Wichman sent an e-mail to theMuslim Student’s Association.

The e-mail was in response to the students’ protest

of the Danish cartoons

that portrayed the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist.

The group had complained the cartoons were

‘hate speech.’

Enter Professor Wichman.

In his e-mail, he said the following:

Dear Moslem Association,

As a professor of Mechanical Engineering here at MSU

I intend to protest your protest.

I am offended not by cartoons,

but by more mundane things like beheadings of civilians,

cowardly attacks on public buildings, suicide murders,

murders of Catholic priests

(the latest in Turkey ),

burnings of Christian churches,

the continued persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt ,

the imposition of Sharia law on non-Muslims,

the rapes of Scandinavian girls and women

(called ‘whores’ in your culture),

the murder of film directors in Holland,

and the rioting and looting in Paris France.

This is what offends me,

a soft-spoken person and academic,

and many, many of my colleagues.

I counsel you dissatisfied, aggressive, brutal,

and uncivilized slave-trading Moslems

to be very aware of this as you proceed

with your infantile ‘protests.’

If you do not like the values of the West

– see the 1st Amendment –

you are free to leave.

I hope for God’s sake

that most of you choose that option

Please return to your ancestral homelands

and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans.

the Muslim group at the university didn’t like this too well.

They’re demanding that Wichman be reprimanded

and the university impose mandatory diversity training for faculty

and mandate a seminar on hate and discrimination for all freshmen.

Now the local chapter of CAIR has jumped into the fray.

CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations,

apparently doesn’t believe that the good professor

had the right to express his opinion.

(unlike the broad latitude given to the Islamists to spew their hate-filled raves)

For its part,

the university is standing its ground

in support of Professor Wichman,

saying the e-mail was private,

and they don’t intend to publicly condemn his remarks.

“Many brothers here and abroad – more from abroad than from here – have called to ask me about the ‘Opposite Direction’ [show on Al-Jazeera TV], and that woman [Wafa Sultan], who leveled accusations against Islam and the Muslims, and cursed Allah, His Prophet, the Islamic nation, the shari’a, and the Islamic faith and culture. She did not omit anything. She was insolent and stopped at nothing.

“I know that our colleague Dr. Faysal Al-Qassem apologized on the following show. I did not watch the [original] show, but I was given a recording. She said unbearable, ghastly things that made my hair stand on end. She had the audacity to publicly curse Allah, His Prophet, the Koran, the history of Islam, and the Islamic nation. She did not spare anything.

I’ll let you in on a little secret: any and every critic of Islamic jihad and Islamic supremacism is “ignorant.” Any Hadith that someone like Wafa Sultan (or someone like me) quotes is ipso facto unreliable, just as any Qur’an quotation she might adduce would be ripped out of context.

* Yeah! But why doesn’t Qaradhawi cite the whole verse? Why does he stop here?

Robert Spencer explains: “Other than manslaughter or spreading corruption in the land [fasaad].” That’s a big exception right there, particularly given the Islamic understanding of what constitutes fasaad. Qaradawi is quoting Qur’an 5:32, which, incidentally, immediately precedes the verse about amputation that Wafa quoted, 5:33.

Negative consequences

Continuing interruptions have a negative effect on any statement because the audience quickly becomes absorbed by the interruptions, and both speaker and audience can quickly lose track of the speaker’s argument. Worse, the speaker is often reduced to simply stating his main conclusion without being able to provide his supporting evidence. In this case, without the benefit of the quotations from the Cairo Declaration, a well-reasoned argument was reduced to sounding like mere polemics. Objections also act as a warning to others against raising sensitive issues and have a chilling effect on those who might wish to cover similar ground. No doubt all of these effects are well understood by the Islamic delegates.

More worrying still are the implications for rational discussion of Islamic interpretations of human rights. Any criticism, indeed, any discussion of Shari’ah law at the Human Rights Council is now considered an “insult to Islam”. The problem is the extremely close relationship between Islam as a religion, and Sharia which, although a system of law, holds a central position in that faith. The continuing efforts by the Islamic states at the Human Rights Council, in the UN General Assembly and elsewhere to silence “defamation” of religion can be seen in this context. Should these efforts succeed, any criticism of the Shari’ah, of its entrenched inequalities or brutal punishments will be condemned as defamation of Islam. Rational discussion – indeed any mention of the Shari’ah – will have become impossible.

For the time being, then, the Islamic States can continue to pretend that Islamic declarations of human rights are compatible with international standards. But that claim should seen for what it is.

Italy takes al Qaeda’s Pope threat seriously-agency

ROME, March 20 (Reuters) – Italian security officials are treating Osama bin Laden’s new accusations against Pope Benedict as a serious threat, Ansa news agency said on Thursday, quoting a source at the interior ministry’s anti-terrorism unit.

An interior ministry spokesman said security officials will meet on Friday to examine the Al Qaeda leader’s taped message, in which he said offending cartoons of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad were part of a “new crusade” involving Pope Benedict.

And they are worried with good reason. The Pope certainly isn’t leading a new Crusade, but Rome is nevertheless the apple of the jihadist eye. One of the most influential Muslim clerics in the world, Sheikh al-Qaradawi, said this a few years ago:

The friends of the Prophet heard that two cities would be conquered by Islam, Romiyya and Constantinople, and the Prophet said that ‘Hirqil [i.e. Constantinople] would be conquered first.’ Romiyya is Rome, the capital of Italy, and Constantinople was the capital of the state of Byzantine Rome, which today is Istanbul. He said that Hirqil which is Constantinople, would be conquered first and this is what happened…All right, Constantinople was conquered, and the second part of the prophecy remains, that is, the conquest of Romiyya. This means that Islam will return to Europe. Islam entered Europe twice and left it… Perhaps the next conquest, Allah willing, will be by means of preaching and ideology. The conquest need not necessarily be by the sword… [The conquest of Mecca] was not by the sword or by war, but by a [Hudabiyya] treaty, and by peace…
Perhaps we will conquer these lands without armies.

REFUGEES should be housed across a wider spread of suburbs to halt the so-called “white flight” from some government schools, according to a senior Federal Government MP.

* But that “white flight” link is again a misnomer, which encourages sloppy, stereotypical thinking on race. The “whites” fleeing ghettoised schools actually include many Asian children.

Laurie Ferguson, parliamentary secretary for multicultural affairs, said white flight — where Anglo-European parents shun state schools that have a high proportion of students from other racial backgrounds — had become a big challenge for multicultural Australia.

“People fear there is a monoculture in some suburbs. They believe there is an over-dominance of some cultures in schools, which is denigrating the quality of education,” Mr Ferguson told The Age.

“So they are withdrawing their kids from government schools and sending them to religious or selective high schools. This leads to further concentration of marginalised communities in government schools and the further stigmatisation of these schools.”

The term “white flight” was coined in the US. It was applied to schools after desegregation began in the 1960s, when many white people who could afford private schools pulled their children from mixed public schools.

Mr Ferguson said the “concept of white flight from the government school system” had now become a big challenge in Australia, particularly in western Sydney and parts of Melbourne.

A confidential survey conducted by the NSW Secondary Principals Council in 2006 raised concerns about white flight undermining the public education system and threatening social cohesion.

The report showed the percentage of Anglo-European students in public schools had decreased by a third in western NSW, by 42% in North Sydney and 37% in New England.

Mr Ferguson told The Age more needed to be done to avoid children from places such as Africa, who had grown up in refugee camps and had limited education, being so heavily concentrated in some areas and schools. “Deliberate policy decisions” needed to be made about diversifying the location of housing for refugees and humanitarian entrants.

He said settlement workers should also try harder to find private rental properties for their clients in a broader range of areas, rather than simply dealing with the same real estate agents.

Mr Ferguson said that in contrast to the hostility of the former Howard government, the Rudd Government was committed to making multiculturalism work, and he had been talking with the Immigration Department about how to tackle white flight.

He said while people could not be forced to live in certain areas and rent was prohibitively high in wealthy suburbs, more could be done to broaden resettlement.

“There also needs to be work from state education departments, otherwise we are going to see a worsening spiral of high unemployment, stigmatisation by employers and denigration of and further retreat from public education,” Mr Ferguson said.

The president of the Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals, Brian Burgess, said the exodus from state schools in Victoria was “more like a middle-class flight” than a white flight.

“It has more to do with middle-class people living in lower socio-economic areas moving into private education or what they would view to be a more upmarket secondary school in the next suburb,” he said.

But teachers at racially diverse schools, who asked not to be named, told The Age white flight was occurring in Melbourne.

Meanwhile, Mr Ferguson said one of his first tasks as parliamentary secretary had been to reassure the African community the Government would continue to accept African refugees, after former immigration minister Kevin Andrews claimed the Sudanese were struggling to integrate. “The biggest area of damage control was to try to counter the anxiety in the African community after Andrews’ statements,” Mr Ferguson said.

He said Africans had interpreted Mr Andrews’ “reprehensible” comments to mean the Government was completely cutting the African refugee intake.

The Immigration Department was also composing a multicultural policy statement to replace the former government’s policy.

John Howard was famously suspicious of the word “multicultural”, saying he preferred to use “integration”. He also dropped “Multicultural Affairs” from the Immigration Department’s title.

Mr Ferguson said that while it would be nice if the name was reinstated, the fact he had been appointed secretary for multicultural affairs and was pushing the agenda underlined its importance to the Government.

The call to prayer resounds across the rooftops before dawn, bringing echoes of the Levant to provincial Luton and its 30,000 Muslims. But for infidel locals, the holy wake-up is a curse. “I’d like to pull the plug on that caterwauling,” a second-generation Luton Irish woman tells me. “I go to work, and I’ve got two small kids. It’s just not fair on non-Muslim families around here.”

While nearly three out of four people in Britain claim some form of Christian affiliation, Christianity makes ever less demands on the public space. Even nativity plays are surrendering to the sensitivities of secularists and other faiths. But the impact of Britain’s estimated 1.6m Muslims is increasingly assertive. Asian Muslims account for about 1 in 50 of British citizens, yet they dominate entire districts in the vicinities of their more than 1,350 mosques: 10 of them in Luton alone. Are Muslim enclaves making a contribution to a flourishing multicultural mosaic? Or are they undermining the cohesion of Britain’s civil society?

When Archbishop Rowan Williams delivered his ratiocinations on adoption of sharia, it sent shockwaves through the nation. His initiative was emphatically rebuffed. Earlier, Michael Nazir-Ali, the Pakistani-born Anglican Bishop of Rochester, caused a rumpus by calling for an end to “‘no-go’ areas” for non-Muslims in Britain, suggesting Islam must integrate with us. He was applauded and disparaged in equal measure by faith leaders and community activists. Muslim extremists issued death threats. But where are the alleged “no-go” areas?

And how do they constitute a danger to the fabric of British society?

Of course, Justice Bernard Bongiorno is himself pre-judging that no such material would be relevant or illuminating in this case, and assuming that Islam has nothing to do with it on a priori grounds and almost certainly in defiance of the defendants’ own sentiments. But that’s not prejudice.

THE 12 defendants in Australia’s largest terrorism prosecution “are not getting a fair trial”, the judge overseeing the case has admitted.

The startling admission came as Justice Bernard Bongiorno said the conditions under which the accused are being held are so severe they could cause mental illness and jeopardise their ability to defend themselves.

In a ruling he described as “extraordinary”, Justice Bongiorno ordered the men be moved to a new prison and called for their conditions to be upgraded.

The 12 accused went on trial in Melbourne last month charged with being members of a terrorist organisation and other terror-related offences.

The trial is expected to continue until at least the end of the year, but Justice Bongiorno ordered it not resume until the men’s conditions are improved.

He warned if their conditions were not improved, he would consider releasing them on bail.

Justice Bongiorno ordered the sweeping changes after hearing medical evidence from four psychiatrists supporting the men’s claims that they could not get a fair trial if the severe conditions of their incarceration continued.

“I am satisfied that the evidence before the court establishes that the accused in this case are currently being subjected to an unfair trial,” Justice Bongiorno said.

But he added they had not been disadvantaged so far, saying the impact of the conditions would be cumulative.

It is the first time a Victorian judge has ordered that conditions for prisoners be changed.

In his ruling, Justice Bongiorno accepted the 12 men were already suffering psychiatric problems that had affected their ability to follow proceedings.

A continuation of the treatment was likely to affect their ability to defend themselves, he said.

The men have been held in the high security Acacia wing of Barwon Prison, near Geelong, since their arrest two years ago.

To attend court they must travel for up to two hours to Melbourne each day, and two hours back, shackled and handcuffed in small compartments in a prison van.

They are strip-searched when they leave Barwon and again when they return and have little time outside their cells.

Justice Bongiorno ordered the men be transferred from Barwon to the Metropolitan Assessment Prison in central Melbourne, that they be transported directly from there to court each day and that they be allowed out of their cells for 10 hours each day when not in court.

The judge also ordered that they not be shackled or subjected to any other restraining devices other than ordinary handcuffs while being transported.

He said they should not be strip-searched after returning from court and that they be treated as ordinary remand prisoners.

The men are currently classified under the highest security rating of any prisoners in Victoria.

Justice Bongiorno also ordered that Victoria’s Department of Justice make the changes he ordered by March 31 or the trial would be stayed indefinitely and he would consider releasing the men on bail.

“Removal of the source of unfairness in this trial requires either that the accused’s conditions of incarceration be drastically altered or that they be released on bail,” he said.

The trial has been told the 12 intended to undertake “violent jihad” in Australia and had formed a terror cell.

They had discussed killing then prime minister John Howard and had identified railway stations and football grounds as likely targets.

The accused, who have all pleaded not guilty are: Abdul Nacer Benbrika, 47; Abdullah Merhi, 22; Shane Kent, 31; Majed Raad, 23; Aimen Joud, 23; Ahmed Raad, 24; Fadl Sayadi, 28; Ezzit Raad, 26; Hany Taha; Shoue Hammoud, 28; Bassam Raad, 26; and Amer Haddara, 28.

It is just a few days until Easter, the most important date in the Christian calendar. But for 700 Muslims who have gathered in a rural caravan park, this week has a different religious significance.

And to some of their neighbours, the thrice-daily calls to prayer are proving a strain on a harmonious relationship. The Iranian Muslims have converged on the Trevelgue Holiday Park in Porth, Cornwall, to celebrate yesterday’s Persian New Year.

Every day at sunrise, noon and sunset they broadcast their prayers Muhammedan war cry, known as Adhan, on a loudspeaker system. But some residents are complaining that the noise is shattering the idyll of the quiet village near Newquay.

Neighbour Emma Brewer, 35, said “the novelty soon wore off” after the group arrived at the camp last weekend.

She said: “It lasts about 20 to 30 minutes and it is rather loud. I’m a bit naffed off by it, to be honest.”

Another resident added: “We are going to have to put up with this all week. It’s going off in the morning, at 5am.”

A neighbour from nearby St Columb Minor says he was offended because he could hear the chanting as he made his way back from church.

He said: “Why was this broadcast at such a high level of volume so as to be heard miles away? Do the Christian church bells ring out in amplified volumes on Fridays in areas where they are at prayer?

“This was totally unnecessary especially on such an important day in our Christian calendar.”

Father Tom Veneracion, the parish priest, is worried about a backlash.

“The idea is to be discreet because we don’t want to inflame any sensitivities,” he says. “There isn’t even a signboard outside the church. No signs at all.”

Vienna – A high-ranking representative of Austria’s Catholic Church for the first time openly voiced reservations against the construction of minarets. “Mosques with minarets would be a provocation,” Elmar Fischer, bishop of Austria’s westernmost diocese in Vorarlberg, said on Tuesday in a press release.
While Austria’s population had been accepting of prayer rooms and mosques in the past, mosques with minarets would run counter to the feelings of “the majority of Vorarlberg’s population.”

Gadaffi:

The Bible we have now is not the one that was revealed to Issa [Jesus] and the Old Testament is not the one that was revealed to Musa. Muhammad is mentioned in both (original versions), but the Tora and Bible we have now, there is no mention of him,” the Libyan leader, more known for his controversial statements than his piety, said.

“It means that it (Bible) has been forged. Prophet Muhammad was sent to mankind. Allah wanted mankind to have one religion. The Koran that we have is the only book that was sent by Allah. We believe in the Bible as well as the Tora.”

He said Prophet Musa (Moses) and Issa (Jesus) talked about the coming of Muhammad in the Bible which has been in existence for centuries.

“Issa is mentioned in the Koran 25 times, Musa is mentioned 128 times, Mariam (Mary mother of Jesus) is mentioned 30 times. It is all glorifying and highly respectful. We cannot be Muslims unless we believe in Issa.

We have to look for the Bible and Tora that were sent to Moses and Jesus, but where can you find them? Unfortunately, the holy book that was sent by Allah was written by mankind and forged,” Col. Gadaffi, speaking through a translator said.
