Sri Lankan PM offers resignation after protesters storm presidential residence
Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced he is willing to step down from office on Saturday, Reuters reports. According to the country’s parliamentary speaker, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa also plans to step down and is expected to do so on July 13. The announcements come hours after tens of thousands of protesters stormed the president’s official residence in Colombo and set fire to the prime minister’s residence, forcing him to move to safety. Demonstrations across the country led to an imposed curfew as the economic crisis continues.
