Sri Lanka shaken by religious Muslim violence

Police use tear gas and enforce curfew in two coastal towns to end fighting between Muslims and Buddhists.

Sri Lankan police have fired tear gas and enforced a curfew in two coastal towns popular with tourists in an attempt to end clashes between Muslims and Buddhists that threatens to spark wider religious violence.

The police said on Sunday they were widening a curfew in Alutgama, to the neighbouring town Beruwala, a predominantly Muslim area, after violence threatened to take hold in the region.

According to the AFP news agency, the two groups attacked each other with stones in fighting over the weekend – the latest in a series of religious clashes to hit the island nation.

A police spokesman said trouble began when a group led by Buddhist monks tried to march in an area with a sizeable population of Muslims, who are a minority in the mainly Buddhist country.

“The curfew was declared to bring the situation under control,” he said. “The curfew was extended to a neighbouring area to prevent an escalation of clashes.”

“Several Muslim-owned shops have been burned and homes attacked,” a resident in Beruwala told AFP.

“Some Buddhists are deliberately targeting Muslims. But unfortunately police have not been able to protect the minorities,” Hilmy Ahmed, spokesperson of Muslim Council of Sri Lanka, told Al Jazeera.

The deputy head of the madrasa tells her: “We are educating the students in the Quran, and in the Quran it is written that it is every Muslim’s obligation to wage jihad. All we are telling them is what is in the Quran. Then it is up to them to go to jihad.” We are constantly told that the vast majority of Muslims rejects this understanding of the Qur’an and jihad. It would be refreshing if one of them would be so kind as to explain exactly how the deputy head of the madrasa is misunderstanding the Qur’an and jihad, and teaching his students to do so. But even in the absence of that, it is noteworthy that these Misunderstanders of Islam, airily dismissed as not even being Muslim at all by many Muslims in the West (I recently ran into a prominent U.S. Muslim outside Penn Station in New York; he insisted to me repeatedly in the course of our conversation that the 9/11 hijackers were “not Muslims”), ground their jihad activities squarely in the Qur’an. Gruesome photos posted online Sunday by an Al Qaeda splinter group show the summary executions of dozens of captive Iraqi soldiers in the group’s attack on a city in central Iraq and are believed to be authentic, military officials have acknowledged.

The release of the images by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, came amid violence elsewhere in Iraq. A string of explosions rocked Badghad Sunday, killing at least 15, according to the Associated Press. Earlier in the day, Agence France-Presse reported six people were killed when a recruitment center in central Iraq for volunteer fighters was hit by mortar rounds.

Wissam Haddad, the head of Sydney’s al-Risalah Islamic Centre, sums up local reaction to Iraq’s bloodshed:

Two Muslims from a well-known Muslim Brotherhood front group, ISNA, say a parking restriction in the city of Mississauga that’s in effect during Friday prayer services discriminates against Muslims and they’re asking the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario to back their claim.

National Post  Salman Khalid, 32, is an emergency physician at a hospital about half an hour from the ISNA Canada Centre, a mosque he and his family have always attended in Mississauga, west of Toronto. In May 2012, he was given a ticket for parking on nearby Finfar Court rather than the mosque’s parking lot, while attending Friday prayer services.

The bylaw states that parking is prohibited on the side street, approximately one block from the mosque, between 12-3 p.m. on Fridays. But this coincides with the mosque’s hours of prayer service on Islam’s holiest day of the week, according to Salman’s father, Muhammad. Mr. Khalid and his son allege the parking bylaw is discriminatory and violates the Ontario Human Rights Code.
