It would be overly optimistic to suggest that Germany is “turning right”. Germany is socialist from the bootstraps up. People believe in the authority of an omnipotent state. That won’t change anytime soon.
My first thought was that this was damage control by CDU apparatchiks. The CDU was complicit in taking Germany to the abyss and sees the writing on the wall. However, the fact that this new party is headed by Chairman Hans-Georg Maassen, gives great hope for real change. Maassen is the former head of the German domestic intelligence agency (the BfV), who was forced out of public office (by Merkel) in 2018, ‘under a cloud of accusations’ of providing information to the AfD and questioning ‘reports of far-right violence against foreigners’.

The current Germany farmers rebellion is a response to the government’s plans to reduce or withdraw tax breaks for the agriculture sector, which were announced in late December 2023 as part of the 2024 budget. The farmers are protesting these changes as they believe it would endanger their livelihood. The next elections in Germany that would be relevant to vote on this subject matter are the 2024 European Parliament elections and the 2024 German federal election. These elections will determine the composition of the European Parliament and the German government, respectively, and could have an impact on the policies affecting farmers and the agricultural sector.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock went on Fox News on Friday and issued some bold words which are sure to harm already strained Berlin-Beijing relations. She was making a point about her country staying the course in support for Ukraine when she in passing referred to Chinese President Xi Jinping as a “dictator”.
“We will support Ukraine as long as it takes,” Baerbock said when the Fox host asked her about how she sees the future of the conflict going. Then she offered the following: “If Putin were to win this war, what sign would that be for other dictators in the world, like Xi, like the Chinese president? Therefore, Ukraine has to win this war.”
