In Iraq we have Islamist extremists – led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant – slaughtering Shiites, attacking the Iraqi democracy and claiming a new Islamic Sunni state in the north of Iraq and Syria.

Who does Aly blame? The West:

We haven’t yet come to terms with just how much damage the invasion of Iraq has done. It’s likely we won’t fully know for decades. But it’s clear that the blowback is already under way…

Predictably, Aly does not even mention a more telling fact: that the US pulled out prematurely from Iraq in 2011, leaving a vacuum that terrorists now fill. Nor does he mention that the regime the West toppled in 2003 was one of the most brutal known, responsible for starting two wars and a genocide. If he believes that regime should have been left in place he should say so explicitly and reckon what that would have cost in more lives lost.

And what words never pass his lips in this article?  Yes, “Islam” and “Muslim”.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) found the video of the speech that was broadcast on Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV on June 2 and posted translated excerpts.

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham has set out a list of rules for residents of Mosul as it seeks to impose its Islamist rules on Iraq’s second city.

Referring to the area by its ancient name, Nineveh, the group says it has a clear set of instructions for the remaining occupants of the city and surrounding area.

Firstly it tells “anyone who is asking,” who its members are and what it is about: “We are soldiers of Islam and we’ve taken on our responsibility to bring back glory of the Islamic Caliphate.”

All Muslims in the city have bee instructed to attend mosque for the five daily prayers.

See? There is no compulsion in religion. Only greasy Islamophobes would dream up something that crazy!

A senior Saudi sheik, however, has made it clear that any enthusiasm for the game expressed by Muslims is a moral, social and public abomination.

According to the Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI, ‘Abd Al-Rahman Al Barrak has “proclaimed that football (soccer) is an abomination that causes people to waste their time, to adopt the depraved customs of the enemies of Islam, and to glorify ‘infidel’ football players.”

MEMRI monitors publications and broadcasts from the hotbeds of Middle East unrest and translates and analyzes them.

The “fatwa,” or religious ruling or edict, against soccer was posted on his website at albarrak.islamlight.net, MEMRI said.
