‘We cannot allow terrorists to be glorified’: Australian mosques face calls for investigation after mourning Iran’s brutal leader Ali Khamenei
Australian mosques mourning Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei have faced calls for immediate criminal investigations over concerns they are honouring a terror regime.
Sections of Australia’s Muslim community have publicly mourned the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a “pure soul”, despite his decades at the helm of a brutal regime.
While the majority of Iranian-Australians celebrated news of Khamenei’s death by US-Israeli airstrikes, parts of the Islamic community have honoured him.

Hands Off Iran Protests: The Left Mourns the Ayatollah
The Masjid Arrahman Mosque in Kingsgrove, Husaineyat Sayeda Zaynab in Banksia and Flagbearer Foundation in Arncliffe, have all posted tributes to Khamenei.
El Zahra Centre in Melbourne similarly announced its “condolences” for the “martyrdom of Ayatollah Sayed Ali Khamenei”.
In response, Co-Chief Executive Officer of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry Alex Ryvchin said mosques honouring Khamenei should be subjected to criminal investigation.
“We cannot allow terrorists to be glorified in our country or for such actions to occur without consequence,” Mr Ryvchin said in a post to social media.
“We have seen where brazen support for terrorism and glorification of violence can take our country.”
The Masjid Arrahman Mosque said it would hold three nights of commemoration “on the occasion of the martyrdom” of Ali Hosseini Khamenei.
The mosque’s statement invited worshippers to attend a sitting room to recognise the “martyrs who rose during the American-Israeli aggression” against Iran.
El Zahra Centre Melbourne also announced a sitting room commemoration of Khamenei.
The Husaineyat Sayeda Zaynab Mosque posted it would hold a sitting event “for the soul” of “Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei”.
The Shi’a community organisation Flagbearer Foundation said it sent “condolences to the Imam of Our Time” and “all the believers”.
“We send our condolences to the Imam of Our Time, our Grand Scholars and all the believers on the news of the Martyrdom of Grand Ayatollah Sayed Ali Al Hosseini Al Khamenei and the martyrs at the school,” the Flagbearer Foundation wrote in a now-deleted post.
Australia’s chief body representing Iranians condemned the public events and said they were “dangerous” for Australia.
“When you look at it from the outside, these are people that are sympathetic to the late supreme leader of Iran. That means they have some ideas and ways of looking that is the same as him,” Iranian Australian Council spokesman Ali Hosseini told The Australian.
“Isn’t it dangerous for Australia and the nation? Some people are thinking the same way and are now mourning someone who was dangerous to the world.
“Knowing some people are in the same boat as him is scary to me, my family, the diaspora – it should be scary to all Australians.”
NSW Premier Chris Minns also hit out at Australians mourning the slain Ayatollah.
He said Khamenei was “evil” and warned against “mincing words about this”.
“The truth of the matter is, weeks ago he and his regime were responsible for killing 30,000 protesters within that city, for simply demonstrating against the regime and their practices,” Mr Minns said.
“This is a regime that murders young boys on the suspicion of being gay. I think we can call the mourning of this tyrant atrocious.”
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has been listed as a designated state sponsor of terrorism in Australia.
The designation came after it was revealed the IRGC orchestrated two attacks against Australia’s Jewish community.
The IRGC was behind the fire-bombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne in December, 2024 as well as the arson attack on Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Sydney in October 2024.
The honouring of the brutal ruler stood in contrast with the thousands of Iranian-Australians in Sydney and Melbourne who celebrated Khamenei’s death.
Khamenei, who ruled Iran for 36 years, presided over some of the most brutal atrocities in the Islamic Republic’s history.
Under Khamenei, there were mass killings across multiple generations, arbitrary arrests and executions of political dissidents.
In the most recent Iranian uprising from December 2025 – January 2026, up to tens of thousands of protesters against Khamenei were killed.
Khamenei was killed in coordinated US and Israeli airstrikes targeting senior regime figures and strategic sites on Saturday and Sunday.
