In his Knesset speech, Donald Trump, flush with triumph, and enjoying the hero’s welcome the Israeli parliament members gave him, made a number of statements that deserve scrutiny. He said that “Israel has won all that can be won by force of arms.” Is this true? The IDF was forced to call off its final battle against the last intact Hamas fighting units in Gaza City. Just on the verge of victory, its hand was stayed, so that Hamas remains, and can present itself as “still standing” despite the very worst the IDF could throw at it. Another month of fighting — that “force of arms” Trump referred to — might have conclusively put paid to Hamas. Trump prefers to think, or to pretend to think, that the IDF had inflicted all the damage it could, that Hamas was already destroyed. It was not.
