The Knee-Jerk Smearing of Charlie Kirk
On last Thursday night’s ABCTV Victoria coverage, Tamara Oudyn read her script:
He was a conservative influencer who campaigned for gun rights. Now the American right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk has been shot and killed in what’s been described as a political assassination.
Hold it there, Tam! The late Charlie Kirk didn’t need to campaign for gun rights – they’re written into the US Constitution and continually validated by cases in the Supreme Court.
The ABC script-writers wanted to frame Kirk’s death-by-bullet as karma for his supposed gun “campaigning”. Tamara threw to ABC Washington correspondent Ben Knight to lock-in the narrative.
Knight: Charlie Kirk was a provocateur for the Christian right.
What!? Do ABC staff consider that preaching Christianity, as Kirk did, makes him a ‘provocateur’?
Knight: … advocating for issues like traditional gender roles [more ‘provocation’ for saying there are only two sexes], abortion bans…”
Kirk was indeed uncompromisingly against abortion, except to save the life of the mother. A dozen US States take a similar position. Other US States are relaxed about late-term abortions. That’s how the US debate goes.
Knight: …and gun rights.
Never mind that Kirk was but one day dead, like a dog with a bone the ABC was back on gun-rights . 7PM News included a truncated Kirk clip from back in April 2023. The full text, in which I’ve restored in bold the sentence cut by the ABC was:
“You will never live in a society when you have an armed citizenry and you won’t have a single gun death. That is nonsense. It’s drivel. But I am—I think it’s worth it, I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.”
The ABC’s Knight added, for emphasis: “It was the issue he was debating as he was shot.”
This was, at best, a half-truth, omitting that Kirk was addressing how transgenders are over-represented in the ranks of recent mass shooters.[1] It took until Monday before the ABC finally got around to mentioning that the alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, has been in a relationship with a man transitioning to female.
Kirk’s actual last words were to a questioner who asked:
Questioner: Do you know how many transgender Americans have been mass shooters over the last 10 years?
Kirk (amid applause): Too many.
Questioner: Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last 10 years?
Kirk: Counting or not counting gang violence?
Second later he was shot, though the timing was a sheer coincidence as the shooter was too distant to hear the dialogue.
Don’t imagine the ABC’s flagship current affairs daily, Sarah Ferguson’s 7.30, would bother to follow up this minor assassination. Instead she topped off her Thursday session with timeless pap about “building prosthetics”. Since 7.30 doesn’t run on Friday night, I’m still waiting for her take on the murder.
Friday’s ABCTV 7pm News was happy to dub Kirk, not once but twice, as a “right wing influencer”. Can you even imagine the ABC describing anyone as a “left wing influencer”? As a test, I put “far right” into the ABC search box, and got literally a thousand-odd hits, and that was back only to 2020. When I put in the “far left” descriptor, I got a mere 200 hits, and that was all the way back a quarter century to 1999.
Friday’s ABCTV continued, after throwing to US correspondent Carrington Clark:
Clark: Charlie Kirk is being called a martyr by some members of the conservative movement.
Why such ABC quibbling? The Oxford online dictionary defines “martyr” as “a person who is killed because of their religious or other beliefs.” Kirk surely fitted that bill.
Clark gazed into his cloudy crystal ball and opined:
It’s unclear what lasting impact his assassination will have, whether it will shock the country away from a path of increasing political violence, or whether it will further fuel the partisan divide.
In my opinion, shooting dead a young advocate for civilised discussion, who happened to be a Trump supporter, might indeed “fuel the partisan divide”. Clark’s other alternative, of the shooting bringing quietude to the US, is already belied by the on-line gloating of tens of thousands of “left-wing lunatics”, as Trump described them.[2]
In Saturday’s 7pm News, the crass ABC continued to call Kirk a “right-wing influencer” and “slain MAGA activist”. Washington correspondent Clark tut-tutted about “opinionated language used by politicians” about the alleged shooter and fretted about Robinson’s ability to get a fair trial. I don’t remember any tut-tutting from the ABC about pre-trial “opinionated language” concerning the cop who killed career felon George Floyd and precipitated the so-called Black Lives Matter riots, arson and deaths across America. Nor, for that matter, did it seem in the least concerned about its own relentless assaults on the character and reputation of Cardinal George Pell.
By 7pm Sunday, ABCTV’s bulletin was only too happy to ignore the assassination, in favour of another leftist narrative involving the huge Sunday “Unite the Kingdom” protests in London against Britain’s on-going Islamisation. ABCTV allocated all of 33 seconds to this item (from 17mins25secs to 17.58). The item viewed the agitation against excessive immigration from the Third World as the dirty doing of “extremist right-wing activist Tommy Robinson”.[3]
In fact the immediate rationale for the rally included anger at third-world arrivistes enjoying UK hotel stays — in particular, a 41-year-old Ethiopian named Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, who, within a week of his illicit transit of the English Channel in July and having been comfortably settled with 130 other small-boat arrivals in Essex’s Bell Hotel, pursued and sexually assaulted a terrified 14-year-old British girl and a grown woman who tried to protect her.
Kebatu told the child, who was frozen with fear, that he wanted to “make lovely babies” and her age “did not matter”. He was convicted on five counts after a two-day trial a month ago in which he denied guilt and blamed his two victims for leading him on. Sentencing is pending but he is likely immune from deportation.
Just a fortnight ago authorities overturned an injunction to block asylum seekers from the same Bell Hotel, leading to locals’ clashes with police and, indirectly, the ‘Take Back Britain’ flag rally.
The same ABC bulletin took care to mention there was a 5000-strong “Stand Up to Racism” counter-rally against the main protest. The ABC did not say “so-called ‘Stand Up to Racism’”, thus implying the main rally was racist.
As the ABC always does with protests and causes it doesn’t like, it focused on small clashes rather than the epochal rally sporting the flags of Britain.
The ABC said, “At least 26 officers were injured, four seriously, as they attempted to control the huge crowds.” This sounds serious – and all violence is to be deplored — but my checking finds the four most “seriously injured” involved the following: Broken teeth; a possible broken nose; concussion; a prolapsed disc (spinal injury) and an unspecified “head injury”. It is likely some of these injuries were from thrown bottles and cans.
Again, I deplore violence and sympathise with the injured police. But what lesser injuries did the other 22 hurt coppers sustain? Bruised toes? Black eyes? And since there were some 1600 coppers involved, we can conclude 1574 went home without a scratch.
The ABC put the crowd at 150,000-plus. As Quadrant Online mentioned on Monday (Sept 15), helicopter footage shows a crowd worth many multiples of a full house at the MCG. The stated figure seems to be the police estimate which, given the nasty state of British politics right now, can be assumed as hardly objective.
We have another test, that the ABC was happy last month to tag Sydney’s anti-Israel so-called “March for Humanity” rally across the Harbour Bridge at 100,000. Again, the London rally was many multiples of the Harbour Bridge crowd, not a mere 50% or so bigger. The ABC’s attempts to play down this London rally are pathetic, since anyone can see for themselves on YouTube and X.
The ABC made no mention of the other cause driving fed-up Britishers’ to take to the streets – officialdom’s Orwellian assaults on their free speech[4] , including dozens of arrests and cautions daily for ‘offensive’ social media posts.
Two days earlier, ABC Radio National did another of its hit jobs on Charlie Kirk with the assistance of a Texas University academic. What the ABC didn’t mention was that its pet its academic, Professor Jeremi Suri, has made about 20 donations to the Democrats in the past five years, for a total $US2900 (A4350).
Trust the ABC on Charlie Kirk’s martyrdom or anything? I don’t think so.

[1] Just last month, 23-year-old male shooter, Robin Westerman, claiming to be transitioning to female, slaughtered two children and wounded 14 at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis.
[2] For example, a teacher at Corvette Junior Public School in Toronto, Canada, on September 11 allegedly showed Grade 5 and 6 students (ages 10-11) a graphic video over and over again of Kirk’s death, claiming Kirk deserved to die. Several children were traumatized, went home upset, and complained to their parents, leading to complaints to school administrators. The teacher has since been fired.
[3] Tommy Robinson was sentenced to 18 months in prison on October 28, 2024, for contempt of court involving false allegations about a Syrian refugee. He was released last May after serving seven months, but is likely to receive further prison time.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage warned Americans that they could face similar arrests in the UK for social media posts, comparing the situation to North Korea.
Author J.K. Rowling condemned the arrest, questioning what the UK had become; Elon Musk reposted her comment, labeling Britain a “police state.” Last year Lucy Connolly was sent down for 31 months for a tweet allegedly inciting arson against migrant hotels — a tweet she took down without prompting after three hours. She has since been released, with a condition of parole being that she no longer shares her views on social media and does not speak to the press.
