Before Trump walked back Iran attack threats, Islamic Republic threatened to murder him
From the mullahs’s perspective, it looks as if the threat worked. They announced that they would assassinate Trump, and suddenly the attack on Iran was off. The projection of Trump’s weakness, already established in his empty threat, is thus reinforced.

“If Iran shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go,” Trump wrote in a social media post on January 2.
Over the past two weeks, he repeated that threat several times, and he called on protesters to take over state institutions, promising them that “help is on the way”.
It seems he changed his mind. But that would be a disgusting betrayal.
