Pauline Hanson has declared she was left “gobsmacked” after touring the English town of Luton with controversial British activist Tommy Robinson, saying the experience reinforced her determination to prevent Australia from following the same path.
The One Nation leader, who is in Britain ahead of next week’s CPAC Great Britain conference, visited Robinson’s hometown as he pointed to what he described as the town’s changing demographics and the effects of mass immigration.
During a video shared on social media, Robinson drove Ms Hanson through parts of Luton before asking for her reaction.
“I’m gobsmacked because I wouldn’t think that I was in England,” Ms Hanson said.
“I definitely don’t want Australia to become like this. This is not Great Britain to me, and that’s why I’m going to protect Australia.”
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has diverted his attention from Labor to Pauline Hanson in a blistering attack on her party. He says One Nation would deliver an “eternity of pain” for Australia, lighting the fuse for a war of words with the senator.
Sharing the footage on X, Robinson said Ms Hanson had seen “what Australia could end up like if left to rot,” adding he hoped Australians would elect One Nation to “stop the rot”.
Ms Hanson has since argued Australia is at risk of heading down the same path as Britain, vowing that a One Nation government would ban the burqa and halt immigration from what she described as fundamentalist Islamic countries.
“There’s a change in the identity of Britain. They feel they’re losing their country,” Ms Hanson said.
“Australia will not be one of them under a One Nation government.”
The pair also recorded an interview for Robinson’s podcast, with Robinson describing Ms Hanson as one of the “bravest” women in the world and praising her for “fighting for the Australian people”.
Ms Hanson returned the compliment, calling Robinson “a brave man” who she said had “always had the best interest of his nation at heart.”
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, remains one of Britain’s most controversial political figures. He founded the English Defence League in 2009 and has been associated with anti-immigration campaigns and hardline views on Islam. He has also been convicted of several offences in the UK, including contempt of court. Supporters describe him as a free speech campaigner, while critics accuse him of promoting extremist views.
