Obama: The United States is “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world”
- What planet is he on? (Hint: its not ‘Planet Irf…’)
One Nation Under Islam?  Yep, that was quick…!
“Obama Says U.S. Could Be Seen as a Muslim Country, Too,” by Jeff Zeleny for the New York Times Caucus Blog, June 2 (thanks to JW):
HAHN, Germany — As President Obama prepared to leave Washington to fly to the Middle East, he conducted several television and radio interviews at the White House to frame the goals for a five-day trip, including the highly-anticipated speech Thursday at Cairo University in Egypt. In an interview with Laura Haim on Canal Plus, a French television station, Mr. Obama noted that the United States also could be considered as “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.”…
Was that an observation or a wish?
“What I want to do is to create a better dialogue so that the Muslim world understands more effectively how the United States, but also how the West thinks about many of these difficult issues like terrorism, like democracy, to discuss the framework for what’s happened in Iraq and Afghanistan and our outreach to Iran, and also how we view the prospects for peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Mr. Obama said. The president said the United States and other parts of the Western world “have to educate ourselves more effectively on Islam.”
I’m all for that. And I hereby offer my services to assist in this great effort.
“And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” Mr. Obama said. “And so there’s got to be a better dialogue and a better understanding between the two peoples.”…
Here is a What-Is-Obama-Smoking? Alert:
Indonesia: 200 million Muslims. India: 156 million Muslims. Pakistan: 150 million Muslims.
United States: 2.3 million Muslims (according to the Pew Research Center).
“I think the most important thing I want to tell young people is that, regardless of your faith, those who build as opposed to those who destroy I think leave a lasting legacy, not only for themselves but also for their nations,” Mr. Obama said. “And the impulse towards destruction as opposed to how can we study science and mathematics and restore the incredible scientific and knowledge — the output that came about during centuries of Islamic culture.”…
A comment from Hugh Fitzgerald:
….the incredible scientific and knowledge — the output that came about during centuries of Islamic culture.”…Â
This is a staple of Muslim, especially Muslim Arab, propaganda — about that High islamic Culture we hear so much about.Â
But if you look at the list — always the same list of the same dozen or even two dozen luminaries — Rhazes (Al-Razi) , and Avicenna (Ibn Sina), and Averroes (Ibn Rushd), and Al-Farabi, and Al-Khwarizmi, and so on, and then compare that list with the of names that would appear on a list of luminaries who contributed, in the non-Islamic West, to art, science, music, literature, philosophy, and the development of political freedoms, the relative impoverishment of Islam, which so limits the varieties of artistic expression (no music, no sculpture, no paintings of living creatures) and the enterprise of science (for Islam encourages a habit of mental submission, and discourages the free and skeptical inquiry without which science cannot take place), and the way in which Islam, based as it is entirely on an acceptance of the Qur’an as the literal, uncreated, and therefore immutable word of God, and on the understanding that Muhammad is the Perfect Man (al-insan al-kamil), the Model of Conduct (uswa hasana), Muhammad who was nothing like Moses, or Jesus, or the Buddha, but was a warrior, who offered advice for those who would make war (such as “war is deception”) and offered example after example of how he followed his own precepts. Islam is based — Obama doesn’t realize this, or doesn’t wish to realize it — not on the idea of the individual, but of the collective, the Umma, and the individual cannot exercise his free will, his free choice, but must remain loyal to Islam. And Islam is also based not on the idea of questioning that can lead to moral development, but of passive acceptance, without questioning (for “Allah Knows Best” as the most common expression, after “Inshallah,” has it), of what is Haram and what is Halal. It is a faith stripped of moral sense, or rather, what makes sense, what is right, is whatever helps Islam. That is the supreme good; in Islam, Islam itself is worshipped.Â
Has Obama studied any of this?Â
Does he know, coming back to the “great achievements” of Islamic culture, that when one examines the claims, and refuses to accept exaggerated remarks without evidence, there is far less there than he may think, or certainly than Muslims claim. Algebra, and the Zero, come from the Sanskrit mathematiicians. Paper and gunpowder from the Chinese. As for the famous translations of Greek works, in cluding a few (not all) by Aristotle, the translators were, in both Cordoba and Baghdad, Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews. The most famous man of science produced under Islam was Rhazes (al-Razi) who was a freethinker, as was Averrooes. And finally, what one discovers is that this High Islamic Civllization briefly flourished, in the first centuries of Musllim rule, over very large numbers of Christians, Jews, and in Iran, Zoroastrians. One finds that many of those assumed, because of their Arabic names, to be Muslim, were in fact Christians and Jews, or in some cases, were only a generation or two removed from being Christian or Jewish and had been raised in a milieu that included Christians and Jews and the influence of their ways of thought, even though the rulers were Muslim. That is surely what expalins the sudden extinguishment of that “High Islamic Civilization” at the very moment when the Muslim numbers expanded, while Christians and Jews, to escape the onerous condition of being non-Muslims under such rule, converted in large numbers.Â
I doubt if Obama has read Ibn Warraq’s “Why I Am Not A Muslim” which briefly mentions this matter. I doubt if he has read the standard histories of mathematics and technology, or if he has read the historian of science Toby Huff, on the question of why science developed in the West, and not under Islam. I doubt if he has read Stanley Jaki. Or read Charles Singer on the history of technology, or read anyone, Bell or the later historians of mathematics. If he did, he would soon realize that the myths about the great contributions of Islamic culture are as false as the myth of the “Dark Aages” (see the French historian Pernoux), and the myth of “convivencia” in Islamic Spain (see Georges Vajda, see Evariste Levi-Provencal, see Richard Fletcher).Â
He really has to learn a good deal more before he presumes to speak on this matter, and by virtue not of being learned, but of being merely a Prince Of Our Celebrity Disorder, is allowed to broadcast, and hence further belief by primitive masses in, what is essentially nonsense. .
