‘Interfaith Dialogue clears up misconceptions about Islam!’

“The goal, said Dr. Iqbal, is to persuade people of other religions to try to understand Islam and ‘build on our similarities rather than exploiting minor differences and promoting tension and hatred.'” It all sounds so very high-minded, and pre-emptively smears those who might point out that Dr. Iqbal and his friends have been somewhat less than forthcoming about certain unpleasant aspects of Islam, particularly as touching upon jihad and Islamic supremacism — why, such people are just “promoting tension and hatred.”

It’s very skillfully done, really, and not just in Youngstown, Ohio. Is it “promoting tension and hatred” to point out that Islam has a martial and supremacist tradition going back to the Qur’an and Muhammad, and that jihadists use that tradition today to gain recruits among peaceful Muslims? CAIR and others would have you think so, and have successfully cowed the mainstream media into thinking so too — with both liberal and conservative spokesmen fearing to discuss the connections between Islam and violence, for fear of offending Muslims and being seen as “promoting tension and hatred.”

But the truth is just the truth. It is not bigoted or multicultural or blue or green, it is just reality. The truth does not become false because some people say it is bigoted. If it is true that Islam has core traditions of violence and supremacism, and that the jihadists use them to promote violence, then it does no favor to peaceful Muslims to pretend that they don’t exist. Rather, it becomes all the more urgent to point them out, so as to aid those peaceful Muslims in genuine efforts at Islamic reform. You cannot reform what you are pretending does not need reform.

And if Dr. Iqbal’s clarification of misconceptions in turn needs clarification and completion itself, is it an “promoting tension and hatred” to provide that clarification and completion? I submit that it is not.

Mosque Tour Gets Questions Answered

By WILLIAM K. ALCORN

VINDICATOR STAFF WRITER

YOUNGSTOWN — Muslims are just like anybody else, said Saeeda Yasmin Ghani, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Youngstown.
Indeed, a major purpose of a public open house Saturday at the Masjid Al-Khair mosque on Homewood Avenue was to demonstrate to the community the similarities between Muslims and people who belong to other religions.

We want the community at large to be aware that the Muslim community exists here and has for 40 years,” Ghani said.

“We are peace-loving and ask that people not condemn the whole Muslim nation because of a few fanatics,” she said as the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., nears.

“That was a horrendous act … for which there was no justification,” Ghani said.

* Good. The whole Muslim nation shouldn’t be condemned because of a few fanatics. But what is the whole Muslim nation doing to stop more Muslims from joining those fanatics? Can the whole Muslim nation do this without confronting the jihad ideology proffered to peaceful Muslims around the world by those few fanatics? Also, what is the meaning of this locution, “the whole Muslim nation”? If Islam is a nation, what is its relationship, or the relationship of the citizens of that nation, to the United States and United States citizenship?

There are major misconceptions about Islam, one of which is that people see it as a strange religion, when it really is a continuation of Judaism and Christianity. There are many similarities, said Dr. Khalid Iqbal, who conducted tours of the mosque during the open house.
* Dr. Iqbal does not seem to have informed his listeners that Islam is not solely a “continuation” of Judaism and Christianity, but a replacement and repudiation of them, since only “unbelievers” believe in the divinity of Christ (Qur’an 5:17) and both Jews and Christians are accursed of Allah (Qur’an 9:30).

I suspect that Dr. Iqbal and others would accuse me of “promoting tension and hatred” by mentioning these things, but nota bene: they are in the Qur’an, and those verses are not rejected or abrogated; they form part of core, mainstream Muslim belief about Judaism and Christianity. I didn’t put these things in the Qur’an, or make them part of mainstream Muslim belief. If Dr. Iqbal really wants to clear up misconceptions, why doesn’t he deal realistically with the existence of such material in the Qur’an and Islamic tradition, showing why its presence doesn’t preclude respect for non-Muslims as human beings? If he discussed it and offered some explanation, certainly he would have a much stronger claim to be clearing up misconceptions fully and honestly.

Major points
A major point of discussion is whether Muslim women are oppressed by the religion.

To the contrary, said Dr. Iqbal, a pediatrician. Muslim women had rights long before other religions even thought about it, such as the right to own property and to divorce.

Muslim women hold important jobs in the worlds of work and politics, such as Ghani, who leads the Youngstown Muslim community, Dr. Iqbal said.

“Certainly not,” said Ghani, when asked if Islam oppresses women.

Ghani, administrative director of the laboratory at St. Elizabeth Health Center, said Islam respects women. In areas where women are not respected — for instance, in Saudi Arabia, they are not permitted to drive — it is the culture, not the religion, she said.

Modesty is the reason men and women do not pray together in the kneeling prostrated position, Dr. Iqbal said. In the Masjid Al-Khair mosque, the women’s’ prayer area is separate from the men’s. In other temples, however, they may pray in the same room side by side, but not one behind the other, he said.

* There doesn’t seem to have been any mention of Qur’an 4:34, the notorious “wife-beating” verse, or 2:282, which values a woman’s testimony as half that of a man, or the many other passages which do foster the oppression of women. Here again: is it “promoting tension and hatred” to point out that they exist, and that Muslims read them and take them to heart, or is it a necessary component of any actual dialogue?

Another major misconception is that Muslims use violence to get their way, Dr. Iqbal said.
He said Muslims believe so strongly in social justice and fairness and equality between human beings that when that belief cannot be accomplished through peaceful means, the use of force is justified.

* Wordplay. What he means by ‘justice & fairness’ is according to the sharia and the Koran, not according to infidel, or ‘man-made’ law.. (SY)

For example, when Sadaam Hussein of Iraq invaded Kuwait, it became necessary to use force to get him out. Islam, in general, supported that effort in the first Gulf War, he said.

But, when it comes to matters of belief and religion, Islam does not encourage violence, Dr. Iqbal said.
* To put it mildly: He is lying:
There are so many verses of the Qur’an that spring immediately to mind as encouraging violence — 8:12, 9:5, 9:29, 47:4, 2:190-193, 8:60, etc. etc. etc. — that this does seem, I’m sorry to say, to be staggeringly disingenuous. Also, to say that it is a “major misconception” that “Muslims use violence to get their way” is simply false: Muslims do use violence to get their way — not all Muslims, to be sure, but there have been ten-thousand violent jihad attacks around the world since 9/11, and every one was an example of a Muslim using violence to get his way. Maybe they were all misusing Islam — it would be refreshing if Dr. Iqbal had explained to his audience how they are misusing it, and what efforts he and his companions are making to teach against this interpretation among their fellow Muslims.

Firsthand knowledge
Among the non-Muslim visitors at the open house were friends, Nancy Schulz of Canfield and Cathy Reinard of Youngstown, and Nancy’s daughter, Erin Kriss of Austintown.

“After all the stuff you hear and read [about Muslims], we wanted to come and learn for ourselves,” Schulz said.

* Buy a book. Log on to the internet. The last place you wanna go to learn about Islam is the mosque!

“It makes sense,” said Kriss, after learning why Muslim men and women pray separately. She found it amazing that the Quran, the Muslim’s holy book, has never changed, while there are several versions of the Christian Bible.

* This is da’wa, not fact. There are actually several versions of the Qur’an still extant (see Toby Lester’s 1999 Atlantic Monthly article for details), and the Bible variants are textual minutiae, not the doctrinal upheaval that traditional Islam envisions: that the early Christians altered their Scriptures to deify Jesus and remove references to Muhammad. That Islamic faith claims about the Qur’an and the Bible would be offered on this “outreach” night as fact — and swallowed by the credulous and uninformed — also suggests that the intent here was not openly to explain misconceptions in a spirit of peaceful coexistence, but something else altogether.

However, she thinks the explanation that Muslim women are treated equally “falls a little short,” however.
“Muslim men put women on a pedestal and think they are doing something good, but maybe they are really limiting them,” Reinard said….

Hmmm. Maybe.

The goal, said Dr. Iqbal, is to persuade people of other religions to try to understand Islam and “build on our similarities rather than exploiting minor differences and promoting tension and hatred.”
* I would be all for people of other religions understanding Islam. It would be helpful in that understanding if presentations like this one were a bit more forthcoming about the reasons why such presentations have to be held in the first place.

FORMER DETAINEES ABUSED BACK HOME

‘I’d Rather Return to Guantanamo’

From Spiegel (of course)

0102088259000.jpg
When two Tunisian men were sent home after five years in Guantanamo, they thought they would be free. Instead, they faced imprisonment, abuse, threats and solitary confinement. Now they say things were better back in the US prison camp.

* Does your heart bleed already? Read on:

Many of the detainees sitting in Guantanamo Bay hail from countries with a terrible record of torturing and abusing prisoners. While they may want to see an end to their ordeal in the US prison camp, they also have reason to dread the treatment they could face back home.
According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), the US government is not doing enough to ensure that prisoners sent back home are not subjected to ill treatment, despite diplomatic assurances from their home countries. The US is continuing to repatriate prisoners, sending home 16 Saudis on Thursday. But in their haste to reduce the numbers at Guantanamo, it seems they are being less than thorough in ensuring that the former prisoners are not mistreated.

In its “Ill-fated Homecomings” report released on Wednesday, HRW focuses on two Tunisian men, Abdullah al-Hajji Ben Amor and Lofti Lagha, who were released from Guantanamo six weeks ago and are now sitting in jail in Tunisia. The researchers did not have access to the prisoners but spoke to their families and their lawyer, Samir Ben Amor.

The two Tunisians were sent home on June 18 and, according to HRW, they had no idea that they would be facing further imprisonment. They now say that if they had known, they would have fought the transfer.

* Hollywood would have been better, but they couldn’t find a producer quick enough..

The two men were held at the military camp in Cuba for five years, without being charged with any crimes, and Lagha was never represented by a lawyer during that time. Rather than facing freedom when they finally got home, the two men were taken directly into custody and say they were threatened, abused and put in solitary confinement. They now claim things are so bad that they would rather be back in Guantanamo — despite Tunisia’s pledge to the US that they would be treated humanely.

* Wow! They must really feel cheated. Imagine: no virgins, no rewards…

Abdullah al-Hajji left Tunisia in 1990 and had no idea that he had been convicted in absentia in 1995 of being a member of a foreign terrorist organization. He was arrested in Pakistan in 2002 and sent to Guantanamo Bay.

* See: he had no idea! The poor bugger is completely innocent!

* Hmmm: what to do, what to do with these poor people! Why don’t we all get naked for another demo and make the US take in the Gitmo crowd as immigrants and make them citizens?

Switzerland Makes Attempt At Self-Preservation, Commies Whine Over Possible Loss Of Muhammedan Electorate

* Special rapporteur on racism, Doudou Diène, himself a dyed in the wool African racist from the UN World Body Cadaver, cries foul:

His Excellency Doudou Diène, warned earlier this year that a “racist and xenophobic dynamic” which used to be the province of the far right is now becoming a regular part of the democratic system in Switzerland.

* If only!

swisssheepl_468×635.jpg

Proposed Swiss immigration laws show ‘rise of new racism and xenophobia’

Proposals for draconian new laws targeting Switzerland’s immigrants have caused concern over the rise of a new racism in the heart of one of the world’s oldest independent democracies.

The Swiss People’s Party (the Schweizerische Volkspartei or SVP), which has the largest number of seats in the Swiss parliament and is a member of the country’s coalition government, is planning the new measures “For More Security”.

With a general election due next month, it has launched a twofold campaign which has caused the UN’s special rapporteur on racism to ask for an official explanation from the government.

* Get stuffed, Doudou! Go and complain to Mugabe, you hypocritical racist creep!

The party has launched a campaign to raise the 100,000 signatures necessary to force a referendum to reintroduce into the penal code a measure to allow judges to deport foreigners who commit serious crimes once they have served their jail sentence.

But far more dramatically, it has announced its intention to lay before parliament a law allowing the entire family of a criminal under the age of 18 to be deported as soon as sentence is passed.

It will be the first such law in Europe since the Nazi practice of Sippenhaft – kin liability – whereby relatives of criminals were held responsible for their crimes and punished equally.

The proposal will be a test case not just for Switzerland but for the whole of Europe, where a division between liberal multiculturalism and a conservative isolationism is opening up in political discourse in many countries, the UK included.

A poster campaign depicting three white sheep standing on the Swiss flag, with one craftily kicking away a black sheep, has been launched – and plastered on to billboards, into newspapers and posted to every home in a direct mailshot.

The poster is, according to the United Nations, the sinister symbol of the rise of a new racism and xenophobia in a country where one in four, like the black sheep in the poster, are now foreign immigrants to this peaceful, prosperous and stable economy with low unemployment and a per capita GDP larger than that of other Western economies.

Zürich has, for the past two years, been named as the city with the best quality of life in the world.

Dr Ulrich Schlüer, the brains bedhind the poster, is a small affable man. But if he speaks softly he wields a big stick. The statistics are clear, he said, foreigners are four times more likely to commit crimes than Swiss nationals.

In a suburb of Zürich, a group of youths between 14 and 18 recently raped a 13-year-old girl,” he said.

“It turned out that all of them were already under investigation for some previous offence. They were all foreigners from the Balkans or Turkey. Their parents said these boys are out of control.

“We say: ‘That’s not acceptable. It’s your job to control them and if you can’t do that you’ll have to leave’. It’s a punishment everyone understands.”

* Right on, doctor Schluer: make them understand. Deportation is the way!

And Islamic law, he says, is incompatible with Switzerland’s legal system.

Rabbi Attacked and Stabbed in the Street in Frankfurt

FRANKFURT (EJP)— A 42-year-old rabbi was attacked and seriously wounded Friday night in the western German city of Frankfurt, by an unknown person who stabbed him, police said.

Rabbin Zalman Gurevitch of the Chabad-Lubavitch community of Frankfurt, was walking home from the synagogue in the street of the city along with two friends when he was attacked by a man who first threatened him before stabbing him in the stomach.

Rabbin Zalman Gurevitch of Chabad-Lubavitch in Frankfurt (1st row, 3d from the L).

Severely wounded, the rabbi could reach a nearby hospital where he was operated and is said to be in “stable condition.”

His days are out of danger but he will have to stay hospitalized until after Roch Hachana, the Jewish New Year, his nephew, Rabbi Mendel Gurewitz from Offenbach, told EJP.

According to the rabbi’s friends, the aggressor, who was accompanied by two women, was apparently coming “from a southern country.” He first shouted “something in Arabic” at the victim, they told police.

When the rabbi asked him what he wanted, the aggressor threatened him in German before stabbing him. After the attack, the aggressor and the two women fled in different directions.

According to police, it was unlikely to be a premeditated aggression.

* One wonders why the police would make such a statement.

The police promised a 2.000-euro reward for any indication allowing the arrest of the culprit.
Roland Koch, Prime Minister of the regional state of Hesse, deplored the stabbing as “a perfidious deed that we can only view with horror and indignation and most strongly condemn.”

He expressed the hope that the aggressor would be quickly arrested.

Olmid Nouripour, the Frankfurt representative of the Green party at the Bundestag, the federal parliament, said: “It is frightening that for Jews in Germany there is still no normality in the everyday life, given the multiculturality of the city of Frankfurt.”

He asked the Muslim community to be stronger involved in the fight against anti-Semitism.

* Fat chance. But perhaps we should rejoice that it wasn’t a Nazi who did it after all?

Or does a German look like this?

Quebec debate over face-covering during vote rouses everyone except Muslims

MONTREAL (CP) — Federal and Quebec political leaders have unanimously blasted an Elections Canada decision to let Muslim women wear traditional face coverings when voting in three federal byelections in Quebec.

Muslims groups say they are mystified about the uproar, saying they never asked for any special treatment.

* Sure. Its a normal thing to wear a burka, right?

Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon said Friday the federal government doesn’t support Election Canada’s decision to allow burkas and niqabs during voting in three federal byelections in the province on Sept. 17.

“We find it doesn’t make any sense,” said Cannon, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Quebec lieutenant.

“As a government and a political party, we do not agree with Elections Canada,” Cannon said in Ottawa.

Premier Jean Charest also said it’s a bad idea.

“For me, it’s a bad decision,” Charest said. “The federal chief returning officer should have done the same thing we did in Quebec, which is that everyone who presents themselves to exercise their right to vote must be clearly identified. For me, it’s as simple as that.”

Muslims, on the other hand, say it won’t be an issue in the three federal byelections in Montreal-area Outremont and rural St-Hyacinthe-Bagot and Roberval-Lac-St-Jean ridings.

Sarah Elgazzar, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations in Montreal, said it’s unlikely many Muslim women will have covered faces when voting.

“We’re talking about a minority of a minority of a minority,” she said. “It’s a very small section of the practising Muslim women, which is already a small enough section of the Muslim community that actually wear the niqab.

* See, nothing to worry about: its only ‘a tiny minority of extremists…’

“I can almost guarantee that in the Outremont riding . . . there won’t be a single woman wearing niqab, so this debate is almost completely and utterly useless.”

* ‘He can guarantee…’ he sez. Who wouldn’t belive a Muslim? After all, Muslims are forbidden to lie by Allah, right? Right????

Update:

Turkish soap opera showing wife as equal called “decadent” and “sinful” in Saudi Arabia

Where it is nonetheless wildly popular. The clash here is between the Saudi authorities, who style themselves as the guardians of what is Islamically correct, and secular Turkish culture, which is comprised largely of Muslims acting in ways that cannot be justified by Islamic law. This befuddles Westerners, who see self-identified Muslims living as modern Westerners in Turkey and jump to all sorts of conclusions about Islam and its compatibility with secularism, pluralism, and democracy — conclusions that have no warrant. For it is against manifestations of secularism like this very soap opera that the forces of political Islam in Turkey are fighting against, on the grounds that they transgress against Islam.

Sharia Alert: “A Subversive Soap Roils Saudi Arabia,” by Faiza Saleh Ambah for the Washington Post, August 3:

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia — A Turkish soap opera featuring an independent fashion designer and her amazingly supportive and attractive husband is emptying the streets whenever it’s on and has more than doubled the number of Saudis visiting Turkey this summer.Millions of people — especially women, apparently — are tuning in nightly to find out whether the couple will stay together or be torn apart by jealousies and old flames.

But “Noor,” the story of a multi-generational, upper-class Turkish family, has also sparked a backlash. The show has become the subject of angry Friday sermons in this strict Islamic kingdom, and the country’s chief cleric recently issued a fatwa calling it “decadent” and sinful to watch.

“Noor” has had such a deep influence because, unlike American or Mexican soap operas broadcast here, it is about a Muslim family living in a Muslim country. The show is also dubbed in an Arabic dialect, not classical Arabic, which makes it easier to understand and feels more intimate to viewers.

And then, there’s that husband.

The blue-eyed, blond Muhannad, played by Kivanc Tatlitu, a 24-year-old Turkish actor and model, is tall, handsome, romantic, respectful and treats his wife, Noor — the title character — as both a love object and an equal.

“Saudi women fantasize about what they’re lacking,” said Amira Kashgari, an assistant linguistics professor at King Abdul Aziz University who writes about social issues for al-Watan newspaper. “They are almost obsessed with this show because of the way he interacts with and treats his wife.”…

“Bali bomber’s date with death closer”- Really?

Stephen Fitzpatrick, Jakarta correspondent The Australian

bali0909.jpg

BALI bomber Amrozi bin Nurhasyim can finally be executed after Indonesia’s Supreme Court dismissed an appeal against his death sentence.

The only obstacle to Amrozi facing a firing squad is the political will of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who knows he will face a backlash from his Muslim electorate over the execution.

* Exactly. Because Muhammad said, ” No Muslim should be killed for killing a Kafir” (infidel). Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol. 9:50

2002-20-23-bali-indonesia-bashir-gets-bile-drip-520.JPG

* That’s exactly why Bucktooth Bashir never received his just punishment and got off after doing barely 25 months in the can. That’s why some of the Bali bombers have been taken out to Starbucks by their jailers; what more do you need to know?

Dr Yudhoyono — who is more than midway through his five-year term as President and the first Indonesian leader to be directly elected — still has the option of granting clemency to Amrozi, his older brother Ali Ghufron and fellow death-row bomber Imam Samudra.

* Sheik Yer’mami, the great prophet, predicts Yudhoyono will do exactly that…

However, that is a route he has expressly ruled out in the cases of the Bali Nine Australian heroin smugglers, and one he is extremely unlikely to take in this case.

* Certainly. The infidels will be executed, which will strike fear in the hearts of other infidels, especially the halfassed politicians in Australia who hide behind ‘having to respect the laws of Indonesia, a sovereign country’-

*
The Islamic fundamentalist trio were at the heart of the 2002 nightclub bombing that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

They were sentenced to death in 2003 but appealed against that decision after Indonesia’s Constitutional Court ruled the anti-terrorism legislation used to convict them should not have been retroactively applied.

That ruling has now been disregarded in a decision confirmed to The Weekend Australian last night by Supreme Court Chief Justice Iskandar Kamil.

US Judge Hits Iran With 2.65 Billion in Damages Over 1983 Marines Barracks Bombing

Iran fined $2.65 billion for terrorism

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press

Iran must pay $2.65 billion to the families of the 241 U.S. service members killed in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, a federal judge declared Friday in a ruling that left survivors and families shedding tears of joy.

U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth described his ruling as the largest-ever such judgment by an American court against another country. “These individuals, whose hearts and souls were forever broken, waited patiently for nearly a quarter century for justice to be done,” he said.

Iran has been blamed for supporting the militant group Hezbollah, which carried out the suicide bombing in Beirut. It was the worst terrorist act against U.S. targets until the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Hundreds of people crowded into a federal courtroom to hear Friday’s ruling. Parents have grown old since their children were killed. Siblings have grown into middle-age. Children have married and started families of their own.

Who do you believe? Me or your lying eyes?

The IAEA chief Mohammad ElBaradei has criticized US detractors for not giving Iran a chance to come clean on past nuclear activities.

ElBaradei further said despite suspicions over Iran’s future nuclear activities, the International Atomic Energy Agency had not encountered any undeclared facilities, enrichment activities or any ‘weaponization’ programs. The UN watchdog agency has not received any information from the intelligence sources making claims in this regard, he added. “We haven’t received any smoking gun,” ElBaradei said.

The UN nuclear agency had not seen any evidence that requires going beyond diplomacy, he said, addressing those saying that the solution is to bomb Iran.

ElBaradei said the talk of bombing made him “shudder” because the rhetoric was reminiscent of the period before the Iraq war, when he had pleaded for more time to let inspectors verify claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

* Me thinks Mohammed roots for Islam, what say you?

A poster on LGF nails it:

Baradei is a Muslim, whose only loyalty is to Allah and other Muslims, not humanity at large. This trumps even the Arab Persian schism. He is practicing taqiyyah at the highest level, denying, covering, denying, distracting, demonizing the United States, denying….surprise! The Iranians have nukes!

The United Numnuts are prostate before the Muslim voting bloc of 50 or so poorly run nations, allied with leftists in non-Muslim countries. This has resulted in the absolute insanity of the most bigoted and oppressive dictatorial regimes sitting on the old and new Human Rights Council and is Orwell’s 1984 writ large where bad is good and good is bad.
