Carter: Iran No Threat to Israel Now

ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday that it was almost inconceivable that Iran would “commit suicide” by launching missiles at Israel.

Speaking at Emory University, Carter, who brokered the 1979 Camp David peace accord between Israel and Egypt, said Israel’s superior military power and distance from Iran likely are enough to discourage an actual attack.

“Iran is quite distant from Israel,” said Carter, 83. “I think it would be almost inconceivable that Iran would commit suicide by launching one or two missiles of any kind against the nation of Israel.”

Iran’s deputy air force commander said Wednesday that Israel is within range of Iran’s medium-range missiles and bombers and that Tehran would strike back if Israel “makes a silly mistake.”

The White House said the comments almost sound geared toward provoking a fight and Israeli officials said they take the threats seriously.

Carter did not dismiss the idea that Iran might want to attack Israel, noting Iran’s refusal to suspend uranium enrichment production despite two United Nations resolutions imposing sanctions on the country. Tehran insists its nuclear program is aimed at producing energy for civilian use but the U.S., its European allies and many others fear the program’s real aim is to produce nuclear weapons.

“Obviously, we all hope we can do whatever we can to keep Iran from becoming a nuclear power,” Carter said.

Carter said unease between Israel and Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank is a far greater threat to Israel’s security than Iran. He criticized the Bush administration for not doing enough to broker peace in the region.

Bibi confirms attack on Syria

OPPOSITION leader Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed yesterday that Israel had carried out an air attack against a site deep inside Syria two weeks ago, breaking a 14-day Israeli silence on the strike.

“I was party to this matter, I must say, from the first minute and I gave it my backing,” Mr Netanyahu, known in his country as Bibi, said in an interview on Israeli television. “It is still too early to discuss this subject.”

Mr Netanyahu’s remark, the first confirmation of the strike by an Israeli leader, was condemned by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office, which has thus far declined to comment on Syrian reports of an attack.

Syria first reported an Israeli air incursion two weeks ago but offered few details.

According to reports, the attack was carried out against a site that Israeli intelligence believes is being equipped for nuclear development by North Korea.

The Israelis had reportedly tracked a ship bearing cargo from North Korea to a Syrian port and monitored the cargo’s transfer to the site, which was attacked a few days later, on September 6.

Neither the precise nature of the cargo nor the effect of the air attack has been revealed.

An American official said Israel had been monitoring the site, at al-Safir, for some time before the arrival of the North Korean shipment.

Jane’s Defence Weekly, a respected British journal, reported yesterday that an explosion in a Syrian military installation near Aleppo on July 26 killed 15 Syrian soldiers and dozens of Iranian weapons engineers.

According to Jane’s, a joint Syrian-Iranian project at the installation was under way to fit chemical warheads to short-range ballistic missiles.

Syria’s state news agency, SANA, said the blast was caused by high summer temperatures, which set off high-explosive materials at a weapons depot.

But Jane’s quoted Syrian defence sources as saying the explosion took place during a test to fit a Scud-C missile with a mustard-gas warhead.

“The blast dispersed chemical agents (including VX and Sarin nerve agents and mustard blister agents) across the storage facility and outside,” it reported.

Public broadcaster Israel Radio said Israel rejected an approach from Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, through a “mediator,” to a senior Israeli defense official before the Israeli security cabinet declared Gaza an “enemy entity” on Wednesday.

The Palestinian source told Reuters that Hamas, which seized control of Gaza in June, had sought talks with Deputy defense Minister Matan Vilnai, offering to rein in rocket fire into Israel in return for an easing of Israeli border controls.

The survey was carried out by students in medicine in 12 wilayas (provinces) of the country between November 2006 and April 2007. From the questioned families, 47% have less than three children, 37% between four and seven and 17% have more than seven children. According to the survey, in Algiers the consanguinity rate is 29.5%, while the Oran province (400km west from Algiers) is the one with the lowest rate of consanguinity, at 18.5%. After Tebessa, among the regions where the marriage between members of the same family is still of common use, there are the Ghardaia Oasis, 600km south from Algiers, with 56%, but also many cities of Kabylie, such as Bejaia (250km east from the capital) with 50.6%, Boumerdes and Bouira (eastern Algeria) with some 42%. New York Rep. Peter King, a prominent House Republican, said there are “too many mosques in this country” in a recent interview with Politico.

“There are too many people sympathetic to radical Islam,” King said. “We should be looking at them more carefully and finding out how we can infiltrate them.”

King is the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee. And as an outspoken advocate of strong anti-terror measures, he has been unafraid to ruffle some feathers in his drive to protect the homeland.

Bali bomber now campaigns to stop terrorism

One of the Bali bombers responsible for the deaths of more than 200 people in 2002 is trying to help Indonesia’s police catch terrorists.

Ali Imron drove the van that blew Bali’s Sari Club apart in 2002 but he has always been the repentant bomber and since 2004 he has assisted Indonesia’s police with their hunt for terrorists.

Now, allowed out of prison for an exclusive interview with ABC Radio National’s Background Briefing program, Imron said he is making tapes to spread his anti-terrorism message.

Letting him speak out is just one part of Indonesia’s ground-breaking and controversial counter-terrorism strategy.

The flying pigs of Indonesia

Inspired by an extreme understanding of his faith, Imron played a critical role in the first Bali bombings that ripped apart the Sari Club and Paddy’s Bar on October 12, 2002, killing 88 Australians.

“After we assembled the Sari Club bomb and loaded it onto the van, I installed the detonator as well as the detonators for the vest bomb and the for the US consulate bomb,” he explained through an interpreter.

“I then taught the two suicide bombers how to trigger the explosions.

“I was the one who delivered the US consulate bomb to its destination and I ended up driving the van to the Sari club after discovering the suicide bombers couldn’t drive, handing over the vehicle at the last moment.”

Unlike his brothers, Imron escaped the death penalty because he showed remorse for his actions.

“I will continue to ask for forgiveness from the victims and their families, from anyone affected by violence in which I was involved,” he said.

“I will never stop asking for forgiveness.”

Out of jail

It would be inconceivable in Australia, but Indonesia has let Imron out of jail to tell his story to Background Briefing.

Indonesian police say he is now a potent force for counter-terrorism, and they want Australia to know how Imron is working to stop further violence.

In a Jakarta hotel room, flanked by a prison guard, Imron was calm and quietly focused as he explained his new form of jihad.

“I help police because I know what the terrorists think,” he said.

“I know how they will try to get their weapons and explosives. I know what kind of place they will target for what kind of action and I know how they would carry that out.

“I know how to hide from the police on the run, how the terrorists recruit new members and who is most vulnerable to the radical message.

“I am giving all this information to police so I can stop violence and terrorism.”

It might be cold comfort for his victims and their families, but now Imron is revealing trade secrets of terror group Jemaah Islamiah.

Further, he claims to have considerable influence outside prison.

He says students at his family’s Islamic boarding school would become suicide bombers if he asked them to. Instead, Imron sends them the opposite message.

“Since I was jailed in Bali, I’ve been writing a book and other materials about my ideas,” he said.

“Also every time my family or friends visit me, or I send a message to others outside prison, I always say it was a mistake to carry out the bombings. It was the wrong kind of jihad.”

Part of Imron’s new type of jihad, or spiritual struggle in God’s name, is sending cassettes to his family’s east Java school. But he has some competition: his unrepentant brother and fellow bomber, Ali Ghufron, who is known as Mukhlas.

Mukhlas is on death row and is also hard at work making cassettes for the al-Islam school, but urging the students to become terrorists.

Imron says it is a battle for influence.

“Mukhlas and I both send letters and cassettes to al-Islam,” he said.

“It’s a tough thing to deal with personally and tough for the teachers there because I ask the students to follow my example while Mukhlas calls them to carry out violent jihad.

“We will have to wait and see who wins this battle for influence.”

Imron says he has had some success in dissuading people from violent forms of jihad.

“Yes, there are success stories, thank God,” he said.

“None of my students or former students are involved in terrorism and none of my close friends are involved. But there’s more to do and I’ll keep working to stop terrorism.”

Attorneys say views express emotion over Palestinian conflict

Defense attorneys on Tuesday said that their clients’ radical views – caught on tape and presented to jurors during the Holy Land Foundation terrorism finance trial – were rooted in their deep feelings over the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and are protected by free speech rights.

Greg Westfall, attorney for defendant Abdulrahman Odeh, on Tuesday tried to explain a 1995 phone call his client made to co-defendant Mohammad El-Mezain to tell him “a beautiful operation just took place,” when a Hamas suicide bomber killed 18 Israelis. “May it be good, God’s willing,” Mr. El-Mezain replied.

Mr. Westfall told jurors during closing arguments to remember that the phone call was made only a year after Baruch Goldstein, an American-born Jewish settler, killed 29 Muslim worshippers in Hebron.

The attack, described as the worst by Jewish extremists against Palestinians, set off riots and suicide bombings.

“I have no experience parallel to what it’s like to be a Palestinian,” said Mr. Westfall of Fort Worth.

Video Surfaces of Foreign Jihadis Decapitating Serb Soldier, Using Head as Soccer Ball..

A Bosnian TV station has broadcast part of an alleged new video apparently showing gruesome crimes perpetrated againt Bosnian Serbs by a unit of Muslim fighters during Bosnia’s 1992-1995 civil war.

The footage, broadcast by BN TV apparently shows the ‘El Mujahadid’ unit “sharpening axes” which they later allegedly used to behead a Bosnian Serb soldier.

The video also reportedly shows footage of the mujahadeen in playing football using a decapitated head instead of a ball, Serbian news agency Tanjug reported.

It contains chilling scenes showing mutilated corpses mujahadeen tying up and abuse prisoners of war. A mujahadeen is heard saying: “They call us terrorists. We are terrorists and we will destroy all the enemies of Allah.”

The El Mujahid was a unit consisting of fighters from Muslim countries, who, as they say on the tape, came to Bosnia to “fight for Allah.”

Amman, 18 Sept. (AKI) – Jordan has forced several restaurants with international links to close for Ramadan because it would “violate the sanctity” of the month.

Authorities said serving daily meals is contrary to a directive from the interior ministry that has blocked the opening of restaurants during daylight hours during the month of fasting.

Even though Jordan has a Christian minority of around 5 per cent and Ramadan coincides with the beginning of the autumn tourism season, the interior ministry has decided to close restaurants such as McDonald’s and Burger King.

Authorities in Amman have made it known that no-one will be permitted to violate the sanctity of the month.

Jordanian laws only allow those restaurants that cater for tourists to supply their services during Ramadan since they are under the supervision of the tourism ministry and not the province.

While the government of Amman initially decided to authorise hotels – with a three to five star classification – to sell alcoholic beverages and to permit pubs and discotecques to open nightly during Ramadan while in the past it was banned.

But this decision has provoked an outcry from Islamist organisations and they have pressed the interior ministry to cancel the new decree and renew the old one.

ANKARA (Reuters) – Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was quoted in the Financial Times on Wednesday as saying he wanted to lift the ban on the Islamic headscarf in universities as part of a planned constitutional overhaul.
The remarks by Erdogan, whose Islamist-rooted AK Party won a new five-year mandate in July elections, could reignite tensions with Turkey’s powerful secular elite, including army generals, which suspects him of wanting to boost the role of religion.

“The right to higher education cannot be restricted because of what a girl wears. There is no such problem in Western societies but there is a problem in Turkey and I believe it is the first duty of those in politics to solve the problem,” he told the FT in an interview in Ankara.

The secularists regard the headscarf as a symbolic threat to Turkey’s separation of state and religion. They also fear any lifting of the ban would put social pressure on uncovered women to start wearing the headscarf in overwhelmingly Muslim Turkey.

French Left Resists Sarkozy’s Immigration Crackdown

The immigration debate is hotting up in France, as left-wing politicians and human rights groups face off against the government’s plans for tougher immigration laws, including DNA tests. Now eight Paris mayors say they won’t cooperate with implementing Sarkozy’s deportation targets.

The French goverment is toughening up its immigration policies, with plans to introduce DNA tests for prospective immigrants and demands that local officals meet their deportation targets. But the left is hitting back, with eight Paris mayors saying they won’t cooperate and human rights groups accusing the government of treating immigrants as “disposable objects” instead of human beings.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy campaigned on a law and order platform, which included a pledge to crack down on illegal immigration and make it harder for foreigners to make France their home. His government is now considering introducing DNA tests for prospective immigrants, while his Immigration Minister Brice Hortefeux (more…) has told local prefects they are not doing enough to hit the president’s deportation targets.

Sarkozy had promised to expel 25,000 illegal immigrants from France by the end of 2007. But Hortefeux, who is head of the newly created Ministry of Immigration and National Identity, is struggling to meet the target, with only 11,000 having been shown the door in the first seven months of the year. “I want numbers!” Sarkozy told the minister in a meeting last month, according to Le Point magazine. “It’s a campaign commitment. The French are expecting this from me,” he was reported as saying.

But the first rumbles of rebellion are emerging. On Thursday, eight mayors in the Paris region lashed out at government pressure to expel more immigrants, a day after Hortefeux berated 19 regional officials for falling short of the targets.

In an open letter to the minister, the left-wing mayors said: “We remind you that we are doing our duty as citizens to protect inhabitants who live, work and study in our community,” they declared. “We are not at your orders. … Your obsessive vision of numbers … is more condemnable because human beings are involved.”

Human rights groups have also denounced the government for emphasizing the volume of expulsions. Anti-racism group MRAP said that the deportation drive was turning immigrants into “disposable objects.” Pierre Henry, director-general of the non-governmental organization France, Land of Asylum, told the radio station Europe-1 that he accepted that “the state has the right to say who can come in, who leaves and how.” But, he said, “The problem is when expulsion policy becomes the alpha and omega of migration policy.”

Tensions have also been raised after a parliamentary commission on Wednesday approved introducing DNA tests for family members of immigrants already in France. The measure will now be included in a sweeping immigration law to be debated by parliament next week, aimed at toughening visa requirements. “No subject should be taboo,” Hortefeux told reporters on Thursday.
Serge Blisko, a Socialist deputy of the National Assembly, pointed out that many countries lack DNA testing facilities and warned that it could lead to a “genetic screening” of foreigners. Bertrand Pancher, a member of Sarkozy’s Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), voiced concerns about how adopted children would be affected.

France’s League for Human Rights noted that the tests cost several hundred euros and and would be beyond the means of most applicants from poor countries, so that the measure would effectively “filter” poorer immigrants. It also argued that the measure is not constitutional, as the French civil code forbids DNA tests for anything other than scientific or medical purposes.

Rice: U.S. ‘Will Not Abandon Innocent Palestinians in Gaza’

JERUSALEM — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday the United States “will not abandon the innocent Palestinians in Gaza,” shortly after Israel declared the territory to be an enemy entity in order to cut off power and fuel supplies to the coastal strip.

At the same time, Rice said Gaza, ruled by the Islamic militant Hamas group, “is a hostile entity to us as well.”

Pope Benedict XVI refused to meet US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in August, saying he was on holiday, an Italian newspaper reported Wednesday.
Rice “made it known to the Vatican that she absolutely had to meet the pope” to boost her diplomatic “credit” ahead of a trip to the Middle East, the Corriere della Sera daily reported without citing its sources.

She was hoping to meet the pontiff at his summer residence of Castel Gandolfo at the beginning of August, it said.

Arab States: Peace with Israel will not help USA in Iraq, Iran

A pet theory of the US State Department is that solving the Israeli – Palestininian conflict will magically solve the Israeli-Arab conflict, and that solving both will even more magically solve all the problems of the Middle East, make Wahhabi Sheikhs fall in love with democracy and reduce the price of oil to about 25 cents a barrel. Bikinis will replace Hijabs in Iran, the Persian Gulf will turn into grade A crude oil, the lion will lie down the lamb, and a little assistant undersecretary of state for Middle East Affairs shall lead them.

The upcoming summit conference on the Middle East was designed according to those percepts: the United States would show “progress” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Arabs in turn would help the United States extricate itself from Iraq. The particular idea that the Jews are at fault for the problems of the United States in Iraq was due to the Iraq Study Group report, where it was injected as a last minute afterthought by Ray Close.

There is no longer any need for agents of the World Zionist Conspiracy, A.K.A. “Israel Lobby” to explain that this idea is a fantasy. The idea was just shot down by the Arabs. According to an AFP article:

Pro-Western Gulf Arab states do not want the Middle East peace conference called by Washington to be aimed at helping get it out of “the Iraqi impasse,” the oil-rich bloc’s chief said on Tuesday.

Gulf Cooperation Council member states “welcome any attempt to reach a just and comprehensive solution of the Palestinian issue and settle the Arab-Israeli conflict,” Abdulrahman al-Attiyah said in remarks released at
GCC headquarters in Riyadh.

He said he hoped the proposed conference will address core issues and will “not be aimed at linking movement in the Middle East peace process to developments in Iraq in a bid to attract Arab states to a conference whose real goal is to help (the US) get out of the Iraqi impasse.”

Attiyah did not elaborate on his suggestion that Gulf monarchies, which have close ties with the United States, fear Washington might use the conference to ease its difficulties in war-torn Iraq, where the continuing insurgency is fueling mounting domestic criticism.

They appear in his book “The Terror Presidency,” hailed as a criticism of the Bush administration’s legal policies, which in part it is. Believing that some of his predecessor’s opinions, particularly two on interrogation techniques, were “deeply flawed,” he reversed them. He argues that the administration would have ended up with more latitude in fighting terrorism if it had worked with Congress to get legislation, even if those laws would not have been as expansive as the administration wanted. It’s a serious argument, and he also presents fairly, I think, the opposing view that such restrictions would make it harder to protect the American people.

Tortured maid in serious condition after amputation of her limbs

Riyadh: An Indonesian housemaid is in serious condition following amputation of both her hands and feet after a month-long torture by her employers, said a member of the Saudi National Society for Human Rights.

Dr Nora Al Jumaih, member of the monitoring and follow-up committee at the Saudi National Society for Human Rights (NSHR), said in press statements yesterday that she would meet the chairman of the monitoring committee at NSHR to brief him on the case of the Indonesian maid.

She added that a report on the condition of the Indonesian housemaid was prepared and will be handed over to NSHR.

The Indonesian housemaid, whose name was not given, was earlier admitted to the Riyadh Medical Complex, popularly known as Shimaisy Hospital, after being severely beaten for almost one month by her employers, a Saudi man and his wife. The doctors in hospital decided to amputate her hands and feet because of gangrene.

Severely beaten

Dr Nora, who visited the Indonesian housemaid in hospital, noted that she was in poor health.

“It is clear that the woman was severely beaten after being tied up in the [courtyard of the house] under the sun for almost one month and was beaten with iron rods. Her teeth were knocked out and her lips were cut,” the NSHR member pointed out.

Dr Nora called for maximum punishment of the employer and his wife.

“Cases of housemaids are the most complicated to deal with as this category does not know of a society that can help them and restore their rights,” she said.

“There should be collaboration between hospital officials and the press to make such cases known to the public and therefore the Human Rights Society would know about them,” she added. Dr Nora noted that NSHR would follow up the case with the party assigned to question the employer and his wife.
