So let’s take a look – by most metrics, a winnable seat is one that is within 5% of being won by the other party.

After the 2022 election, this applied to 18 seats nationwide for the Coalition: Bennelong, Boothby, Brisbane, Curtin, Gilmore, Goldstein, Hunter, Kooyong, Lingiari, Lyons, Mackellar, McEwen, Parramatta, Paterson, Robertson, Ryan, Tangney and Wentworth.

And for those 18 seats – we had 9 males and 9 females.

So not only is Ley heralding illiberal solutions to this “woman problem” of preselected candidates, but it is a problem that doesn’t even exist in the first place.

Ley was the Deputy Opposition Leader for the last 3 years and instead of being introspective, she is footing the blame at the feet of grassroots members and saying she wants females to far outnumber male candidates.

Self responsibility for the election loss and the idea of merit seem to be forgotten in her “modern” Australia.

My suggestion: solving the “woman problem” might involve actually standing up for people like Moira Deeming, opposing the inclusion of biological males in women’s sport and suggesting that female candidates vying for preselection count for far more than their gender.
