Syria’s al-Sharaa promises to punish those who tortured, killed detainees

The main commander of the Syrian fighters who toppled Bashar al-Assad has warned that anyone involved in the torture or killing of detainees during the deposed president’s rule would be hunted down and pardons were out of the question.

“We will pursue them in Syria, and we ask countries to hand over those who fled so we can achieve justice,” Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Julani, said in a statement published on the Syrian state TV’s Telegram channel on Wednesday.

Israel smokes Islamic terrorists in Palmyra

The SANA news agency has published additional information on the Israeli attack that killed 36 people in Syria’s Palmyra.

The agency, citing a military source, said the Israeli attack took place at 1:30pm on Wednesday (10:30 GMT) and came from the direction of al-Tanf in the US-occupied part of the Homs governorate.

The US has had a garrison in al-Tanf since 2016.

“The aggression resulted in the death of 36 martyrs, the injury of more than 50 others, and the infliction of significant material damage to the targeted buildings and the surrounding area,” the source said.

Palmyra’s ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was captured by ISIL (ISIS) in 2015 and partially destroyed before it was recaptured by the Syrian army.

SDF commander pledges to protect historic sites from ISIL

 

The leader of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, has said the group is ready to work with international partners to protect historic sites in Syria after the military commander warned of the threat of a resurgent ISIL (ISIS).

“During the ISIS threat in 2015, we helped protect the remains of Suleyman Shah by facilitating their transfer to the Ashma region,” he said in a post on X.

“Today, we reaffirm our firm commitment to preserving historic sites, and our readiness to coordinate with all concerned parties to facilitate the return of [Shah’s] remains to the original shrine site, in line with previous international agreements and with full respect for cultural heritage,” he added.

ISIL destroyed several ancient and medieval sites across Syria and Iraq in the 2010s – when it controlled large swaths of both countries – as the extremist group imposed its fundamentalist vision of Salafi Islam.
