India: Muslim Bollywood star quotes Qur’an to claim that there is no place for terrorism in Islam
The story says he quoted Qur’an 5:32-33.
5:32 says: “For that reason, we decreed for the children of Israel that whoever kills a human being for anything other than manslaughter or corruption on the earth, it will be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoever saves the life of one person, it will be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came to them of old with clear proofs, but afterwards, indeed, many of them committed excesses on earth.”
That’s often represented as a blanket condemnation of violence, as Khan claims here, but actually it is nothing of the kind. It’s not even addressed to Muslims, much less to all mankind; instead, it is addressed only to the Children of Israel. What it is saying is that Allah gave them this command and they disobeyed it. It’s not a rejection of violence, it’s a condemnation of the Jews.
5:33 makes this abundantly clear: “The only reward for those who make war upon Allah and his messenger and struggle to sow corruption on earth will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be expelled from the land. Such will be their degradation in this world, and in the hereafter, theirs will be an awful doom.”
So the passage Shah Rukh Khan adduces to claim that Islam rejects terrorism ends up with crucifixion and amputation for foes of Allah and his messenger. That’s a clear rejection of terrorism, all right.
