President Donald Trump insisted Wednesday he won’t use force to acquire Greenland. Not now, not ever. He made that clear during a speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) before the elites in Davos, Switzerland, assembled for the annual gathering.

The comments are the latest instance of President Trump warning European nations that cordial relations with Washington are dependent on their recognising America’s primacy in the Western alliance. European leaders awoke on Monday morning to a barrage of statements from the President, including one making clear that President Trump was breaking from the earlier fiction that the United Kingdom giving away the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, on which is a highly critical air and naval base, to a country within China’s sphere of influence was a decision of no consequence.

Rather, to surrender territory in this way is an act of stupidity and weakness which underlines the importance of the United States having the final say over the sovereignty of land its most important bases stand on — such as, for instance, Greenland.

Greenland minister breaks down while speaking about intense pressure from Trump’s administration.😟🌍

Greenland’s foreign minister Vivian Motzfeldt became emotional after tense meetings in Washington. She described days filled with heavy pressure following strong statements from former US president Donald Trump about taking control of Greenland. Speaking to local media, she said the workload was intense for a small team trying to protect their country’s future.

Her reaction showed how serious and personal the situation has become for Greenland’s leadership.

Motzfeldt met US vice president JD Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio alongside Denmark’s foreign minister. The talks ended with clear disagreement, especially over sovereignty and security claims. Trump has said Greenland is vital for US safety, but Denmark and Greenland firmly reject that idea. European leaders also pushed back, warning that any forced move would damage trust among allies.

Several Nato countries have now sent small military teams to Greenland to show support and stability. Denmark says these moves are defensive and meant to keep peace, not raise tension.

Despite the pressure, Greenland’s government says it remains strong and focused on keeping its people safe. With global attention growing, how will this power struggle shape the Arctic’s future?
