Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), the modern incarnation of the KGB, NKVD, Cheka and others, is falling back on Victorian-era tropes of casting the United Kingdom as the global power-behind-the-curtain manipulating other countries for its own benefit. Moscow even rolled out the time-worn phrase “Perfidious Albion”, coined by the French and later adopted by German wartime propaganda to portray the then-British Empire as duplicitous, manipulating, and power-obsessed.

Take, for instance, a recent story that made the rounds on social media. According to these reports, Oxfam — the British NGO — found that a huge chunk of the World Bank’s spending on climate change-related issues was “missing.”

Thank heavens for fact-checkers like the Australian Associated Press — a Poynter Institute-accredited fact-checker from down under — which set us all straight: “An Oxfam report did not find that $US41 billion has gone ‘missing’  from the World Bank’s climate change fund, contrary to claims online.”

What a relief. Instead, the AAP noted, the Oxfam report found that the World Bank just doesn’t really know where the money went.

The fuse has been burning slowly, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s risky August invasion of Russia’s Kursk region is about to blow up in his face in spectacular fashion — as thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are suddenly in imminent peril of being encircled, according to open source intelligence analysts. The crisis comes as Zelensky is under increasing US pressure to reach a negotiated end to the war — and a loss of captured Russian territory promises to make his already-deteriorated bargaining position even weaker.

According to DeepStateMAP.live, an interactive map of the war run by Ukrainian military bloggers, their country’s forces in Kursk are nearly cleaved into two, with roughly three-quarters of Ukraine’s forces in Russia almost entirely surrounded on Friday. Their last connection between the two forces was a kilometer long and under 500 meters wide at its thinnest section. 

Black Bird Group military analyst Pasi Paroinen summed up the state of affairs for Reuters: 

“The situation (for Ukraine in Kursk) is very bad. Now there is not much left until Ukrainian forces will either be encircled or forced to withdraw. And withdrawal would mean running a dangerous gauntlet, where the forces would be constantly threatened by Russian drones and artillery.”

The ANC says it will maintain its ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran, regardless of any sanctions imposed by the US.

The party, which has historic ties with Iran, would not hide its friends, ANC first deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane told News24 on Wednesday.

This after meeting with Iranian Ambassador to South Africa Mansour Shakib Mehr at Luthuli House [ruling party headquarters] on Tuesday.

Earlier this week, the South African parliament debated Trump’s recent decision to cut off aid to South Africa. Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi actually defended Trump, and said that South Africa should become more self-sufficient: “Trump doesn’t owe South Africa a single cent whatsover, and for that reason, we need to stand on our own.”

But others, including Julius Malema of the extremist opposition party called the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), slammed Trump:

During the years that neocons in the west backed the war against Assad, the percentage of Christians in Syria went from ten percent to two percent. Now that Assad has been driven from power, many of the remaining Syrian Christians are being slaughtered and their holy places desecrated. Bari Weiss and John Bolton haven’t said a word about it. But no one who’s paying attention can be surprised it’s happening. Neocon projects in the Middle East invariably destroy ancient Christian communities, from Iraq to Gaza and in many places in between. Can this be an accident? You wonder.

It’s traumatic enough being ill or injured, and at the mercy of medical professionals, where hatred may well be a driving motive in treating patients when it should not be. Better screening and a zero-tolerance policy is needed in the medical profession, as antisemitism is escalating to creepy proportions.
