Liberal Senator James Paterson has urged the Australian Federal Police to launch investigations into the “deeply disturbing” mosques celebrating the life of Iran’s former leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Portions of the Australian Muslim community have publicly announced they will mourn the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader as a “pure soul”, despite Khamenei’s place at the head of Iran’s brutal regime since 1989.
While the majority of Iranian-Australians celebrated news of Khamenei’s death by US-Israeli airstrikes, parts of the Islamic community have honoured him.
The Masjid Arrahman Mosque in Kingsgrove, Husaineyat Sayeda Zaynab in Banksia and Flagbearer Foundation in Arncliffe, have all posted tributes to Khamenei.
The same mosques mourned the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah after he was killed in an Israeli airstrike in late 2024.
El Zahra Centre in Melbourne similarly announced its “condolences” for the “martyrdom of Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei”.
Speaking to Sky News, Senator Paterson said celebrating the life of Khamenei was antithetical to Australian values considering “everything he has done to our country”.
“It’s deeply disturbing, whether it’s a violation of the law or not, that anyone in Australia thinks it’s a good idea to hold a celebration of the life of the Ayatollah after everything he has done to our country, the Middle East and Iranians,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“But it may also be a breach of the laws because it is an offence to glorify terrorism, it is an offence to praise a terrorist organisation in a way that incites others to take out an act of terrorism and, of course, it’s also an offence to display a symbol or logo of a listed terrorist organisation.”

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has been listed as a designated state sponsor of terrorism in Australia.
The designation came after it was revealed the IRGC orchestrated two attacks against Australia’s Jewish community.
The IRGC was behind the fire-bombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne in December, 2024 as well as the arson attack on Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Sydney in October 2024.
“So I hope the Federal Police are now investigating these mosques and anyone associated with those activities for breaches of the law,” Senator Paterson said.
Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-CEO Alex Ryvchin has also pushed for mosques honouring Khamenei to be subjected to criminal investigation.
“We cannot allow terrorists to be glorified in our country or for such actions to occur without consequence,” he said in a post to social media.
“We have seen where brazen support for terrorism and glorification of violence can take our country.”

Iranian Australian Council spokesman Ali Hosseini told The Australian the public events celebrating Khamenei were “threatening” to the people who were against his murderous regime.
“When you look at it from the outside, these are people that are sympathetic to the late supreme leader of Iran. That means they have some ideas and ways of looking that is the same as him,” he said.
“Isn’t it dangerous for Australia and the nation? Some people are thinking the same way and are now mourning someone who was dangerous to the world.
“Knowing some people are in the same boat as him is scary to me, my family, the diaspora – it should be scary to all Australians.”
