Hamit Coskun burned a copy of the Koran outside the Turkish consulate in protest at the Islamification of his home country. Despite Parliament having abolished blasphemy laws 18 years ago, he was convicted of a religiously aggravated public order offence.

Such is life in Two-Tier Keir’s Britain: while Coskun was prosecuted, the religious fanatic Moussa Kadri — who kicked him, spat at him and slashed at him with a large knife — avoided jail.

In October, with the support of the Free Speech Union, Coskun’s conviction was overturned by Mr Justice Bennathan, who said freedom of expression “must include the right to express views that offend, shock or disturb.”

Tomorrow, the Crown Prosecution Service will seek to overturn that judgment. If successful, it would amount to the creation of a Muslim blasphemy law and send a clear signal to other religious fanatics that violence is tolerated if the blasphemy code is breached.
