims reserve the right to proselytize to everybody everywhere (which in this country is funded by infidels), but the Evangelical Christians dare to demand the same? Outrageous! Religious freedom for us, for not for unbelievers — our religion forbids it. To a Muslim, the Golden Rule is apparently for suckers.

The evangelical push in Malaysia and other parts of the world has a lot to do with the rise of what is broadly described as the Christian Right in the United States.
For the Christian Right exporting their brand of the religion serves to strengthen the global hegemonic power of the US.

When in doubt, blame America, and you’re never wrong.
As Iain Buchannan shows in his superb academic study of this movement entitled “The Armies of God”, converting Muslims to Christianity is one of the evangelist’s cherished goals.

Since Muslims worldwide have always resisted conversion, the tactics employed are more subtle and sophisticated.

Many Christian groups in Malaysia and other countries are opposed to this sort of evangelism.

Christians dare to convert Muslims using peaceful methods? How culturally insensitive! But let’s hope this Buchannan fellow is correct. And speaking of conversion, if Muslims are so resistant to it, as the author claims, then why are Muslims and Muslim governments everywhere so touchy about ‘protecting Muslims’ from ‘corrupt infidel beliefs’? After all, that’s why the Malaysian government banned Muslims from practicing yoga a few years ago. As for the local Christians, they apparently meet with the Doctor’s approval for being tame and truly dhimmified.

They know that it is not only a betrayal of the essence of Jesus’ message of love, compassion and justice but also inimical to harmonious relations among different religious communities. They emphasise universal values shared by Christianity, Islam and other religions.

It is these shared values that should be the fount of unity in a multi-religious society.

They underscore our common humanity. If religions through the deeds of their adherents bring forth our common humanity, they will help forge unity in this land that we call our home.

    > Dr Chandra Muzaffar is chairman of the board of trustees, Yayasan 1Malaysia and Professor of Global Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia.
This Muslim has the unbelievable chutzpah to tell evangelical Christians — and all Christians, really — that they misunderstand Jesus’ message. Apparently, to this so-called doctor, the only ‘real’ Christians are the ones that meekly submit to church ‘inspections’, second class status, and the overriding agenda of Islamic supremacy.

If this taqiyya master ‘doctor’ Muzaffar wants ‘unity’, then the only unity he plainly seeks is the kind with a distinctly Islamic hue.

  32. well…all this is unfortunate. i have alot of muslim friends from singapore that are splendid. they do sit and eat with others although they consume smt like kosher. and they do not consume alcohol. probably lee kuan yew just encountered a small group of muslims that are different.

Also unfortunate that islamic terrorism was at its pinnacle during the digital age. im sure there were worst acts by other religious groups throughout the ages that is not as well publicized.

  33. PaulG,
You have missed the main point here – most muslims are almost certainly good people, however the problem lies with the quran and the rather violent religious dogma that can legimately be associated with it. There are many forms of muslim practise, but some follow rules which are dimetrically opposed to a free and productive coexistence with others. If the dogma of a religion can be used legimately to prosecute others, then there is a major problem with the religion and it needs revision. Islamic terrorism has also not yet reached its pinnacle – or do you have a magic crystal. And muslims are currently the world leaders in religiously inspired terror. Incidently LKWs opinion is shared by many others. I suggest you do some research on these matters.

  34. Wikileaks: Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew makes freudian slip about Islam

Lee Kuan Yew, for those who may be unaware, is the man who can be largely credited for creating the economic tiger and success story that is modern-day Singapore, an island city-state in Southeast Asia. Assuming this particular revelation from Wikileaks is accurate, it would make a great deal of sense for Lee to know ‘the score’ on Islam, as Singapore is not only an island geographically, but also an island of ‘infidels’, a nation of majority Chinese in a sea of Muslims, that survives only by staying in the good graces of its far larger and Muslim-majority neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia.

Thus Lee knows full well what he is dealing with in regards to Islam, but also he has likely internalized the ‘dhimmi code’; he knows the dangers of antagonizing Islam or Muslims too openly. It’s worth mentioning that ultra-modern city-state of Singapore has long discouraged anything which might ‘disrupt social cohesion and harmony’, which includes criticism of Islam. Perhaps Lee should be turning himself in? From “Singapore’s Lee denies calling Islam ‘venomous’”, Free Malaysia Today, September 5, 2011:
Former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew has stirred a hornets’ nest with his remarks about the religion as reported in leaked US diplomatic cables.
SINGAPORE: Singapore’s outspoken former leader Lee Kuan Yew today denied calling Islam a “venomous religion” after leaked US diplomatic cables set off a furore in the multiracial city-state.
One of hundreds of cables from the US embassy in Singapore released last week by the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks had Lee as describing Islam as a “venomous religion” in a 2005 meeting with then senator Hillary Clinton.

Danger, Islamophobia alert! Unfortunately, there is no word, however, if the listening Hillary went along with Lee’s Islamophobic notions. Without missing a beat, though, Lee issues a retraction and categorical denial in three, two, one…

“This is false,” the 87-year-old Lee, Singapore’s founding prime minister and elder statesman, said in a statement.

Lee said that he looked up a foreign ministry note of the meeting, and “nowhere does it record me describing Islam as ‘venomous’, nor did I say anything which could have given that impression”.

“I did talk about extremist terrorists like the (Southeast Asian) Jemaah Islamiyah group, and the jihadist preachers who brainwashed them. They are implacable in wanting to put down all who do not agree with them,” he said.

“So their Islam is a perverted version, which the overwhelming majority of Muslims in Singapore do not subscribe to.”

Islam is venomous because Muslims constantly plot to blow up Singaporeans and various things in Singapore? How could Lee Kuan Yew come to such a hateful conclusion?

Now Lee, having uttered the politically correct, familiar and comfortable lies that all concerned have agreed to (i.e. Islam is “the religion of peace” and jihadists have “hijacked Islam”, etc.), should be able to rest easy. Never mind the truth, but truth counts for very little in the political games of our day and age.

  35. Mohammed Nizal, It is so amusing to see that you and your fellow islamists insult God by imaging that he is a hate filled, violent creature like you, So Mohammed, if God is all-knowing and infinite, why does he need a purile, stupid, and loathsome creep like you to spread his/her/its word.? Answer – it doesn’t, which means: you are just a criminal.

  36. Human beings are not perfect, that means including all of us COMMENTORS. Even Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. He has done many great things for Singapore but he is also not perfect. Our knowledge is limited by only of what we know and its’ reliability is of only what we think is right. You’ll be surprised at how fake the whole world is …

Dont let people shape or influence your mindset…shows how shallow you are. It’s not fair to make a whole generalization of a community just because of some minority. Who’s being unfriendly here, with such ridiculous generalization?

And about the religion or Islam thingy, all religions are meant to promote peace. Do PROPER research on the religion, not mere research to back your corrupted stand.

  37. Malaysian Muslim thought police ban Lee Kwan Yew’s book that suggests that Muslims should be ‘less strict’

Lee Kwan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, should know a thing or three about Islam — he’s been living in very close proximity with Islam and its votaries for almost his entire life. Modern Singapore exists as a wealthy, advanced non-Muslim city state surrounded on all sides by a virtual sea of Islam. Singapore also has its own Muslim minority, which Lee struggled to ‘integrate’ into mainstream Singaporean (i.e. non Islamic) culture for his entire professional life. If this sounds familiar, it should. It turns out that the devout Muslims in Singapore, as well as elsewhere, do not integrate — they invariably demand, sooner or later, that the rest of infidel society adapt to them.

Lee’s solution to this dilemma, according to his own recent book “Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going”, was to urge the Muslim minority in Singapore to be, in short, less observant in their Islamic devotions. According to the mainstream, politically correct “Peaceful-Islam-has-been-hijacked-by-a-Tiny-Minority-of-Extremists” point of view, this solution will make no sense. But as Mr. Lee, at least in private, is most likely not hindered by such fanciful notions regarding Islam; he knows better, and he is telling us as much in his latest book.

That’s what makes his tome such a threat to devout believers, and why Allah’s Lifestyle and Thought Police (AKA ‘Jakim’) have quickly swung into action by banning it. From “Jakim declares book on Lee Kuan Yew haram” by Shannon Teoh, The Malaysian Insider, 8 December 2011:

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 — Federal Islamic authorities have declared haram a book in which Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew urged Muslims in Singapore to be “less strict on Islamic observances.”

Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going, a collection of interviews published in January, was included in a list of 15 books declared haram by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim).

Jakim’s planning and research division confirmed the decision was made when its committee on the censorship of publications with Islamic elements met in October.

However, both the division’s director and Jakim director general Datuk Othman Mustapha have not responded to queries by The Malaysian Insider on why the decision was made nine months after the book hit the shelves in Malaysia.

According to procedure, the list of books declared haram is sent to the home ministry for further action but it is unclear if the home ministry has followed suit and banned the books.

Othman’s predecessor Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz had said in February that Lee was unsuccessful in developing the mindset of the Singaporean public because he was “still influenced by the landscape of the 1960s which were full of prejudice and presumptions against Muslims.”

Which is the fault of non Muslims, naturally.

Lee, who served in Singapore’s Cabinet as PM, senior minister and minister mentor for 52 years before retiring in May, said in the book that Muslims in Singapore were socially “distinct and separate” and should “be less strict on Islamic observances” to aid integration and the city-state’s nation-building process.

It led to uproar from Malay and Muslims groups on both sides of the Causeway with his old rival and former Malaysian PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad accusing Lee of having no respect for religion.

By ‘having no respect for religion’, he of course only means one particular religion, and no points for figuring out which one he’s referring to.

Malaysia’s ‘moderate’ version of Islam, upon even cursory inspection, turns out to be no different from the Islam of other Islamic supremacists around the world. The desired objective of the Islamic supremacists both here in Malaysia and elsewhere remains the same — that Islam is to be an unquestioned and totalitarian cultural, political, economic, legal and military force. The means to achieve this end in Malaysia are no different than those methods employed by Islamic supremacists elsewhere — all opposition to Islam, no matter how trivial, must be silenced.

  38. The situation muslims in singapore had become from bad to worse. The wide spread discrimmination in term’s of employment. The rise of china and preference on Main land chinese over local muslims had made them as third-class citizens.Mainland chinaman in singapore will have more apportunties than muslims. The govt had taken step’s to curb it.Unfortuntely there is no law to enacted against Discrimmination. The muslims, along with minority indians have always have to face the scrouge of discrimmination
@lee kuan yew, will always be remebered for his ability and vision to transform singapore to a modern metropolis. It does not mean,he does not come with his flaws. The low birth-rate,is end process of “2 child policy” adapted by then PAP govt. Those who have more than 2 children are given hellish times for registration of child’s citizenship, enrollment of children in school. The only nation in the world with groups of MP’s competing in election. They increased from one mp to constistency to 2 to even 6 MPs.Opposition had hard time finding candidates. The muslims and indian areas are merged with chinese area’s making them minority. The HDB (housing development board) ensure that muslims and indians will always be a minority,by enacting laws that only 15% muslims and 10% indians will allowed to stay in hdb flats, the rest of them will be filled by chinese. The only country where the election boundary will keep’s on changing. The use of Internal security act to imprision poltical opponents without any trial (atleast malaysia had abolished this act) Many of the poltical opponents ike the lata JB jeyaratnam and Dr chee soon juan are made bankupt so that they would not be able particpate…………………………..

Singapore is described as “hybird regime” in Decomcratic index. His son is now PM,his son’s wife is chairman for the country’s reserve “temasek holdings”.His family occupy high places and postions, creating new elite breed.

They are living in their own Ivory towers…..The oppostion have made significant gain’s during the recent elections. We the singaporens will one day will form our own govt.We have always had no issuse with our fellow muslim brothers. The govt on many occasions had used them as scapegoat. They used to create a climate of fear .It is what u call “divide and conqure”….we know all his tricks and his lust for power. He call himself “emeritious Minister mentor”,draw’s a govt salary.though the economic and poltical climate had evolved.SINGAPORENS WILL TAKE BACK OUR LAND

    1. Yawn. Muslims can go to Malaysia or another 56 countries around the world where they can terrorize their own. Its Muslims who create a climate of fear.

Its is Muslims who play “divide and conquer”….

  39. 40. 1. The world belongs to allah, we all know that.

Why are you so insistent that you are not a Muslim?

“The muslims in singapore are different from the one’s u see in middle-east.”

Do they read a different Koran? Have they no religious obligation to follow the sharia and replace the infidel nation state?

“I must admit, I have no knowledge about islam …”

So you don’t know what you’re talking about?

“But gloriying and evil tyrant like LKY is what that pisses me off.”

      Why should I care?
