The Labor party’s proposed ‘Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation Bill’ is a direct threat to our democracy. The bill as proposed makes the government and their faceless bureaucrats the arbiters of truth. The government will decide what is allowed and not allowed to be displayed on social media. This proposal is a massive threat to free speech. As to be expected, there is a provision which excludes federal, state and local government. One rule for them and another for us. Benjamin Franklin once said: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” He was right.
