The convoy, comprised of 150 vehicles and 370 people, brought $5 million of aid to Gaza. Egyptian officials would not allow 17 people to enter, the group said.
The Viva Palestina convoy has been hailed by organizers as the largest convoy to break the Gaza embargo.
MADRID – Jew-haters under false flag, (“Aid groups”) planning a second peace flotilla to Gaza hope to send at least twice the number of boats as took part in the first ill-fated attempt in May, they announced Tuesday.
The second flotilla will have “between 12 and 20 boats” carrying humanitarian aid compared to just six for the first, Manuel Tapial, a Spanish member of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, told a news conference. (ME Online)
The Viva Palestina convoy has been joined by ships from Morocco, Algeria, Jordan and Persian Gulf nations. Two of the ships were to pass through the point at which Israeli troops boarded the Mavi Marmara aid convoy in May.
Israeli troops used force on the activists in that incident, leaving eight Turks and one U.S.-Turkish dual citizen dead. Israel said its troops were attacked by those on board, but passengers on the boat said they were fired on without provocation.
Among those on board the Viva Palestina convoy are 40 of the passengers who were on the Mavi Marmara. Viva Palestina organizers planned a commemoration service at that location.
Israel, which enforces a naval blockade off the coast, announced in June that it would loosen its embargo on impoverished Gaza, allowing more civilian goods and construction materials to flow in while still banning military equipment and weapons.
Gaza is ruled by Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic movement that is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, Israel and the European Union.
“We have driven more than 3,000 miles to bring this essential aid and to break this illegal siege of Gaza,” convoy director Kevin Ovenden said.
The organization said thousands of Palestinians greeted the convoy.
