In early August, Lebanon declared that it was no longer under Iranian patronage or dictates, and then vowed to disarm Hizballah. A Foreign Policy article entitled “Why Hezbollah Is Rich and Lebanon Is Poor” tells part of the story of how the people of Lebanon suffered an economic collapse under Hizballah. And now, Hizballah is determined to hold on to power, threatening to provoke a civil war in the face of efforts to disarm the group.

*IDF Flattens Hezbollah Underground Site*

The IDF says fighter jets struck a Hezbollah military site on Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon this morning, targeting infrastructure that included underground components after Israeli surveillance identified active terrorist activity there.

“The existence of the site and the activity within it constitute a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon,” an IDF statement noted, underscoring that the facility was not defensive but part of Hezbollah’s war machine pressed up against the border.

Beaufort Ridge has long served Hezbollah as a fortified node—tunnels, command posts, and fire-management points threaded into the terrain. Similar complexes on and around the ridge have been hit repeatedly in recent weeks as Israel hunts subterranean networks north of the Litani.
