A young American Jewish student, Louis “Chip” Cantor, 23, attempting to enter Britain, was detained in a cell and interrogated over several hours, subjected to anti-semitic abuse by customs officers and then deported back to the United States for the crime of being Jewish and having an Israeli stamp in his passport. He was “shaken down” and detained by a female officer wearing a burka. It is a story which leaves no room for misunderstanding.

Cantor, who travelled last year to the UK for a summer job, and to participate in a fundraiser for a child with cancer, was subjected to nine hours of interrogation — fingerprinting, hackneyed anti-semitic slurs referencing the amount of money on his person (of course he must have socked the gold bars away somewhere!), black-booking that will hinder his travel abilities throughout the European Union, and ultimate deportation to the U.S.
Cantor arrived at a London’s Heathrow Airport on May 29, 2013, at about 10:00 pm, on a fully coordinated visit with all the necessary documents, and was being processed through customs when the agent looking at his passport came to the pages with Israeli visa stamps. (Cantor had spent part of his “gap year” in Israel).
She left him without a word, and, after a wait of 45 minutes, he was taken off to be detained for nine hours with no explanation, spending some of that time in an actual detention cell. He was given half a sandwich and told he could only have water if he begged for it. He was allowed to telephone his father in Kansas City, but not U.S. authorities.
