Imam claims nobody wants sharia but sharia would cure 90% of all our societies ills….
“BASELESS ATTACK”: Cairns born and bred Abdul Aziz, the imam of the Cairns Mosque, has lashed out at anti-Islam propaganda.
CAIRNS’ most senior Muslim has spoken out against an anti-Islam campaign being waged via Far North letterboxes.
Flyers were recently dropped at a number of Cairns addresses urging the community to boycott halal products, reading “say no” to halal certification, Islamic jizyah tax (a tax on non-Muslims living under Muslim rule), sharia law and multiculturalism.
A website listed on the flyer promotes a national movement which claims that buying halal food supports the halal council which funds terrorist organisations.
Abdul Aziz, imam of the Cairns Mosque, said he had heard of the movement in southern parts of the state, but was deeply disturbed it had made its way to Cairns.
“It’s just a ridiculous thing,” he said. “It’s a free country and you can’t stop people from voicing their opinions, but I wish they’d get their facts right first. That’s where the danger is, in the ignorance they are spreading.”
Mr Aziz oversees the halal killing of animals for Cairns’ estimated 200-strong Islamic community, which includes praying over animals before they are killed. He said he Âresented being implicated in terrorism but said he understood a lack of education was behind the Âcampaign.
“I’d like to sit down with some of these people, I’m Âalways available to have a talk and put them on the right path,” he said.
He would like to use the opportunity to do da’awa, which is his religious obligation. That’s what “put them on the right path” means.
“I have lived in Cairns my whole life and my family came out 100 years ago from India, we’ve been good servants of the community. These people who make these things, I wonder how much they do for the community.”
The flyers’ creators could not be contacted for comment.
