Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel wants footage of his stabbing in Wakeley church to stay online, court hears

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, the victim of a stabbing at a church in Wakeley, says footage of his attack should remain online, the federal court has heard.

The court met again on Wednesday to consider a dispute between eSafety commissioner Julie Inman Grant and social media platform X over the attack footage.

Ms Inman Grant last week issued a legal order to take down a few dozen instances of the footage posted on X. But X said it was an overreach to expect the videos to be hidden worldwide.

Lawyers for eSafety then took the matter to court, accusing X of defying its order. On Monday, Justice Geoffrey Kennett issued an injunction ordering X to hide the posts in question temporarily pending further consideration. X did not comply.

But in today’s hearing, X lawyer Marcus Hoyne repeated the argument that the global reach of the eSafety commissioner was “exorbitant”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Accused of Hate Speech for Calling Muslims ‘Infiltrators’

India’s main opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC), or simply “Congress,” accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of violating election laws on Monday by referring to Indian Muslims as “infiltrators” in a campaign speech.

India is in the middle of a massive election for the lower house of parliament, the Lok Sabha. The election began on Friday and is scheduled to last for six weeks. Modi and his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are heavily favored to win the election.

During a campaign speech in the state of Rajasthan on Sunday, Modi decided to criticize a remark that his predecessor, Manmohan Singh of the Congress party, made. Singh was prime minister from 2004 to 2014.

Singh gave a speech in 2006 in which he said his government should “devise innovative plans to ensure that minorities, particularly the Muslim minority, are empowered to share equitably in the fruits of development.”

“They must have the first claim on our resources,” Singh said in his 2006 remarks, referring to minorities in general, although his critics said he was speaking particularly of Muslims.

That line was highly controversial at the time, to the point where Singh’s office offered a “clarification” a few days later that accused critics of taking Singh “out of context” to make “deliberate and mischievous” misinterpretations of his comments.

The clarification said Singh was really calling for all of his top economic and social priorities to have “first claim on our resources,” not just affirmative action or welfare for Muslims or other disadvantaged minorities.

Modi and his party never accepted that clarification, and, in his controversial speech on Sunday, Modi hewed to the most negative interpretation of Singh’s 18-year-old remarks. He claimed Congress still thinks the way Singh allegedly did and plans to loot Indian taxpayers to finance wealth redistribution schemes if it gains power in the current election.

“What Congress has said in its manifesto is serious. It has said that if the Congress forms the government, everyone’s property will be surveyed; it will calculate gold belonging to mothers and sisters and then redistribute it. They won’t even spare your mangalsutra,” Modi told his audience in Rajasthan. A mangalsutra is a necklace given to Indian brides by their new husbands on their wedding day.

Alternative video platform Rumble stands with Musk and X against the Australian parliament’s ‘attack’ on free speech.

Rumble’s CEO, Chris Pavlovski, has voiced support for the fight against what he sees as Australia’s erosion of free speech. Pavlovski emphasised Rumble’s unity with figures like Musk and X, stating:

“Australia has made clear they believe in stripping away human rights (freedom of expression) in order to satisfy what they deem appropriate for your eyes and ears.” He firmly declared, “Australia is officially NOT a free country.”

I feel proud. Rumble is the bastion of free speech and protecting this human right, from video to cloud.

The controversy erupted after a federal court ordered X to temporarily conceal posts featuring graphic footage of the Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel attack, claiming it was too ‘distressing’ for Australians to be allowed to see for themselves.

This incident, involving a teenage terrorist, incited a violent riot at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley. In response, the eSafety Commissioner obtained an interim legal injunction against X, with potential fines of $550,000 per day for non-compliance.

Despite Meta’s compliance, X announced its intention to legally contest the injunction. The eSafety Commissioner argued that X’s geoblocking measures were insufficient to comply with the law, as the content remained accessible via virtual private networks.

The legal battle has drawn attention to concerns about censorship and government control over online content.

Figures like Daniel Wild have criticised the eSafety Commissioner’s actions, accusing her of ideological censorship. Musk echoed these concerns, warning against the precedent of countries controlling internet content globally.

While the government maintains its stance on enforcing Australian law, voices within conservative circles have rallied behind Musk. Senator Matt Canavan dismissed the government’s response as “confected outrage,” while others accused officials of using the incident to tighten control over online platforms.

As the debate intensifies, calls for stricter penalties on tech companies continue to grow from the media and politicians.

Freedom is a dumb concept, right?

Rebel News reporter Avi Yemini set the record straight on misconceptions surrounding the ban of footage depicting stabbing attacks in a recent conversation with 3AW Mornings host Tom Elliot. 

Contrary to claims made by a purported ‘cyber safety’ expert, Susan McLean, the ban was not due to it being designated as a ‘terror’ incident.

“It’s not Julie Inman Grant going ‘hey get this (taken) down I don’t like it”,” she claimed in defence of Australia’s eSafety Commissioner.

Avi clarified that the rationale behind the ban, as communicated by Twitter’s legal team to Rebel News, was the perceived level of violence in the footage of, not just the stabbing attack on Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, but the stabbing incident at Bondi Junction as well – which was not declared a ‘terror’ incident.

He highlighted that Inman Grant, and the government were driving forces behind the video’s removal, noting that while the footage was undoubtedly distressing, it did not depict extreme levels of violence compared to other content freely available on the internet.

Australian politicians have specifically claimed the footage was too ‘distressing’ for Australians to be allowed to see for themselves with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also using the buzzwords ‘misinformation’ and ‘disinformation’ to attack social media users.

“We know, I think overwhelmingly, Australians want misinformation and disinformation to stop,” he told reporters in Mackay.

“This isn’t about freedom of expression, this is about the dangerous implications that can occur when things that are simply not true, that everyone knows is not true, are replicated and weaponised in order to cause division and in this case to promote negative statements and potentially to just inflame what was a very difficult situation and social media has a social responsibility.”

Obama’s Passover Message Adds Palestinians Into the Story; Omits Hostages

Former President Barack Obama used a Passover message on Monday to work Palestinians into the Jewish holiday, calling for empathy for those suffering in “Israel and Gaza,” and for solidarity with “people of all religions.”

Obama’s equivocation obscured the fact that Palestinian terrorists continue to hold 133 Israeli hostages. He failed, in fact, to mention the hostages, instead saying that people should “remember everyone who is unable to celebrate the holiday with their loved ones.” He also failed to mention the ongoing wave of antisemitism on college campuses and in Democrat-run cities, saying that “people of all religions … deserve to feel safe and secure” wherever they are.

Obama also botched the meaning of the Passover holiday, which is not about “resilience, redemption, and renewal,” but specifically about freedom — the freedom of the Israelite slaves who were liberated in the Exodus from Egypt.

Like “hostages” and “antisemitism,” the word “freedom” did not appear in Obama’s message. He also neglected the fact that for many Jews, the freedom of the hostages, many of whom are slaves, is a major Passover theme this year.

Obama initially supported Israel unequivocally after Hamas started the war with its terror attack on October 7. After pressure from left-wing activists — and before Israel had entered Gaza — he backtracked and began to equivocate.

No matter how the political wind blows, Hussein Obama stands with his Muslim brothers.

The Islamist government of Qatar confirmed on Tuesday that it is open to continuing to host the leadership of the jihadist terror organization Hamas as long as doing so is “useful and positive.”

Qatar has offered safe haven and extravagant hotel lodgings to Hamas’s most senior leaders since 2012. While Hamas is the government of the disputed Gaza Strip, its top “political” leaders live in Doha. Ismail Haniyeh, the top Hamas “political” leader, is believed to be worth over $4 billion and he and his family often show off their wealth.

“He [Haniyeh] and his associates have been photographed flying in private jets, enjoying fine dining, and attending international sporting events,” the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD) observed in January.

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari was responding on Tuesday to questions about other senior leaders in Doha expressing frustration with the lack of progress in Qatari-hosted talks between Hamas and the government of Israel.
