Independent investigations, most notably an extensive satellite imagery report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), estimated that approximately 16,000 mosques in Xinjiang (about 65% of the region’s total) were targeted as part of government policies.
According to their data:
8,500 mosques were completely demolished. 7,500 mosques were damaged or had key Islamic architectural components stripped (such as removing minarets, domes, or Arabic script).
Satellite tracking shows that for the 8,500 mosques that were leveled completely, the vast majority of the plots of land remain entirely vacant.
Subsequent investigations by Human Rights Watch and the Financial Times documented that this campaign has spread to other northern regions of China under a state policy known as “Sinicization,” aimed at making religious structures look more traditionally Chinese
