Albanese links Pauline Hanson to threats on Sydney mosque after refusing to condemn Grace Tame’s intifada chant

Anthony Albanese has directly linked Pauline Hanson’s rhetoric about Muslims to threats against a mosque, despite refusing to link Grace Tame’s calls for “intifada” with antisemitism.

Ms Hanson has been widely criticised for suggesting there were “no good Muslims”, before backtracking and apologising to anyone who was offended.

She should never apologise for telling factual truth.

There is no evidence of any threat against a mosque.

Mr Albanese has refused to condemn Australian of the Year Grace Tame when she led a rally chant of “From Gadigal to Gaza, globalise the intifada” at an anti-Israel protest.

The slogan was widely condemned, including by NSW Premier Chris Minns, as antisemitic and a call for violent action against Israel.

Asked in the house of representatives by Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh if he would condemn Ms Tame’s “display of antisemitism”, he declined to do so.

“We need to not continually look for political opportunities from what is a devastating situation, we need to turn the temperature down,” Mr Albanese said.

He also referred Ms McIntosh to his previous comments, including that “people have different views and very strong views about the Middle East”.

“They’re entitled to express those, and they’re entitled to do that in a peaceful way. The Australian government does that as well.”

 Mr Albanese faced repeated calls to condemn chants of “globalise the intifada”, including from Opposition Leader Angus Taylor.

“These were protests where we heard people calling for violence. ‘Globalise the intifada’ is a call for violence, let’s be clear,” Mr Taylor told Sky News Sunday Agenda.

“I condemn a Prime Minister who cannot call out people who are calling for violence. ‘Globalise the intifada’ is a call for violence and this Prime Minister cannot condemn it.”

“He has not got the leadership capacity, he doesn’t have the moral clarity, he does not have the understanding of right and wrong that I think is important in a leader.”

Mr Albanese declined to comment when Sky News asked if he would like to condemn Ms Tame.

Conversely, Ms Hanson has called for Ms Tame to be stripped of her Australian of the Year honour for chanting “globalise the intifada”. 

“Grace Tame remains an angry young lady whose rise to prominence went to her head,” Ms Hanson said in a statement.

“Since being awarded Australian of the Year, Grace has become a grievance tool used by the Greens and Labor.

“She’s Australia’s version of Greta Thunberg who is trying to hold onto their 15 seconds of fame. Her language and views are a danger to herself and every Australian.”

Earlier this week, Ms Hanson said Islam “concerns” her and claimed Muslims “hate Westerners”.

On Wednesday, Sky News host Chris Kenny challenged Senator Hanson’s comments and asked if she wished to correct the remarks or apologise to Islamic Australians.

Senator Hanson offered to put her thoughts another way.

“If there is a person out there who is a Muslim and does not support sharia law, female circumcision, child marriages, who (does) support our culture our way of life and our laws, then I apologise to you – if my comment has offended you,” she said.

Ms Hanson said she refused to be “shut down” over the comments.

“Why do I have to be shut down because I’m concerned about the future of this nation? Why am I shut down because I am concerned,” she continued.

“I don’t want Australia to become like England. I don’t want a caliphate across the world, that’s [what] they’re pushing for. I don’t want to see sharia law. I don’t want the burqas worn by women.”

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan said the comments showed Senator Hanson was “not fit to lead a major party”.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the Senator’s remarks as a “racist intervention” on Wednesday afternoon, saying “NSW is full of wonderful, great Australians of Muslim faith who care about our country”.

The Prime Minister also weighed in on an interview on the ABC, calling Senator Hanson “divisive”.

“Pauline Hanson is someone who never comes up with any solutions, just identifies and promotes grievance,” Mr Albanese said.

On Wednesday the Lebanese Muslim Association also condemned the remarks, with association secretary Gamel Kheir saying “Labor is running scared that if they stand up for the Muslim community they will lose support to her”.

One Nation recruit Barnaby Joyce also distanced himself from his leader’s comments, but refused to answer questions from The Australian.

He told a reporter, “I will talk to Pauline Hanson about Pauline Hanson’s comments. What are you asking me for? See you, bye,” before hanging up the phone.

Earlier on Wednesday, Senator Hanson offered a partial apology on the ABC.

She said she apologised if she “offended anyone out there that doesn’t believe in sharia law, or multiple marriages, or wants to bring ISIS brides in, or people from Gaza that believe in a caliphate”.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek told Sydney’s 2GB he had invited Senator Hanson to the Lakemba Ramadan night market, after she added she felt unwanted in the Western Sydney suburb while speaking with the ABC.
